He pushed him back because voldemort was going to come out of the water bubble. Voldemort then rocked dumbledore onto his backside. He looked more powerful, dictated the fight, and then later possessed Harry with dumbledore magically unable to aid him.

Yes, his mind was completely on the duel, their surroundings, whether it be Harry or the water he used to try to drown Voldemort. When dueling you don't just focus on the opposing wizard you're mindful of your surroundings.
