The truth is because the threat of Communism didn't live up to the hype that was created around it in the past. There was a time Communism was seen as far worse than anything else, and in part it is because they believed it had the ability to spread in a way Nazi ideology never could. If you go read some quotes from some of the highest ranking generals during WW2 you will see that a not so small amount of them still considered Russia our #1 enemy even while we were allied with them against the nazis. In fact Hitlers own hatred of Communism was a reason some people looked the other way for as long as they did about any red flags that would pop up having to do with him.
The domino effect never ended up coming to pass.
