V. SILVER CENTURION ARMOR

The next general purpose armor that Tony Stark created was the Silver Centurion armor.

(please log in to view the image)

Created as a response to Obadiah Stane's takeover of Stark Enterprises, the model boasted far greater flight maneuverability and was outfitted with three enduring trademark features: pulse bolts, force-fields and cloaking. The armor would serve him faithfully through the Armor Wars storyline until its destruction.

STRENGTH

The Silver Centurion armor did not lack for any strength. While drained of power, he lifts a crashing 747 jumbo jet and brings it down safely to the ground. From Iron Man #202:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth01IM202.jpg

Here, he hooks himself up to a giant submarine base's reactor and lifts it right out of the ocean and flies it two kilometers to shore. Afterwards, he tears right through the hull in Iron Man #204:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth02IM204.jpg

Stark designs a new metal alloy for improved space construction but it's still no match for the armor as he presses and folds it over in Iron Man #213:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth02aIM213.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor tears right through a reinforced tank in Iron Man #216:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth02bIM216.jpg

Chaining him to a pair of SP-4 tanks, the Silver Centurion model flexes his arms and brings them careening into each other, reducing them to scrap. From Iron Man #225:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth03IM225.jpg

The armor was strong enough to match and strike Ultron blow for blow for a time in West Coast Avengers #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ength04WCA1.jpg

At full power, he's barreled into a mountain thrown at him by Terrax and destroys it with a single strike in Avengers Annual #16:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ersAnnual16.jpg

DURABILITY

The Silver Centurion armor was durable enough to blunt force to take a sustained beating at the hands of Ultron in West Coast Avengers #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Blunt01WCA1.jpg

Here it gets smashed through the ground with a piledriver blow and is none the worse for wear in Iron Man #206:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt02IM206.jpg

The armor was completely bullet-proof as well. From Iron Man #218, 226 and Marvel Super-Heroes Special #13:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing01IM218.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing02IM226.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial13.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor was just as durable to energy-based attacks as well. Here he tanks M.O.D.O.K.'s plasma beam attack while trying to erect a pillar in Iron Man #205:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rgy01aIM205.jpg

Here he tanks Captain Marvel's attack full-on in West Coast Avengers Annual #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...2WCAAnnual2.jpg

Here, he no-sells a direct missile hit in Marvel Super-Heroes Special #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial12.jpg

An ion howitzer's blast is also no-sold in Marvel Super-Heroes Special #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/.../SCEnergy05.jpg

Here, a woman possessed by Morgan le Fay notes that the "touch of iron weakens" her magicks in Iron Man #209:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy01IM209.jpg

He also improved the suit's refractory coating and easily shrugs off and reflects a heat blast back at the villainous Sunstroke in West Coast Avengers #17:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy03WCA17.jpg

Iceman tries to contain the Silver Centurion armor in a block of pure ice and fails in Iron Man Annual #8:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...re01Annual8.jpg

So does the villainous Blizzard in Iron Man #224:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture02IM224.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The Silver Centurion armor was improved over the Classic armor in that it was highly resistant to draining as he tells Ultron in West Coast Avengers #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Draining01a.jpg

A minion of the Spymaster finds this out to his dismay as well in Iron Man #226:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ning02IM226.jpg

SPEED

(please log in to view the image)

The upper limits of the Silver Centurion armor's flying speed are unknown but here he achieves Mach speed by breaking the sound barrier several times over. From Iron Man #201:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed01IM201.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor was far more maneuverable. Here, he takes a straight nosedive at over 500 mph and with only a few inches from the ground to spare, "makes a lightning-fast ninety-degree turn" to avoid crashing. From Iron Man #202:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed02IM202.jpg

The armor could also easily achieve escape velocity without special thrusters. From Iron Man #201:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...-SpaceIM201.jpg

BLASTING POWER

Naturally, the Silver Centurion armor was outfitted with "new, improved super-deluxe repulsors!" From Iron Man #206:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower02IM206.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor came outfitted with a weapon called pulse bolts and those could be channeled and focused to "disintegration intensity" in Iron Man #214:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower01IM214.jpg

REPULSOR RAYS

As noted above, the Silver Centurion's repulsor rays were upgraded from the Classic armor's. From Iron Man #206:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays01IM206.jpg

His targeting systems were also improved permitting him to let loose a volley of rapid fire bursts. From Iron Man #222:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays02IM222.jpg

UNI-BEAM

The Silver Centurion's uni-beam showed further versatility than previous armors. It could emit a laser beam in Iron Man #200:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam01IM200.jpg

A thermal beam could melt a pair of aircraft "like ice cream on a hotplate!" From Iron Man #201:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam02IM201.jpg

Here he shoots out a concussion beam to take down an enemy in Iron Man #214:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam03IM214.jpg

The uni-beam could also emit an energy disruption beam that does exactly as advertised in West Coast Avengers #26:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam05WCA26.jpg

Virtually every wavelength of the spectrum is open to the uni-beam. From Iron Man #215:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam04IM215.jpg

PULSE BOLTS

One of the new innovations of the Silver Centurion armor was pulse bolts. They were extremely powerful and could disintegrate a target completely. From Iron Man #200:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts01IM200.jpg

The pulse bolts were triggered via a cybernetic link that could be activated without even conscious thought. From Iron Man #200:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ulseBolts02.jpg

While fired from his palms, the pulse bolts could be released simultaneously along with his repulsor rays. From Iron Man #204:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts03IM204.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The shape and size of the pulse bolts could be adjusted and here he makes them "big and wide enough to catch the falling pieces and disintegrate them." From Iron Man #205:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts04IM205.jpg

They're nature has been described as "plasma missiles" and "phased electric charges." From Iron Man #207 and 227:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts05IM207.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts06IM227.jpg

OTHER WEAPONS SYSTEMS

(please log in to view the image)

Instead of freon pellets, the Silver Centurion could shoot weaponized freon streams. From Iron Man Annual #9, Marvel Super-Heroes Special #12 and Iron Man vol.4 #28:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...reamAnnual9.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial12.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...treamIMv428.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor was also outfitted with the usual ultra-sonics. They could disrupt electronic guidance systems and discombobulate the inner ears of people. From Iron Man #210, 215, 219, 227 and Marvel Super-Heroes Special #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIM210.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIM215.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIM219.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial15.jpg

Like previous models, the Silver Centurion armor could emit a strong electrical discharge. It could disrupt molecular cohesion or effect paralysis. From Iron Man #204, 228:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...chargeIM204.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...chargeIM228.jpg

Here he shoots pencil lasers which could be used with surgical precision. From Iron Man #230 and Iron Man vol.4 #28:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...LasersIM230.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...LaserIMv428.jpg

The armor also was equipped with a heat lance. From Iron Man #228:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...8-HeatLance.jpg

The Silver Centurion armor could emit a disrupter field to mess with electronic guidance systems in Iron Man #200-01:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rFieldIM200.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Forcefields.jpg

The Silver Centurion model also boasted the handy @#$% it, fire everything protocol. From Iron Man #207:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...otocolIM207.jpg

FORCE-FIELDS

The Silver Centurion armor was the first model to incorporate the regular use of force-fields. From Iron Man #200:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds01IM200.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The force-fields did surround his entire body and could easily no-sell multiple missiles. From Iron Man #201-02:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds02IM201.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds03IM202.jpg

He could also activate the force-fields at a distance in Iron Man #202:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rcefields04.jpg

The force-field could even counter Captain Marvel's electromagnetism in West Coast Avengers Annual #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...5WCAAnnual2.jpg

MAGNETISM

The Silver Centurion's powers of magnetism were no less powerful than before. He could magnetize his armor or reverse its polarity in Iron Man #208 and West Coast Avengers #11:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ism01aIM208.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism06WCA11.jpg

He could also polarize other objects in West Cost Avengers #30:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism09WCA30.jpg

Here he repels large metallic objects with reverse magnetism in Iron Man #217:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM217.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Magnetism02.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He could move around metallic objects with magnetic pulse beams, which were also called "variator rays." From Iron Man #221, 225, 228 and West Coast Avengers #28:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism03IM221.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism04IM225.jpg

V. SILVER CENTURION ARMOR (cont'd)

ENERGY ABSORPTION

The outer fabric of the Silver Centurion's armor could "absorb any form of energy, including heat," from Iron Man #200:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion01IM200.jpg

So someone like Captain Marvel could easily recharge him in a snap in Incredible Hulk #322:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion05aIH322.jpg

Here he takes a "million volts worth" of charged particles in a plasma beam attack and absorbs it completely. From Iron Man #204:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion03IM204.jpg

Obviously, it could absorb electricity and amplify itself. From Iron Man #203-04:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion02IM203.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...bsorption04.jpg

An "electrostatic impulse net" is a simple snack for his "wide-spectrum energy assimilation circuits" in Iron Man #215:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion07IM215.jpg

Here he forcibly siphons energy from Mandroid armors in Iron Man #227:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion08IM227.jpg

He can even siphon energy directly from force-fields or other traps in Marvel Super-Heroes Special #12-13:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial12.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...esSpecial13.jpg

Even Hawkeye's voltage arrow can recharge his circuits. From West Coast Avengers #30:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion11WCA30.jpg

Here he takes Captain Marvel's energy attack and throws it back at her in "one laserlike burst," from West Coast Avengers Annual #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...5WCAAnnual2.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Here he takes the full energy assault of Terrax and redirects it back at him in Avengers Annual #16:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ersAnnual16.jpg

ENERGY MANIPULATION

The Silver Centurion armor was no slouch in the energy manipulation business either. Here he completely disrupts Captain Marvel's energy form in West Coast Avengers #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...1WCAAnnual2.jpg

He uses an energy disruption beam to short-circuit Hank Pym's battle-armor in West Coast Avengers #26:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion02WCA26.jpg

OTHER ABILITIES

The Silver Centurion armor retained the collapsible folding nature of the Classic armor, allowing for easy transport and equipping. From Iron Man #215:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rtableIM215.jpg

A new trait incorporated into the Silver Centurion armor was its holistic design. This allowed the armor's circuits to reinforce each other when damaged and share workloads. From Iron Man #203:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...DesignIM203.jpg

As with any armor worth its salt, the Silver Centurion came equipped with a variety of scanning devices. They included heat sensors, radiation sensors, psionic energy tracers, ultraviolet scanners, infrared scanners, sonics scanners, radar and electromagnetic sensors. From Iron Man #204, 208, 214, 219, 221, 226 and West Coast Avengers #17:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners01IM204.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners02IM208.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners03IM214.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners04IM219.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners06IM221.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners07IM226.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners05WCA17.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The Silver Centurion model was the first general purpose armor to fully incorporate a chameleon mode type of camouflage. This was basically a stealth mode that hid it from scanners and projected a hologram blending it in with the background. He would use it liberally for a while. From Iron Man #200, 208, 213-14:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onModeIM200.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onModeIM208.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onModeIM213.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onModeIM214.jpg

He would continue using it until he realized there was a slight degenerative effect on his nerves from each use in Iron Man #217:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onModeIM217.jpg

ORIGIN

The Silver Centurion armor was a direct response to Obadiah Stane's takeover of Stark Enterprises. With his older Classic armor destroyed in battle, he had no choice but to move forward with the experimental model design. He would bequeath the Classic armor to his best friend, Jim Rhodes. From Iron Man #200 and 202:

VI. NEO-CLASSIC ARMOR

The Silver Centurion armor only saw use for a few years. During the climax of the Armor Wars, the Silver Centurion armor was destroyed and Stark had to rely on a new model. This new armor model was the Neo-Classic armor.

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic armor was an improvement over the Silver Centurion model in every single way. Stronger, sturdier, with greater energy absorption and manipulation capabilities, and more versatile than ever.

STRENGTH

At normal running power, the Neo-Classic armor was capable of giving him "a lift of about eighty-five tons." Strong enough to lift a giant monster and fly him straight up into the sky. From West Coast Avengers #54:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth02WCA54.jpg

Here he lifts a gigantic nuclear reactor embedded underground and flies it through the ground and over the sea to prevent it from blowing up in California in Iron Man #259:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth01aIM259.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Here he lifts up two tanks in each hand and smashes them together in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom1.jpg

Impressively, he approaches a mountain cliffside and "tears loose a piece of the native rock as easily as another man would tear paper." From Iron Man #273:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth03IM273.jpg

A steel bunker door is torn right off its hinges in Iron Man #276:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth04IM276.jpg

When the Neo-Classic's repulsor rays prove too weak to take out a mobile tankcraft, he uses raw strength to tear it to pieces in Iron Man #258.2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth08IM2582.jpg

Here, he is nearly encased in tech foam which can "harden[] to the strength of titanium steel." He flexes and completely shatters it in Iron Man #235:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth01IM235.jpg

The Neo-Classic's striking power is high enough to stagger the stolen Hulkbuster armor in Iron Man and the Armor Wars #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...7ArmorWars4.jpg

He slams his foot down and creates a shockwave that puts a group of minions on their butt in West Coast Avengers Annual #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...5WCAAnnual7.jpg

DURABILITY

The Neo-Classic armor could withstand greater amounts of blunt force. The Mandarin slams it through a mountain and "[t]he force of his impact registers on seismographs as far away as California... seven thousand miles to the east." From Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy02IM275.jpg

Here he takes Wonder Man's punches in Wonder Man #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...3WonderMan2.jpg

He takes a cheapshot from the Wrecker's crowbar flush in Iron Man #251 and would end up withstanding multiple shots throughout the fight:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt01IM251.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...s/NCBlunt02.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor withstands a mountain crumbling down on top of him in Iron Man #273:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt04IM273.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Naturally, the Neo-Classic armor was perfectly bullet-proof to small-arms and aircraft fire. From Iron Man #258.1, 277, Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1 and West Coast Avengers #72:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ing05IM2582.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing03IM277.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom1.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing01WCA72.jpg

Noting it to be the "strongest armor I've ever constructed," Stark confronts a space-spawned creature capable of shredding titanium bulkheads and gets scratched up in Iron Man #237:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing02IM237.jpg

Stark observes that "[s]ince his transformation into a literal Living Laser his power seems to have been increasing exponentially." Even then, "the "armor is up to the task of deflecting a broad beam" energy assault. From Iron Man #260:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy01IM260.jpg

Mandarin's energy blast "shakes the mountains" and sends the Neo-Classic armor flying, yet still alive in Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy02IM275.jpg

When Thanos lets loose a destructive wave of energy from his Infinity Gauntlet, it slams into the Neo-Classic armor and devastates the Earth. He survives in Infinity Gauntlet #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tyGauntlet2.jpg

The Neo-Classic's resistance to temperature extremes was superior to the Silver Centurion's. Here, he dives into molten lava without any issue and saves a capsule probe in Captain America Annual #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...02CAAnnual9.jpg

A horde of dragons like Fin Fang Foom breathes fire, slagging the mountainside they're on while the Neo-Classic armor tanks it in Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture04IM275.jpg

Trapped in Hell, the Neo-Classic armor carries his assailants through molten metal to get rid of them in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom1.jpg

An experimental coolant detonates and freezes everything solid. Despite his reservations, the Neo-Classic armor protects him in Marvel Super-Heroes Special #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...oesSpecial2.jpg

A witch entraps him in ice and fails to slow him down in Iron Man Annual #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...e05Annual12.jpg

Here, he tanks Mandarin's ice beam that drops his temperature to "absolute zero -- in half-a-second" and resists it long enough to counter it in Iron Man #241:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture01IM241.jpg

SPEED

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic's avoidance programs make him incredibly agile and allow him to duck and weave between multiple volleys of laser fire in Iron Man #246:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed03IM246.jpg

His attack speed was also increased. "His speed... is like the wind. His power... immeasurable!" From Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed04IM275.jpg

Here, he spins like a tornado to wrest free from the grasp of several of Mephisto's minions in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom2.jpg

Although Firepower had destroyed the Silver Centurion armor quite easily, he finds the Neo-Classic's "maneuverability [to be] incredible!" From Iron Man #231:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed01IM231.jpg

Ditto for the Ghost in enclosed spaces in Iron Man #239:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed02IM239.jpg

VI. NEO-CLASSIC ARMOR (cont'd)

BLASTING POWER

The Neo-Classic armor trades fire with the Mandarin and triumphs in Iron Man #242:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower01IM242.jpg

He one-shots Orka with a double repulsor blast to the face in Avengers Spotlight #26:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Spotlight26.jpg

He damages Ultron-13's form with a barrage of pulse bolts in Web of Spider-Man Annual #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...-ManAnnual7.jpg

By channeling the "armor's full power into the machinery, and through that -- into Doom," he succeeds in staggering him despite Doom's armor bonding with Excalibur. From Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom3.jpg

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Supported by an external energy source, the Neo-Classic armor could use his emergency redoubler back-up systems and "pump about forty times more energy through the weapons array than the suit was built to take." Sufficient enough to knock out Fin Fang Foom in Iron Man #273:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower04IM273.jpg

Indeed, when he forcibly pours his entire personal power output into the Mandarin's rings, he unleashes a cataclysmic blast in China that tears apart space and time, kicks up a hurricane that lasts for sixteen straight hours, and registers reactions from around the planet. From Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower05IM275.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tingPower06.jpg

REPULSOR RAYS

(please log in to view the image)

While his repulsor rays weren't necessarily more powerful than before, they were far more precise with greater rapid-fire capabilities, as the Neo-Classic armor came installed with an improved "rapid-fire sequencing computer." From Iron Man # 231:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays01IM231.jpg

Per Stark himself, "I'm still amazed at the efficiency of my new trackng circuits! My repulsors are blasting that debris into fragments the size of baseballs -- as fast as I can think about it!" From Iron Man #233:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays02IM233.jpg

Here he precisely targets a rockslide's worth of rubble, boulder by boulder in Iron Man #245:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays03IM245.jpg

The Neo-Classic's repulsor rays were also more versatile. Here, he sets his repulsors to "an antagonistic frequency" capable of disrupting the Living Laser's energy form in Iron Man #260 and 263:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays05IM260.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays06IM263.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ulsorRays07.jpg

He could use his repulsor rays as a purely "concussive effect" and push back an oil slick without igniting it in Namor the Sub-Mariner #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ub-Mariner5.jpg

His repulsor rays could even "set up a counter-balancing shockwave that will cancel out the ripples from Landslide's. . . . [by] measur[ing] the precise seismic activity below -- [and] duplicat[ing] it exactly -- all in a split second." From Iron Man Annual #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...s08Annual12.jpg

UNI-BEAM

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic's uni-beam was just as versatile as ever. Here he emits visible light rays, ultra-violet rays and infrared rays in rapid sequence in West Coast Avengers #67:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam02WCA67.jpg

He could also emit a heat ray that could slag enough metal to cover the Radioactive Man, vaporize Mandarin's water-spout and vaporize acid ice in Iron Man #234, 242 and 246:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam03IM234.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam06IM242.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam07IM246.jpg

He uses this again to vaporize magical water creatures with an area-of-effect "burst of maximum heat" in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom3.jpg

A strobe effect blinds a space creature used to darkness in Iron Man #237:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...beam04IM237.jpg

The uni-beam also had a laser setting, from Iron Man Annual #13:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...aIMAnnual13.jpg

Here the uni-beam emits a tractor beam that can lock onto and crush Chemistro's wrist blasters and hands in Iron Man #252:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rBeamsIM252.jpg

Here, he projects an interference pattern to discorporate Klaw's sonic forms in Avengers Spotlight #29:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Spotlight29.jpg

PULSE BOLTS

(please log in to view the image)

The use of pulse bolts did not originate with the Neo-Classic armor, but they were definitely refined. He reveals, "Up close, they're not as powerful as my repulsor rays! But they keep pulsing, gaining strength, the farther they go!" From Iron Man #231, 237, 242 and 247:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts01IM231.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts02IM237.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts03IM242.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts04IM247.jpg

Therefore, they were among his most powerful attacks from long-range. From Iron Man #258.3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lts05IM2583.jpg

VI. NEO-CLASSIC ARMOR (cont'd)

OTHER WEAPONS SYSTEMS

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic armor had a variety of offensive systems. These included flamethrowers, tasers and lasers. From Iron Man and the Armor Wars #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lArmorWars4.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor also shot weaponized freon streams. From Iron Man #246:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...StreamIM246.jpg

Here, he uses an acid ice stream which may or may not be different from the typical freon streams in Iron Man #237:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...StreamIM237.jpg

He actually still retained freon pellets in his left gauntlet. From Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #2 and Iron Man #258.4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom2.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elletIM2584.jpg

Naturally, the Neo-Classic armor made liberal use of ultra-sonics. A wave of ultra-sonics disintegrates a satellite's debris into dust or could throw a squadron of Mandroids for a loop. From Iron Man #233 and 258.3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIM233.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onicsIM2583.jpg

Here, his computer systems could actually analyze the wavelength of other sonic weapons and then emit counter-sonics to negate their blasts completely in Iron Man #235:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIM235.jpg

His electrical discharges could emit "a few hundred thousand volts" in West Coast Avengers Annual #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...eWCAAnnual4.jpg

Here he uses a taser pellet to electrocute a foe standing in water in Iron Man Annual #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...letAnnual12.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic armor was equipped with focused pencil lasers. From Iron Man #233 and Iron Man Annual #10:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lLaserIM233.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...serAnnual10.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...PencilLaser.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor could shoot out sleeping gas and knock them out. From Iron Man #270:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ingGasIM270.jpg

Or he could drop sleeping gas pellets capable of rendering a squad of soldiers unconscious in seconds in Iron Man #277:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...PelletIM277.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor could fire a barrage of microwave rays to boil the water inside several Atlantean warrior helmets in Iron Man Annual #10:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...vesAnnual10.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He could also channel a wide dispersal microwave pulse that instantaneously evaporated magical mist in Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom3.jpg

He doesn't "often use weapons at this intensity," but when he needs to, he can completely vaporize wreckage with a high-intensity plasma bolt. From Iron Man #251:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...aBoltsIM251.jpg

He also could let loose a pair of flying hyperwave generators "that can bombard a target with conflicting frequencies of magno-pulse energy." From Iron Man #271:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ratorsIM271.jpg

As seen above, the Neo-Classic model had its own @#$% it, fire everything protocol as well. From Iron Man and the Armor Wars #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lArmorWars4.jpg

The typical trump card weapon against any mechanical systems, the Neo-Classic armor had the ability to fire a focused electromagnetic pulse, which would disable mechanical systems for six minutes. The bonus: it did not disable his own armor. From Iron Man #231:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...01-EMPIM231.jpg

Although he could turn this electromagnetic pulse on himself and short-circuit enemy machinery attached to his armor when needed to in Iron Man #240:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...06-EMPIM240.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...apons07-EMP.jpg

VI. NEO-CLASSIC ARMOR (cont'd)

FORCE-FIELDS

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic armor's force-fields were much more improved over the Silver Centurion's as they were just as strong but used far less power. Here, he throws up a force-field to counter a million laser rays split from Living Laser's blast in Iron Man #260:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds07IM260.jpg

He uses them to contain an explosion in Iron Man Annual #13:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...aIMAnnual13.jpg

He could even generate circular shields from his gauntlet for more efficient defense. From Iron Man #234 and 247:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds02IM234.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds04IM247.jpg

As a bonus, this type of force-field triggered energy absorption circuits. From Iron Man #231:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds01IM231.jpg

And because his powers of magnetism were further refined, he could absorb an attack and return an energy attack right back at its source. From Iron Man #244:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds03IM244.jpg

As a temporary measure, he equipped himself with experimental force-fields that rendered him immune to Chemistro's transmutation power. From Iron Man #252:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds05IM252.jpg

While primarily for defense, he could also project his force-field forcibly at an opponent and batter them, as he does here to the Iron Monger armor in Iron Man #253:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds06IM253.jpg

Or just bat targets away with a swing of his arm and shield, Captain America-style. From Iron Man #258.1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lds08IM2581.jpg

MAGNETISM

As stated numerous times, Iron Man's abilities were originally magnetism-based. He notes here that he hasn't used his magnetism circuits in a while but he's nonetheless able to give two Dreadnought robots a positive and negative charge respectively, sending them careening towards each other in Iron Man #245:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Magnetism02.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He could also charge his own armor and Wrecker's mystical crowbar with like magnetic charges to send himself careening away to safety in Iron Man #251:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism06IM251.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor's magnetism was strong enough to slow down and halt a crane dropping off a skyscraper, keep a damaged helicopter aloft safely, divert anti-air missiles heading straight towards him, and keep a wall section floating softly to the floor. From Iron Man #245, 276, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #11 and West Coast Avengers Annual #7 respectively:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM245.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism09IM276.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SSMAnnual11.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...1WCAAnnual7.jpg

On a smaller scale, he could just as easily pull guns away from bare hands in Iron Man #248 and 277:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism03IM248.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism10IM277.jpg

Or sneakily bend a trainrail into someone to electrocute them in Iron Man and the Armor Wars #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...3ArmorWars4.jpg

Here he draws an entire squadron of armor suits directly to him and forms a large mass of metal floating in the air before short-circuiting them completely in Tales of Suspense vol.2 #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Suspensev21.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Rather than using himself as a large electromagnet, he could also emit a "variator ray" to magnetize a swarm of flying drones or a squad of Mandroids, causing them to crash into each other in Iron Man #258.1 and 258.3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ism14IM2581.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ism15IM2583.jpg

Despite them being made mostly of synthetics, there's enough metal in these space robots to send them careening away with a burst of reverse magnetism, in Iron Man #250:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism04IM250.jpg

His magnetic powers could even lock onto a speeding Quicksilver and levitate him when Pietro was partially transformed into a cyborg in West Coast Avengers #67:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rBeamsWCA67.jpg

He charges his own armor to slam his villainous future counterpart into a space station to escape his bearhug in Iron Man #250:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Magnetism05.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor could also release a pair of magno-couplers which lifted Vibro off the ground and spun him like a pinwheel, harkening back to his early Mark I days. From Iron Man #267:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism07IM267.jpg

VI. NEO-CLASSIC ARMOR (cont'd)

ENERGY ABSORPTION

The Neo-Classic armor reincorporated standard thermocouples which could absorb heat easily. From West Coast Avengers Annual #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...2WCAAnnual5.jpg

Here he actually uses them to heat up his armor to weaken a magnetic field in Iron Man #251:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...uple01IM251.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

As noted earlier, the Neo-Classic armor incorporated force-fields that could absorb energy attacks. From Iron Man #231 and 244:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion01IM231.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion04IM244.jpg

Otherwise, it could naturally absorb energy attacks directly, such as the electrical charges from coils and taser darts. From Iron Man #235 and 246:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion02IM235.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion05IM246.jpg

Here he manages to completely absorb Zzzax into his armor and contains him briefly in Marvel Comics Presents #8:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ption03MCP8.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor could also hook himself up to external power sources such as the Classic armor's old power pods in Iron Man #266:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion06IM266.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...bsorption07.jpg

Or some conveniently placed power grid lines to "pump about forty times more energy through the weapons array than the suit was built to take." From Iron Man #273:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion07aIM273.jpg

Convenient cables and generic electricity aside, he could absorb an overloading nuclear reactor's radiation alongside the Radioactive Man to save the Vault in Avengers Deathtrap: The Vault #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...hTrapVault1.jpg

The upper limits of his energy absorption capabilities are unknown. Here, he connects directly to Mjolnir which channels tremendous energy into his armor powerful enough to propel them clear of an event horizon created by the Black Celestial's tampering of an alternate Galactus. From Fantastic Four #339:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion08FF339.jpg

ENERGY MANIPULATION

As noted earlier, the Neo-Classic armor sets his repulsors to "an antagonistic frequency" capable of disrupting the Living Laser's energy form in Iron Man #260 and 263:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion01IM260.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion02IM263.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ipulation03.jpg

Here, he projects an interference pattern to discorporate Klaw's sonic forms. And later on, he confronts Klaw directly by bearing down on his specific frequency and takes him out. From Avengers Spotlight #29:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Spotlight29.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ipulation05.jpg

OTHER ABILITIES

The Neo-Classic armor retained its collapsible folding nature. "Metal mesh that's soft as silk till you polarize it -- then gets tough enough to stop artillery, while staying supple enough to move in!" From Iron Man #19:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...bilityIM238.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The Neo-Classic armor had the usual wide array of scanning devices. They included ultraviolet scanners, infrared, psionics detectors and seismic measures. They could also perform complicated analysis such as running metal ratio scans, running sensor scans to find override codes, analyzing energy frequencies with spectroanalysis, running sweeps for listening devices and tracking chemical traces molecularly. From Iron Man #231, 235, 237, 241, 255, 270, Iron Man Annual #12 and Namor the Sub-Mariner #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners01IM231.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners02IM235.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners03IM237.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners04IM241.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners05IM255.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners09IM270.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...s07Annual12.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...CScanners08.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ub-Mariner4.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor's computer systems were much more advanced than before and were capable of advanced hacking. Here he overrides security codes on a satellite, cracks the Vault's codes and takes a minute to break into and download all files from Armor City's computer systems. From Iron Man #237, Avengers Deathtrap: The Vault #1 and West Coast Avengers Annual #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...king01IM237.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...hTrapVault1.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...5WCAAnnual7.jpg

A conventional computer would take six years to find the right code permutation. The Neo-Classic armor's computers do it less than six minutes. From Iron Man #276:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...king02IM276.jpg

Naturally, all Starktech included override codes he could use to hack them should they ever be misappropriated in Iron Man Annual #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...g03Annual12.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor was also equipped with image inducers. From Iron Man Annual #10 and Marvel Comics Presents #8:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...r02Annual10.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ducer01MCP8.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor was also outfitted with auto-save circuits that "act like the lack box on an airplane." From Iron Man #246 and Iron Man: Legacy of Doom #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ordersIM246.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gacyofDoom1.jpg

Despite his proven prowess with magnetism, there's always someone else who does it better. So the Neo-Classic armor was treated with a demagnetizing agent that made him immune to Magneto's powers directly. From West Coast Avengers #57 and 60:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gAgentWCA57.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gAgentWCA60.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor also contained heat induction coils that could melt the Blizzard's ice blasts before they even connect. From Iron Man #240:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...uctionIM240.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor retained the automatic extinguishers that sprayed flame retardant foam. From Iron Man #256, 264 and 276:

Which may or may not be the same thing as this unbreakable polyfiber strand in Iron Man #275:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngHookIM275.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor contained devices for missile-lock jammers. Even highly-shielded guidance systems designed by Stark himself could be scrambled by his override beacon which was "capable of scanning more than seventeen million permutations per minute." From in Iron Man #231 and 277:

A cyber probe allows him to manipulate a warhead's circuitry remotely in Iron Man #231:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rProbeIM231.jpg

Here he emits tractor beams that can lock onto and smash robots, crush Chemistro's wrist blasters or forcibly send the Iron Monger armor careening in Iron Man #249 and 252-53:

http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rBeamsIM252.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rBeamsIM253.jpg

The Neo-Classic Armor could make like Spider-Man with these magnetic soles. From Iron Man #234, 239 and 277:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cSolesIM234.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cSolesIM239.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gneticSoles.jpg

To regulate a pilot's anxiety and nerves, he added a bio-rhythm generator to the Neo-Classic armor in Iron Man #270:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...eratorIM270.jpg

At one point, Tony Stark's nervous system suffered systemic damage. He would develop encephalo circuits in the Neo-Classic armor's helmet to control the Iron Man armors remotely with his mind in Iron Man #261 and 272:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rcuitsIM261.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...loLinkIM272.jpg

The Neo-Classic armor completely dispels Doom's encephalographic loop that subdued Phoenix Rachel Grey, because Doom apparently stole the idea for the device from Stark in the first place in Excalibur #38:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Excalibur38.jpg

ORIGIN

The Neo-Classic armor came into play once the Silver Centurion armor was destroyed by the superior exo-suit, Firepower. He augmented it with a new beta particle power supply, experimental attack and defense modes, and special security chips to prevent theft and replication. "This is the most sophisticated, most astonishing invention I've ever constructed!" From Iron Man #231:

(please log in to view the image) (please log in to view the image) (please log in to view the image) (please log in to view the image)

UPGRADES

The Neo-Classic armor would last for several years and Stark made intermittent improvements to it. In Iron Man #244, "The microcircuited armor he created is a work of art. Over the next few days, he turns it into a masterpiece. Adding alterations and modifications he hopes will produce a miracle."
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ade01aIM244.jpg

When his armor's computer systems are compromised, he vows afterwards to "redesign my armor so that all systems will operate without computers, as well as speed up the bootstrap module!" From Marvel Comics Presents #43:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rade01MCP43.jpg

VII. MODULAR MARK I ARMOR

Like all other models, the Neo-Classic armor would eventually become outdated. The next armor was a complete redesign of the Iron Man concept, the Modular Mark I armor.

(please log in to view the image)

According to Stark himself, the Modular Mark I armor represented "A quantum leap ahead in concept and design. . . . It was time to rethink the basic design paradigm. So, instead of a single integrated suit... a modular component system -- which can be reconfigured by swapping out sub-systems like the boots, gloves or helmets... and with plug-in points for auxiliary systems chosen according to specific mission needs." From Iron Man #300.

STRENGTH

Tony's first Modular armor lasted a mere year but it did not appear to lack for any strength. Lifting steel girders is no issue for the Modular armor in Iron Man #306:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth02aIM306.jpg

Here, the Modular armor tears apart Black Brigade in Force Works #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...orceWorks12.jpg

He's also able to tear apart Venom's webbing in Iron Man #302:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth02IM302.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Reinforced blast doors are easily torn apart in Iron Man #315:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth03IM315.jpg

He strikes War Machine and gives him a beating in Iron Man #310:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth02bIM310.jpg

DURABILITY

The Modular Mark I armor was certainly more durable to blunt force damage than the Neo-Classic armor. Here, he withstands a simultaneous attack from both Rage and Nova in Iron Man #303:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt01IM303.jpg

After the dam collapses on them from the impact of that blow, Thunderstrike takes a cheapshot at him also, which is casually shrugged off in Iron Man #304:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt02IM304.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ularBlunt03.jpg

Conventional edged weapons don't pierce his armor even when depowered in War Machine #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...WarMachine9.jpg

Night Thrasher witnesses the Modular Mark I armor's agility firsthand and marvels, "I wonder, how does he design an armor that is as impregnable -- and still so maneuverable -- as his is?" From Night Thrasher #10:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tThrasher10.jpg

When he donned the first Modular armor, Stark had a cybernetic nervous system. This apparently allowed him processing speed at the nanosecond level, "Got maybe three seconds, real-time, more than enough, in nanoseconds. Run a level-one diagnostic..." From Iron Man Annual #15:

VII. MODULAR MARK I ARMOR (cont'd)

BLASTING POWER

Despite the War Machine being built entirely around the idea of firepower, the Modular armor was more than capable of standing toe-to-toe with it in terms of blasting. From Iron Man #310:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower01IM310.jpg

WEAPONS SYSTEMS

The Modular armor "lets loose a repulsor blast which would level a building!" From Night Thrasher #10:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tThrasher10.jpg

The Modular armor exceeded the other armors in the sheer versatility of its weapons systems. As mentioned previously, the Modular armor was meant to be modified for specific threats and, therefore, he had his pick of specialized armaments. Here, he packs a cartridge of explosive shells to pummel Ultimo with in Iron Man #300:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ShellsIM300.jpg

Rather than freon pellets, he uses a cryogenic compact module which uses liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze a liquid metal creature in Iron Man #318:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...odulesIM318.jpg

He still retains the classic electrical discharge attack. From Iron Man #302:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...chargeIM302.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He uses phased plasma streams against the mystical Ember in Force Works #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ForceWorks4.jpg

Although Black Brigade is shielded against it, the Modular armor could emit focused electromagnetic pulses in Force Works #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ForceWorks5.jpg

Another add-on emits a semi-fluid polymer compound which restricts Ultimo's vision and movement and "drinks up energy like a sponge." From Iron Man #300:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...mpoundIM300.jpg

He retrieves a polybound adhesive from his left leg module and entraps Speedball in Iron Man #303:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...undAdhesive.jpg

OTHER ABILITIES

The first Modular armor could still control magnetism. Here he draws a volley of steel-jacketed rounds directly to his hand before they an reach their innocent targets in Iron Man #304:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM304.jpg

He attaches two magnetic compact modules to generate "mutually opposing magnetic fields [to] polarize his synthetic structure -- making the atoms of his body repel one another" in Iron Man #318:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism02IM318.jpg

While it had very limited appearances, the original Modular armor did retain the classic thermocouples which could absorb heat and convert it to energy. From Iron Man #318:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...uple01IM318.jpg

The Modular armor's scanners permit him to use ultrasonic imaging and measure mass differentials across subspace rifts in Iron Man #302 and Force Works #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...sonicsIM302.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ForceWorks3.jpg

The classic image inducers allow him to get the drop on an opponent in Iron Man #318:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ucer01IM318.jpg

Modified image inducers could "create both tactile feedback through tensor fields -- and [] give off the transceiver signature of one of the Controller's slave chips." From Iron Man Annual #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...r02Annual15.jpg

OTHER ARMOR DEVICES

(please log in to view the image)

Just as the Modular armor could be modified with add-on armaments, Stark had his pick of other armor devices for specific mission protocols. Here, he uses an adamantium-tipped scanalyzer probe to pierce Ultimo's hide and get everything needed to take him down in Iron Man #300:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...mScanalyzer.jpg

He retained his magnetic soles to do his best Spider-Man impressions. Also from Iron Man #300:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gneticSoles.jpg

He also packed a compact electromagnetic field generator to short-circuit Ultimo in Iron Man #300:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gneticSoles.jpg

He attaches a magnogravetic field generator to Rage and cancels his gravity in Iron Man #303:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ratorsIM303.jpg

He could administer shots of pure adrenaline with his suit's hypospray injector in Force Works #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ForceWorks9.jpg

ORIGIN

Due to his enemies sabotaging and ruining a cybernetic nervous system designed to replace his damaged spinal cord, Tony began using encephalo circuitry to control the armor with his mind. Because of deleterious feedback, the Neo-Classic armor became too dangerous to control directly. But when he was forced to engage Ultimo in a temporary stop-gap remote armor, that armor was destroyed and the feedback threw him into a coma. While unconscious, his subconscious connected directly to his cybernetic nervous system and he rewrote the programming code. He would re-engage Ultimo with his latest model, the Modular armor. From Iron Man #300:

VIII. CROSSING ARMOR

Tony Stark eventually suffered a nervous breakdown caused by the stress of attacks on Stark Enterprises and Immortus' machinations.

(please log in to view the image)

Abandoning the Modular armor concept, he created a new suit of armor. One which he would use to betray and murder fellow Avengers during the Crossing.

STRENGTH

War Machine came into possession of alien technology and although his Eidolon Warwear system was far advanced, it was no match for the strength of the Crossing armor. Here he presses down on War Machine's throat in War Machine #22:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...arMachine22.jpg

A Sentinel tries to grab the Crossing armor who simply flexes and obliterates its hand in Iron Man #332:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth04IM332.jpg

Here he tears apart a stolen Iron Man armor piece by piece in Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth02IM325.jpg

When cousin Morgan Stark sics a squad of Iron Man armors on him, including the Stealth armor, the Crossing armor's striking power makes short work of it in Iron Man #331:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth03IM331.jpg

DURABILITY

The Crossing armor's blunt force durability was more than capable of no-selling punches from an older stolen Iron Man model with the aid of gravimetric stabilizers. From Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lunt01IM325.jpg

The Crossing armor was also resistant to energy attacks. Hawkeye finds out that his specialized laser, sonic and taser arrows are completely useless against the Crossing armor in Iron Man #323:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy01IM323.jpg

Extreme temperatures similarly fail. Here, Frostbite tries to freeze the Crossing armor to no avail in Iron Man #328:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture01IM328.jpg

The Crossing armor appeared impervious to chemical attacks also. Hawkeye's acid and gas arrows don't even make the Crossing armor flinch in Iron Man #323:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy01IM323.jpg

BLASTING POWER

(please log in to view the image)

The Crossing armor pierces straight through War Machine's Eidolon Warwear with a focused beam attack in War Machine #22:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...arMachine22.jpg

The Crossing armor literally disintegrates this Iron Man model's helmet in Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ower02IM325.jpg

The Crossing armor could blow right through a Sentinel in one shot in Iron Man #332:

VIII. CROSSING ARMOR (cont'd)

WEAPONS SYSTEMS

The Crossing armor's repulsor rays could be set to a wide dispersal pattern. From Avengers #392:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Avengers392.jpg

Apparently the chest's repulsor node where the uni-beam typically fires contains a prismatic mirror and could deflect energy beams like Sunstroke's solar lance in Iron Man #331:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Rays02IM331.jpg

The Crossing armor was apparently intended to be more ruthless than previous armors, and its new armaments spoke for themselves. Here he uses a combination of electro-pulses and heat blasts, then cryonics and acid streams in Iron Man #321:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...pons00IM321.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

War Machine is sent scattering by his pulsed lasers blitz in War Machine #22:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...arMachine22.jpg

He could also use fine focus lasers as well in Iron Man #328:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...BlastsIM328.jpg

Here he shoots light speed tasers in Iron Man #322:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...TasersIM322.jpg

His heat blasts are strong enough to fuse together the legs of another Iron Man armor in Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...BlastsIM325.jpg

Instead of electrical discharges, he could emit heat discharges from his armor and melt guns and knives on contact with his armor. From Iron Man #320:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM320.jpg

He uses a sustained microwave pulse to boil water in underground pipes in Iron Man #328:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...BlastsIM328.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He could create an absolute zero field of cold. From Iron Man #328 and 331:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...oFieldIM328.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...oFieldIM331.jpg

FORCE-FIELDS

The Crossing armor made use of inertial dampeners to "slow the rebounding bullets" in Iron Man #320:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM320.jpg

The Crossing armor could create solid-light force-fields. From Iron Man #329:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds01IM329.jpg

VIII. CROSSING ARMOR (cont'd)

MAGNETISM

Iron Man's prowess with magnetism did not diminish with this new model. Here he pulls guns and knives to his armor in Iron Man #320:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism01IM320.jpg

He draws his own helmet to him with magnetism in Avengers #393 and Force Works #19:

http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...orceWorks19.jpg

Here he forcibly levitates a temporally displaced Tony Stark in a stolen armor with magnetism in Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism04IM325.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He "catalyze[s] a fully-realized electro-magnetic field... that instantly ionizes all the oxygen in the immediate vicinity" to effectively snuff out a fire in Iron Man #329:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism05IM329.jpg

Later, he uses "another E-M insta-vacuum" to capture and contain an explosion and then cross-polarizes his gauntlets to "repel and redirect the brunt of the blast" skyward in Iron Man #330:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism06IM330.jpg

ENERGY ABSORPTION

At the climax of the Crossing storyline, Stark had to use his Crossing armor to absorb and redirect the energy of Kang's Temporal Transposer. This cost him his life in Avengers #395:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Avengers395.jpg

OTHER ABILITIES

His computer scanners conduct threat analysis and tracks and plots attacks near-instantly in Iron Man #323:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners01IM323.jpg

Hacking Sentinel armors is not a issue for Iron Man #332:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...king01IM332.jpg

OTHER ARMOR DEVICES

He could detach and fire off his remote control gauntlet. From Iron Man #322:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ntletsIM322.jpg

The Crossing armor also had built-in internal gyroscopes and gravimetric stabilizers to keep his balance during aerial combat. From Iron Man #325:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...scopesIM325.jpg

ORIGIN

The Crossing armor was first built by an insane Tony Stark and then repurposed by a time-displaced younger Tony Stark after the former's death in the Crossing. One of the major factors for his insanity was Immortus' machinations to have Stark betray the Avengers and resist the Timekeepers' orders to destroy the Avengers. From Iron Man #319, Avengers Annual 2001 and Avengers Forever #8:

IX. HEROES RETURN ARMOR

Tony Stark eventually came back in Heroes Return.

(please log in to view the image)

In order to pick up the pieces of his life and reputation as both a businessman and a superhero, Tony Stark built the Heroes Return armor. It was much more powerful than previous armors and also specifically guarded against further attempts to mind control him.

STRENGTH

The Heroes Return armor was much, much stronger than previous models. A large power generator comes crashing down and he catches and lifts it to protect innocents in Iron Man vol.3 #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth02IMv37.jpg

When Nova attacks the armor, he finds out how powerful the its pressing power is and gets slowly choked to death until being spared in New Warriors vol.2 #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Warriorsv29.jpg

The Thing tries to wrestle with him and a malfunctioning Heroes Return armor flexes and manages to wrest free in Fantastic Four vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...unt01FFv315.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

When the Heroes Return armor becomes sentient and Stark is forced to engage it in the older Modular armor, Stark himself admits, "My old Modular armor is no match for the new suit." And it shows as the Heroes Return armor easily tears the Modular armor apart. From Iron Man vol.3 #29:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth06IMv329.jpg

The Heroes Return armor was strong enough to strike and demolish a Kree Sentry robot in Iron Man vol.3 #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ngth01IMv37.jpg

A rogue War Machine pilot notes that Ms. Marvel isn't as strong as the Heroes Return armor in Iron Man vol.3 #11:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth03IMv311.jpg

Which shows when he sucker-punches her and lays her out in Iron Man vol.3 #23:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gth04IMv323.jpg

The Heroes Return armor becomes sentient and with a punch sends Nova flying in New Warriors vol.2 #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Warriorsv29.jpg

He re-dons the Heroes Return armor and takes the pain to Radioactive Man and Titanium Man in Iron Man Legacy #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...th07Legacy4.jpg

DURABILITY

The Heroes Return armor's durability to blunt force is exemplified here when he survives Count Nefaria slamming a huge freight ship directly on him in Iron Man Annual 1999:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Annual19991.jpg

Nova blitzes the armor with a volley of punches and the armor just casually shrugs it off in New Warriors vol.2 #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Warriorsv29.jpg

Thunderball nails him cleanly with his enchanted wrecking ball and he tanks it in Avengers vol.3 #16:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...vengersv316.jpg

Here he shrugs off a huge backhand from the giant Ultimo robot in Iron Man vol.3 #24:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...unt04IMv324.jpg

The Heroes Return armor was naturally resistant to piercing damage and completely bullet-proof to automatic arms fire and cannon fire. From Iron Man vol.3 #1-2 and Fantastic Four vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing01IMv31.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cing02IMv32.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ing03FFv315.jpg

Devastating energy attacks from the Destroyer armor don't put the armor down for the count in Thor vol.2 #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gy01Thorv21.jpg

A point-blank detonation from Nuke is shrugged off by the Heroes Return armor in Iron Man vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rgy04IMv315.jpg

Here, although previously compromised by an ionic charge, he withstands Count Nefaria's heat vision attack in Iron Man Annual 1999:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Annual19991.jpg

A glancing blast from Ultimo's eyebeams only briefly knocks out his jetboots in Iron Man vol.3 #25:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rgy06IMv325.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

When he re-dons the armor during World's Most Wanted, he asks War Machine to let him have it to make it convincing to Norman Osborn. Rhodey doesn't hold back and the Heroes Return armor performs admirably in Invincible Iron Man #11:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ergy07IIM11.jpg

Focused electromagnetic pulses from Radioactive Man tax his surge protectors, but the armor holds in Iron Man Legacy #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...gy08Legacy4.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...MP01Legacy4.jpg

A much larger electromagnetic pulse designed to disable stolen Stark exo-suits causes Stark to state "Only one suit of armor has that much E.M.P. protection." From Iron Man Legacy #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...MP01Legacy5.jpg

A tremendous planetary-wide electromagnetic pulse that "All the nukes ever built, detonated simultaneously, couldn't generate" doesn't shut down the armor. It only causes it to go on an over-aggressively defensive fritz. From Fantastic Four vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...nergy02FF15.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/.../HREnergy03.jpg

IX. HEROES RETURN ARMOR (cont'd)

DURABILITY

The Heroes Return armor was also highly resistant to temperature variances. Here he withstands multiple heat beams measured at 9500 degrees centigrade in Iron Man vol.3 #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture01IMv33.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The armor takes Firebrand and blitzes him straight through a volcano's core and molten lava in Iron Man vol.3 #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ture02IMv35.jpg

Chemical fire akin to napalm is shrugged off by the armor in Iron Man vol.3 #16:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ure03IMv316.jpg

Stark notes, "My armor -- or my mind -- has been taken over a little too often in the past to suit me... so I built some safeguards into the suit" and reveals that he was immune to Baron Zemo's mind-control which had enslaved the Fantastic Four and the Avengers (including Captain America and Thor) in Thunderbolts #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...nderbolts12.jpg

A highly amped Mentallo who was connecting to the entire planet's population hits a wall when it comes to Stark. "In order to safeguard my cybernetically controlled armor, I sport wristwatch circuitry which shields me from any sort of mental takeover..." From Captain America/Iron Man Annual 1998:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...anAnnual981.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

Stark makes mention of this again when he confronts the Controller. "I've got a special circuitry -- in my armor, in my wristwatch -- even in the travel clock that sits on my nightstand. It guards against attempts at mental takeover." From Iron Man vol.3 #13:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tal03IMv313.jpg

The Mandarin finds that his hacking of the Heroes Return armor was only temporary in Iron Man vol.3 #10:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ing01IMv310.jpg

Stonecutter, one of the Octossence's Exemplars notes that the Heroes Return armor was guarded against outside control "and quite effectively, too." It takes him a few tries to usurp control in Avengers vol.3 #25:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...vengersv325.jpg

SPEED

The Heroes Return armor was faster than his previous armors. Stark outright tell us, "But then, I'm faster than I used to be, too..." From Iron Man vol.3 #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...peed01IMv33.jpg

Breaking the sound barrier with his flying speed is nothing to the armor in Iron Man Annual 1999:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Annual19991.jpg

Flying across the Atlantic at high speeds doesn't even tax his power, "I'm feeling strong. The trip across the Atlantic did nothing to drain my power supply." From Iron Man Annual 1999:

IX. HEROES RETURN ARMOR (cont'd)

REPULSOR RAYS

(please log in to view the image)

The Heroes Return armor could emit a barrage of pinpoint repulsor rays to overload Spymaster's energy absorption shields in Iron Man: Bad Blood #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood2.jpg

"Wide-beam, shallow-effect repulsor blasts turn the glass fragments to powder" in Iron Man vol.3 #1:

He nearly vaporizes a full heavy artillery barrage with a "wide-dispersal repulsor blast" in Iron Man vol.3 #19:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ays02IMv319.jpg

As shown earlier, he can charge up a repulsor blast between his hands before letting it loose in Juggernaut: The Eighth Day #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...naut8thDay1.jpg

UNI-BEAM

Radioactive Man is sent reeling by a uni-beam blast at 89% intensity in Iron Man Legacy #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...am01Legacy4.jpg

Here, the Heroes Return armor ends up removing the repulsor node in his chest and channels his full power into a jamming signal to knock Ultron-16 for a loop in Avengers vol.3 #21:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...vengersv321.jpg

However, it doesn't take much power to activate a blinding flash effect in Iron Man Annual 1999:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...2Annual1999.jpg

PULSE BOLTS

With the Heroes Return armor, he used pulse bolts liberally. The pulse bolts "pick up ambient energy from the air around them -- the farther they travel, the harder they hit." When his targets were further away from him, he'd resort to the pulse bolts to take advantage of their nature. From Iron Man vol.3 #3 and Iron Man: Bad Blood #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...olts01IMv33.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood2.jpg

Or when he had to tackle tougher opponents like Fin Fang Foom and Ultimo in Iron Man vol.3 #17 and 25:

The Heroes Return armor was equipped with ultra-sonics. Differing frequencies could render opponents dizzy and unable to "stand, much less fight," from Contest of Champions II #1 and Iron Man vol.3 #17:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onicsCOCII1.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...onicsIMv317.jpg

The tight-beam sonics in particular could be used to trigger avalanches or penetrate thick hides and rattle bones. From Iron Man vol.3 #2 and 6:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIMv32.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...SonicsIMv36.jpg

He could use a more tangible sonic ramshot to blow Spymaster through walls in Iron Man: Bad Blood #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood2.jpg

Like previous models, the Heroes Return armor emitted intense electrical discharges. From Avengers vol.3 #5, Contest of Champions II #1, Iron Man vol.3 #16 and Iron Man: Bad Blood #4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Avengersv35.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...hargeCOCII1.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

The Heroes Return armor could shoot out sleeping gas and knock people out. From New Warriors vol.2 #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Warriorsv29.jpg

Pencil lasers could cut through solid steel in Invincible Iron Man #12:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lLaserIIM12.jpg

The Heroes Return armor had a built-in electromagnetic pulse emitter that could disable unshielded electronics around him without effecting his own armor in Iron Man vol.3 #5 and 21:

IX. HEROES RETURN ARMOR (cont'd)

FORCE-FIELDS

Naturally, the Heroes Return armor could project force-fields. From Iron Man vol.3 #23, Captain America/Iron Man Annual #1 and Black Panther vol.2 #8:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...rcefields04.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IM98Annual1.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...elds02v2BP8.jpg

He's protected from power draining tentacles by "gauntlets' non-conducting fields" in Iron Man vol.3 #23:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...lds03IMv323.jpg

Inertial dampening fields slow down bullet ricochets, from Iron Man vol.3 #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...penersIMv31.jpg

MAGNETISM

Since his "own techno-powers started with magnetism," the Heroes Return armor did not lack for impressive magnetism feats. He's actually turned off the magnetic locks in Spymaster's own boots with his magnetism in Iron Man: Bad Blood #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood2.jpg

He uses an "oppositely charged magnetic field" to change a gigantic shield's trajectory in Avengers Annual 1999:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Annual19991.jpg

He draws a cluster of repurposed Iron Man armors into a magnetic field and takes them into outer space in Iron Man vol.3 #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tism02IMv35.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

When Magneto was using Polaris' powers, the Heroes Return armor could access "his E-M frequency bandwidth" and counter it for a time in Magneto: Dark Seduction #3:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...kSeduction3.jpg

On a smaller scale, he's used magnetic beams to tow large machines along with him and magno-locks to maintain grip on a plummeting airplane in Iron Man vol.3 #14 and 24:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ism03IMv314.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ism04IMv324.jpg

A "gaussing beam" magnetizes "every metal part on that sky-cycle" sending it plummeting into a battleship in Iron Man: Bad Blood #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood1.jpg

ENERGY ABSORPTION

The thermocouples made a big return with the Heroes Return armor. They drained off heat beams in excess of 9500 degrees centigrade and freed him from a solid heat sphere that was so hot he couldn't measure it in Iron Man vol.3 #3-4:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...uple01IMv33.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...uple02IMv34.jpg

Fin Fang Foom breathing fire on him or Sunspot firing blasts at him "is the best thing that could have happened" to him as the armor simply absorbs them and uses them to top off his own power reserves in Iron Man vol.3 #17 and Contest of Champions II #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ple03IMv317.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion01COCII1.jpg

The Exemplar, Inferno, has to double and redouble her energy output to overload the Heroes Return armor's energy absorption circuits. Later on, his circuits adapted and she ended up having to generate "ten times the heat she was before[/i]" to tax his circuits. From Iron Man vol.3 #22 and Juggernaut: The Eighth Day #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion02IMv322.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...naut8thDay1.jpg

It was with the armor and Mjolnir that he and Thor freed themselves from the Exemplars' energy field entrapping the Avengers in Avengers vol.3 #25:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Avengers325.jpg

Normal sunlight also serves to recharge his armor in Iron Man vol.3 #22:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...bsorption03.jpg

ENERGY MANIPULATION

(please log in to view the image)

The Heroes Return armor was quite adept at energy manipulation against a wide range of opponents. Here, he "disrupt[s] the kinetic matrix of [Boom Boom's] 'timebombs'" in Contest of Champions II #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion01COCII1.jpg

The Heroes Return armor had "counter-measures capable of handling the powers of [his] fellow Avengers," including the Scarlet Witch's hexes in Contest of Champions II #5:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion02COCII5.jpg

He scans and replicates Nitro's peculiar frequency pulses to make him self-detonate over and over again in Iron Man vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ion03IMv315.jpg

The Heroes Return armor generates an inertial dampening field to pierce and disable Speedball's kinetic field in New Warriors vol.2 #9:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Warriorsv29.jpg

His onboard computers analyze psychic radiations and ends up "generat[ing] a neutralizing wavelength" in Incredible Hulk vol.2 #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tion04IHv27.jpg

IX. HEROES RETURN ARMOR (cont'd)

OTHER ABILITIES

The Heroes Return armor had an autonomous assembly function. It could fly and simultaneously free from from being buried in debris and outfits him instantly in Iron Man vol.3 #1/2 and 15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ModuleIMv35.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...oduleIMv315.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...emoteModule.jpg

Obviously, the Heroes Return armor scanners were far more advanced than previous models. He could use magnetic resonance imaging, night-vision, breathalyzers and infrared. From Iron Man vol.3 #2, 18 and Iron Man: Bad Blood #2:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners01IMv32.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ers07IMv318.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood2.jpg

(please log in to view the image)

He could run sensor sweeps for mind-control technology, perceive microbial threats, conduct full threat analyses, provide complete specs on enemy aircraft and detect motion down to one thousandth of an inch. From Avengers vol.3 #6, Contest of Champions II #1, 3, Iron Man Annual 1999 and Iron Man: Bad Blood #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Avengersv36.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ers03COCII1.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ers05COCII3.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...Scanners07b.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood1.jpg

He could also analyze teleportation energy signatures, replicate frequency pulses, track infinitesimal traces of ionic energy and analyze psychic radiations. From Contest of Champions II #1, Iron Man vol.3 #15, Iron Man Annual 1999 and Incredible Hulk vol.2 #7:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...RScanners04.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...RScanners06.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...aAnnual1999.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ners10IHv27.jpg

The armor's hacking abilities could control of Firebrand's harness and override weapons guidance and targeting systems. From Iron Man vol.3 #5, 15 and 20:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...king01IMv35.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ing02IMv315.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ing03IMv320.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...HRHacking04.jpg

The Heroes Return armor retained his image inducers. From Iron Man vol.3 #15 and 22:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cer01IMv315.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...cer02IMv322.jpg

In the end, the Heroes Return armor was so advanced... it actually evolved and achieved outright sentience. From Iron Man vol.3 #27:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ienceIMv327.jpg

OTHER ARMOR DEVICES

He could use radio jammers to set up a radio dead zone in an area or reverse missile guidance signals in Black Panther vol.2 #8 and Iron Man: Bad Blood #1:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...ammersBPv28.jpg
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...IMBadBlood1.jpg

Obviously, the Heroes Return armor had automatic extinguishers that sprayed flame retardant foam. From Iron Man vol.3 #21:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...tFoamIMv321.jpg

ORIGIN

After Tony Stark's death in the Crossing, a younger time-displaced Tony Stark took up the mantle of Iron Man. When he sacrificed himself during Onslaught, Franklin Richards' wish to save the heroes ended up merging their consciousnesses into one being. That amalgamated Iron Man returned from that Counter-Earth and designed the Heroes Return armor which would serve him well until it became sentient and went rogue. The armor would make a reappearance in Iron Man Legacy #4-5:

UPGRADES

The Heroes Return armor did have one significant flaw at its inception: it generated energy fields that were killing him. He would redesign the armor by revamping the cyberlinks, servos, power systems and insulation work. The first remodeled prototype Heroes Reborn suit that incorporated these upgrades made an appearance in Fantastic Four vol.3 #15:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/...grade01FF15.jpg

Eventually, Stark was able to streamline these modifications and refurbish the Heroes Return armor without bulking it up in Iron Man vol.3 #15:
