A creature the size of a Kaiju can't even exist on land in real life- it would be crushed under its own weight.
So, since we're already operating under the theoretical scenario of such a creature being able to exist, sure, it's theoretically possible for it to survive a nuclear weapon.

The screenwriter talked about that a bit- talking sometimes helps new partners get on the same mental page and becomes a habit. Note how they don't actually have to convey details or anything. 'Let's do this,' translates into 'let's do this particular series of hand to hand moves,' and such.
