Malaysian Airlines Passenger Jet Crashes In Ukraine

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europ...1147473508.html

A Malaysian passenger airliner with 295 people on board has crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, according to officials.

The Boeing 777, flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was brought down by a buk ground-to-air missle, Ukrainian interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko wrote on his Facebook page. Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko denied his armed forces were involved in the downing of the airliner. "Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets," Poroshenko said.

Malaysian Airlines confirmed it had lost contact with flight MH17 from Amsterdam, saying plane was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew onboard. "Malaysia Airlines confirms it received notification from Ukrainian ATC that it had lost contact with flight MH17 at 1415 (GMT) at 30km from Tamak waypoint, approximately 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border. "Flight MH17 operated on a Boeing 777 departed Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Amsterdam local time) and was estimated to arrive at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6.10 am (Malaysia local time) the next day.

A flight tracking website showed that one flight path interrupted in Ukraine. The Interfax news agency said the plane came down 50km short of entering Russian airspace. The plane appeared to have come down in a region of military action where Ukrainian government forces are battling pro-Russian separatists. A separate unnamed source in the Ukrainian security apparatus, quoted by Interfax, said the plane disappeared from radar at a height of 10,000 metres after which it came down near the town of Shakhtyorsk.

Al Jazeera's Rory Challands, reporting from Moscow, said the plane fell in an area controlled by pro-Russian separatists. "The investigation would be very difficult given that it's controlled by the rebels," he said. "Ukrainian officials are saying that many children were dead. Some are saying that all died. Reuters is reporting body parts were found at the scene. It seems that it was a very gruesome scene."

Airplane manufacturer Boeing released a statement of sympathy to those affected by the crash. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those on board the Malaysia Airlines airplane lost over Ukrainian airspace, as well as their families and loved ones. Boeing stands ready to provide whatever assistance is requested by authorities," the statement read.

What will be the consequences if pro-Russian separatists, or worse, the Russian government itself, are revealed to be responsible?

What were the consequences when the Russians shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983?

What were the consequences of the US shooting down that one plane back in the 70s or 80s that I don't remember the country or decade of?

Never forget that these people did not merely die; they were murdered.

Yeah, really. This is why I have always said (to some varying degrees of agreement or hatred, that Germany should have won WW2, because Stalin and his little puppet govt's would have been a memory.

Korea, Vietnam, The Cuban Missile Crisis, Pol Pot's Killing Fields, the arming of several Middle Eastern states (most notably Lybia and Syria, which still has Cold War era Soviet bases. Egypt in the 60's was almost the stage for the Suez Canal and in the 70's the second stab at WW3 (withthe Cuban Missile crisis being the first.)

ALL of these were Soviet-engineered.

I wouldn't say it's the exact same thing. 007 was in restricted Soviet airspace so they kinda sorta have that excuse. This is more or less a state-sponsored terrorist attack.

Right, but the effects will probably be similar. One helped to foster anti-Soviet sentiments, the other will foster anti-Russian(or, hopefully, anti-Putin) sentiments.

And if it were a Soviet aircraft in someone else's restricted airspace, we'd hear that it was "an act of aggression" and we'd never hear the end of it.

Very true. As I said earlier, any credibility the Russians may have had is finished, kaput. No doubt this will leave the door open for a case of one upmanship until there's an outright war. No doubt both sides are planning their next moves.

It's just sad that a group of innocent passengers had to be the pawns in someone's twisted game.

3 convicted in 2014 downing of Malaysian jet over Ukraine

A Dutch court on Thursday convicted three men of murder for their role in shooting down a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet with a Russian surface-to-air missile, killing all 298 people aboard the aircraft as it flew over a separatist-controlled region of eastern Ukraine in 2014.

The convictions, along with the life sentences handed to the two Russians and a pro-Moscow Ukrainian who were tried in absentia, were seen as directing the blame for the jet’s downing at the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, even though the Kremlin has always denied any connection to it.

The trial, held in a courtroom near Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport where Flight MH17 took off for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, put the Kremlin’s involvement in the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine at the heart of the case.

A small measure of justice for the families of the 298 victims.
