Calling on his resignation was a very blatant attempt to grab the high ground in preparation for what they thought would be an inevitable Roy Moore victory in Alabama. Of course, Moore ended up losing, so now they don't need the highground.
It will be tough for them to continue to try to ask Trump to resign if Franken renegs.
But yes in truth they did go overboard lol. That is why the entire situation was so hilarious. They created this atmosphere.
