I left the left, but wound up in the center with some left and some right leanings, rather than shifting into the right wing.
I still consider myself a liberal since I still very strongly believe in liberal values, but liberal is not synonymous with leftist.

I think we need to stop "framing the narrative" as Left vs Right / Progressive vs Conservative. It's as if one's political affiliation is the last bastion of sanctioned prejudice, and by labeling people This or That, we give ourselves a cathartic excuse for acting out against those "not like me".
I prefer to see this as Rights and Responsibilities: a focus on behavior rather than people. You need both R's. Rights w/o responsibility encourages narcissistic recklessness ("I can do whatever I want, nah nah nah"); responsibility w/o rights ... well, that's slavery.
We need to start focusing on what unites us, not divides us (and one of those things is our incredible system of laws, or Constitutional superstructure, with its separation of powers, which has enabled the US to thrive for 240+ years). Unfortunately, people dig and dig through websites til they find ones that hold their views, and this fosters hunkering down in little ideological trenches. I don't see how the US can survive til the end of the century if this national self-fracturing continues. E unum pluribus.

Very true. By definition on paper I am a true liberal aka classic liberal. True liberals though dont exist much anymore.
True liberalism, the people that like the idea of John Locke were high jacked by this neo progressives, totalitarian, marxist, socialist ideologies and movement.
If you go and look up classic liberalism. Its nothing remotley close to modern day liberalism. Which is this far left progressive identity politics based on race, sex, gender and feelings..

I prefer to frame it as individualist vs collectivist. I can respect an individualist political stance, such as liberalism, libertarianism, and several strains of conservatism, but collectivist ideologies such as marxism, fascism, naziism, the alt-right, SJWs/neoprogressives/cultural marxists, etc. just don't earn my respect. Generally though I can coexist with people I hold political disagreement with, one of my friends in highschool was an SJW.

Ditto. For all our differences in the cerebral, ideological sphere (be it political, religious, whatever), if we can maintain respectful stances toward each other, hopefully this will see us through difficult moments.
