I haven't seen the episode yet but a clip shown them on dry land. I'm assuming that the people that dumb **** called on the radio hijacked it

I *think* it was intended to be more of a last ditch thing. ie. if the Walker horde on the island found their way to the family's home, he'd give them each a suicide pill to spare them the death of getting eaten alive or somesuch. Still cold as f*ck, though, given that they'd all still turn.
Wasn't expecting [SPOILER - highlight to read]: the little girl to get her hands on a pill and die, though. That was kind of sad and took me by surprise.

Doubt he cared too much about that, since he seemingly allowed his wife to turn and himself since he appeared to be waiting to be killed in his last scene.
Galan likely has it correct, pills were there as an easy death once the inevitable happened and the zombies ran over the compound.
Just so you know: I didn't think the first season was that great, but I hear it's more enjoyable if you marathon it.
The second season is currently just 2 episodes deep, but I've enjoyed them for the most part. The first episode started out with a hell of a bang... [SPOILER - highlight to read]: We see LA getting napalmed. We then learned in the second episode that pretty much every major city in the western US has been napalmed as well. Seems like that is the military's proverbial 'final solution' to try and get a handle on the outbreak. Interestingly enough, this plot point overlaps with the opening scene of TWD S02E05, which depicts Shane/Lori watching-on as Atlanta is napalmed shortly after shit hit the fan. That said, it seems like the military tried to wipe out most of the major cities in the US.
So yeah, that helps connect the dots a bit.

Yes. Pretty much everybody else took a class in Friday the 13th\slasher 101.
We've seen how people turn on each other during normal disasters. And they wanna trust total strangers during the apocalypse..
