-sigh-

This is exactly the type of person that corrupts the concept of Faith. The people stop feeling love, and become bitter with hatred towards people who've never offended them or anyone else. They start to hate people for the crime of being BORN differently. Do some choose to engage in homosexuality despite being heterosexual? I'm sure they do. People also decide to kidnap villagers and make them fight to the death in mini gladiator arenas. There are much darker things out there. Yet here you are, "preaching" your "gods" word, when in reality you're just spouting the ridiculous babble from men long dead.

And the worst of it? You feel a sickening sense of superiority for doing so. Because you "believe" in Jesus. So that makes you better smile

You disgust me. Completely.

heh. Guessed that coming a mile awaythumb up Your obvious ineptitude is more satisfying than it should be for me.

Even with that said, I wouldn't mind you letting go of that restricting irrational anger and opening your eyes sometime. It's not hurting me, but you'll benefit.

This isn't a good stance either. Bashing someone elses God isn't commendable, nor is it a way to get your message across. It's a weak, and pitiful way of voicing your opinion. If you don't believe, that is entirely your business, but to put morons like this in place can't be done by worthless posts like this one. No need to go down to their level.

Wow. I never actually saw JIA talking to me on the last page until just now. I'm pretty sure blasphemy isn't a warnable offense, though.

What was it Stephen Fry said. Ah, here it is...

I've never quite mastered attacking an idea and not the person. Not that always practice it, mind you; I've bashed before, online and otherwise. But that's my default goal in debating, leaving the personal aspect out of it.

The distinction makes sense to me, but to many, their beliefs are inextricable from their persona identity. A vehement attack on their religion is an attack on them. I think that's (partially) why we see such messed up ideas about freedom of religion in the US.

That said, I'm sure God can handle some internet bashing. Better to let it out on Him than his comparatively more fragile human creations.

But his message is: "I believe that your god would be a negative influence on the world if it existed and that by believing in it you also become a negative influence on the word" so there's no positive spin to be put on things. People allowed to say "Lex Luthor is evil" while discussing the character. People are allowed to say "Joseph Stalin was evil" while discussing the man. Nothing different applies to any god.

I think he means it's not productive, and is going to create a negative reaction instead of an open dialogue. At least, that's how I saw it.

Religious intolerance has been and continues to be the cause of conflict. And it can't benefit from the equivalent of an "eff your fake god" that's what people like JIS feed on. If they want to do damage, which I can get behind, it should be through picking at the contradictions and everything else wrong in their beliefs. Reducing oneself to their level is worthless.

That is vastly over thinking what was said. If that was indeed the intention, it's respectable but it should be firmly stated. Otherwise it becomes just as worthless as Jesus' posts over there. Also, Lex Luthor aren't figures of reverence. Therefore bad mouthing them won't set back anything like bad mouthing a god will.

So you agree that political correctness, in its entirety, has no place in the modern world? (Offensive material, below)
[SPOILER - highlight to read]: I can't get behind that (your mom), because it leads to very angry outbursts (all over her face), and people start killing and raping everyone (your children).

This is why we need a bit of PC: you end up with situations where highly offensive stuff can be stated. Pretend I were serious (and you actually had children n'stuff): wouldn't that be disturbingly offensive to you? If not, mad respect. I honestly couldn't say my jimmies would remain unrustled.

How does that relate to the thread? Is it okay to ex-gay bash? HA! Cheeeerist, that made me laugh.

It's just about applying common sense.

So, I had a debate with a friend of mine over the movie "The Aristocrats." Horribly offensive movie. I thought it was hilarious. She thought that such low humor contributed to the degradation of society and was wrong to even bring up. We're talking rape, murder, incest, racism, pedophilia, illicit sex, blood and fecal matter, and many other things.

But my point was, anything can be made fun of and talked about, as long as it's in the right context. A rape joke among friends that you know well, with the understanding that it's a joke...ok. A rape joke in front of a rape victim...not ok. A rape joke in a crowd that won't know you're joking...not ok. A rape joke on the internet...probably general enough to be ok, but there would be exceptions. Point is, we're adults. We can separate talking about something and meaning it, and we can also consider our audience.

Same goes for political correctness. It's all about context. And in this context, we're a bunch of anonymous d-bags debating religion on a largely anything-goes internet discussion board. Frankly, if it's wrong to bash a person's God here, it's wrong anywhere. If I were being much more specific, like in your example with family references, then that's more dangerous territory, because I don't know everyone's home context. But God's a belief. It should be open to criticism of all sorts. And being offended comes in many varieties. It's not all the same. Hurting someone in an unneeded manner causes justified offended-ness. But being offended that someone attacked an idea that you hold, well, again, we're all adults. It's not black and white. There are different levels. And I'd be much more inclined to use the Stephen Fry comment in response to someone whose jimmies got rustled because I made a joke about their religion or God.

Taken in a larger context, there's social context as well. Bash Christianity, see what happens. Not much, most times. Bash a gay, see what happens. WAY more sensitive context. And it's not without reason. Rights are denied, people are ostricized, there are suicides, etc. But if we can't differentiate between the two, and realize that one is hateful and harmful and the other is, at worst, toothless and inconsequential to the well-being of others, then we aren't being adults about the discussion.

Now, bashing God might not be the most productive path to a fruitful discussion. No argument there. But being PC is all about application of common sense in regarding the context.
