Pretty interesting that in the same comic in which Joker beat Ras in chess, Bane's victory over him in chess is also reference.

The thing with Bane is- that was the first time he had even seen a chess board. He studied books on the game but of course in the Santa Prisca dungeon, no one is playing chess.

Also in Batman: Son of the Demon (which is somewhat canon b/c it introduces Damien and Morrison would later refer to it), Ra's and Bruce stalemate in chess.

Funny stuff, two of Batman main villains does better against Ra's in chess then he does.
Which got me thinking adding Batman to your scenario Stilt. Who would win the most in a round robin chess tourney between Bane, Joker, and Batman? Would be a good VS. thread.
So it's like if you wanna show how smart you are you have to beat Ras in chess? If it keeps happening though it's going to turn Ras into intellectual punching bag.

seems like now I remember Joker beating Lex in chess too. I think some writers like to play up his insanity and unpredictable nature. Also Hawkgirl beat Bruce in chess IIRC.
