Vegeta didn't just match Gohan's performance-- he did much, much better.
Logically speaking, this makes no sense at all. A SSJ2(pissed off or not) certainly shouldn't be able to access more potential power than a SSJ3, let alone Mystic Gohan-- again: the former is 4x>SSJ2, while the latter is, in all likelihood, 6-8x>SSJ2(at the very least.)
That is why I maintain that Akira simply stepped outside the parameters of 'logic' during that scene, and opted to give Vegeta his much needed time to shine, regardless of the glaring continuity errors.

a.) The difference between ASSJ Vegeta and Super-Perfect Cell is SEVERAL times less than the difference between a SSJ2 and Mystic Gohan.
b.) Vegeta's onslaught, while visually impressive, didn't even momentarily stun Cell. Conversely, Vegeta actually managed to draw blood from Bills during his melee.

Watch it just be due his pure saiyan blood, only pure Saiyans can damage the Gods, and the Prince is as pure as they come ....well I mean there's that Goku guy...but he lacks dat pride .
IIRC, regular SS Goku was able to hold his ground against Mystic Gohan while they were all inside Buu's head. May have had something to do with it being Buu's illusion or a mind-controlled Gohan(I can't remember correctly), but I doubt their power-levels were portrayed as being any different.
DBZ is one of the consistently most inconsistent animes when it comes to powerlevels anyways, so I wouldn't put the pointy finger on the series maker for any reason whatsoever.
Debatable. SS3 Goku was only seen in action against fat buu and kid buu, both of whom he was stalemating until the SS3 form's inherent energy problems began to kick in. Against fat buu, it was a non-serious fight, while kid buu(who's far more formidable than fat buu and likely as powerful as the Buu which Gohan fought) fought him tooth and nail.
Gohan only appeared to be slightly above SS3 Gotenks, who I believe is somewhat below SS3 Goku in terms of overall power.
Mystic Gohan is vastly superior to SSJ3 Gotenks and even more so to SSJ3 Goku. Remember that SSJ3 Goku admitted he had no chance against Super Buu. Also Super Buu was holding back against SSJ3 Gotenks so he could absorb him when they kids refused.
Here's Goku admitting Buu is too much even tho his SSJ3 was well known:
As you can see the only one stronger than Super Buu was Gohan. Gotenks was strong enough to put up a good fight but he couldn't win. And Goku knew he stood no chance what so ever. It goes like this:
