Golden Age Hollywood Actress Jane Powell Dies at 92

Powell died at her home in Wilton, Connecticut, on Thursday, her friend Susan Granger told the New York Times and the Associated Press.

The actress, whose real name is Suzanne Lorraine Burce, shot to stardom after being cast in musicals in her teens and twenties.

In her first movie, 1944's Song of the Open Road, she played a character named Jane Powell and ended up taking the moniker for her own, the NY Times reported.

She is perhaps best known for her role in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers 10 years later, which Powell once called her "last really wonderful role in a film."

"The studio didn't think it was going to do anything," she said in 2000 while looking back on the movie, the AP reported. "MGM thought that Brigadoon was going to be the big moneymaker that year. It didn't turn out that way. We were the ones that went to the Radio City Music Hall, which was always such a coup."

In 1951, Powell starred in Royal Wedding opposite Fred Astaire. The duo played an American brother and sister touring in London.

In addition to her film career, Powell performed in touring musical productions including My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music and Carousel. In 1974, she appeared in Irene to mark her Broadway debut.

Powell was married five times. Her fifth marriage was to Dick Moore, who died in 2015.

The actress is survived by son Geary Anthony Steffen III, daughters Suzanne Steffen and Lindsay Cavalli, and two grandchildren.

"Jane was the most wonderful friend," Granger told the AP. "She was candid, she was honest. You never asked Jane a question you didn't want an absolutely honest answer to."

Melvin Van Peebles Dies: Iconic Filmmaker, Actor, and Novelist Was 89

Van Peebles gave American independent cinema exactly what it needed, when it needed it most: an explosive shake-up, with his unfiltered expression of Black consciousness and energetic style. The anarchic 1971 blaxploitation classic “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” undeniably shifted the course of American film history, and it was just one piece of a remarkably varied career that also encompassed forays into European arthouse cinema (“The Story of a Three Day Pass”), Hollywood comedy (“Watermelon Man”), Broadway productions (“Don’t Play Us Cheap”), novels, and performances. He was a transformative artist whose biting observations of social mores, unapologetic radicalism, and vision established a model for Black creative independence.

Willie Garson, From Sex and the City and White Collar, Dead at 57

Actor Willie Garson, known for playing Stanford on Sex and the City and Mozzie on White Collar, has died at the age of 57, reportedly after a battle with cancer.

Garson’s son Nathen confirmed the news on Instagram: “I love you so much papa. Rest in peace and I’m so glad you got to share all your adventures with me and were able to accomplish so much. I’m so proud of you.” (Garson would often speak of his son in interviews.)

A graduate of Yale’s drama school, Garson had TV credits that spanned four decades, but he was best known for two memorable roles: Carrie’s gay best friend Stanford Blatch on HBO’s Sex and the City — a role he reprised in both Sex and the City movies — and con man Mozzie on the USA crime caper White Collar, opposite Matt Bomer. Garson was slated to reprise his role as Stanford on the upcoming Sex and the City revival And Just Like That…, premiering this fall on HBO Max. (TVLine has reached out to HBO Max about the plans for Garson’s character.)

An HBO/HBO Max spokesperson said in a statement: “Willie Garson was in life, as on screen, a devoted friend and a bright light for everyone in his universe. He created one of the most beloved characters from the HBO pantheon and was a member of our family for nearly twenty-five years. We are deeply saddened to learn of his passing and extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

“No matter what project he was on, Willie was always a fan favorite,” an NBCUniversal spokesperson added in a statement. “Nowhere was that more true than on White Collar, where he took the character of Mozzie, an outcast conspiracy theorist, and made him lovable to the core. He will be missed.”

Sarah Dash, Singer And Co-Founder Of Labelle, Dies At Age 76

Sarah Dash, the singer and co-founder of the all-female singing group Labelle, best known for their 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade," died Monday at the age of 76.

Dash's bandmate Patti LaBelle announced her longtime friend's death on social media.

"We were just onstage together on Saturday and it was such a powerful and special moment!" LaBelle said on Twitter. "Sarah Dash was an awesomely talented, beautiful and loving soul who blessed my life and the lives of so many others in more ways than I can say. And I could always count on her to have my back! That's who Sarah was ... a loyal friend and a voice for those who didn't have one."

Labelle started out as the conventional girl group called Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and changed into an Afro-futuristic glam rock group (even changing the name to Labelle to complete the transformation) in 1971.

They also embraced a futuristic look — complete with spacesuits and feathers. With their biggest hit, "Lady Marmalade," the group also embraced a sexually suggestive and empowering message.

After the group disbanded in 1976, Dash continued performing as a solo singer, releasing several albums over the years. She became well-established as a session singer, recording and performing with Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones.

Her family announced the news on Monday and said she died from natural causes at her home in Santa Monica on Aug. 3, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Salt Lake City native was best known for playing Polly, the sidekick of David Wayne’s Mad Hatter on the television series “Batman” with Adam West, in 1967. She also sparred with actor James Coburn’s character in the 1967 spy parody “In Like Flint.”

Cynthia Harris, the Mother on ‘Mad About You,’ Dies at 87

Cynthia Harris, a versatile actress who played Paul Reiser’s assertive mother in the hit 1990s sitcom “Mad About You” and won acclaim in the British TV mini-series “Edward and Mrs. Simpson,” died on Monday at her home in Manhattan. She was 87.

Her death was confirmed by her nephew Dan Harris.

The Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning “Mad About You” aired on NBC from 1992 to 1999 and was revived in 2019 by Spectrum Originals, a streaming site. It starred Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt as newlyweds (in the roles of Paul Buchman, a documentary filmmaker, and Jamie Stemple Buchman, a public relations specialist) who, living in Greenwich Village, must cope with both frivolous and eventful barriers to marital bliss, including Paul’s overbearing mother, Sylvia.

Miss Harris’s Sylvia was a recurring character on “Mad About You” for four seasons and became a regular in 1997, often butting heads with Ms. Hunt’s Jamie but also sharing warmer moments. She reprised the role in the revival. All told, Miss Harris (who preferred that honorific) appeared in 73 episodes of the sitcom.

In “Edward and Mrs. Simpson,” a seven-part dramatization broadcast in Britain in 1978 and in the United States in 1979, Miss Harris played Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American for whom King Edward VIII, played by Edward Fox, abdicated the British throne. For her performance she was nominated for best actress by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

She made her Broadway debut in 1963, and appeared in dozens of television shows and movies. For 21 years she was also the artistic director and a founding member of the Actors Company Theater, an off-Broadway collaboration founded in 1992 that calls itself “a company of theater artists that reveals, reclaims, and reimagines great plays of literary merit.”

She appeared on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical “Company” in 1971 and in episodes of television shows including “Archie Bunker’s Place,” “All My Children,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” “L.A. Law,” “Three’s Company” and “Sirota’s Court.”

Miss Harris was familiar to radio listeners and TV viewers in the 1970s and ’80s as “Mrs. B” in commercials for the now defunct Bradlees discount department store chain.

Granville Adams, ‘Oz’ Star, Dies at 58

The actor best known for his performance as Zahir Arif on HBO’s “Oz,” has died following a long struggle with cancer. He was 58 years old.

The news was shared in a tribute posted by “Oz” showrunner and executive producer Tom Fontana on his Instagram on Sunday.

“Goodnight, sweet prince/and flights of angels sing thee to they rest,” Fontana wrote.

Fontana and “Oz” star Dean Winters launched a GoFundMe campaign earlier this year to help Adams and his family pay for the actor’s medical care. The campaign had gone on to raise $99,800, exceeding its $69,500 goal, though it remained active as Adams continued to require treatment.

“As many of you know, our friend and brother Granville Adams has been diagnosed with cancer,” Fontana wrote on GoFundMe in January. “In only a few months, the medical bills have skyrocketed to astronomical levels. Not only does he have to battle this ruthless disease, but now he has to fend off the hospital bills the insurance company refuses to pay. In this quarter alone, the unpaid bills have piled up to $69,550. We want to gather together and show Granville our love by clearing this quarter’s bills, giving Granville concrete support in his fight against this vicious disease.”

Adams was a cast member in all six seasons of “Oz,” portraying Zahir Arif in 48 episodes. After being incarcerated for possession of stolen goods, Arif undergoes a transformation and reforms himself through Islam to become one of the more tranquil prisoners in the Oswald State Correctional Facility. Adams also had a role on NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street” and appeared in “Empire.”
In 2007, Adams was cleared of a charge of negligent homicide after an altercation in a nightclub led to a man’s death. Adams’ attorneys pleaded self-defense, while prosecutors were unable to prove that Adams had acted negligently during the altercation.

Dorothy Steel, known for role in ‘Black Panther,’ dies at 95

Steel pursued an acting career at the age of 88, which led to her participation in the groundbreaking project that became one of the highest-grossing films of all-time

Marvel’s Black Panther film series has lost another leader.

Dorothy Steel, who made her feature film debut as a tribal leader in the 2018 blockbuster, died Friday at the age of 95, according to media reports. The cause of death has not been reported.

The actress, who played the role of Merchant Tribe Elder in Black Panther was cast again in the sequel Black Panther 2, which is currently being filmed in Atlanta. She was flown to her hometown of Detroit to spend her final days, WSB-TV reports.

The epitome of the adage that ‘it’s never too late,’ Steel first pursued an acting career at the age of 88. She was in disbelief when she scored the role in the groundbreaking film series.

With encouragement from her grandson, Steel auditioned for Black Panther and received a callback within an hour, putting her in a league with Hollywood veterans like the late Chadwick Boseman, whose character as the king of Wakanda was advised by Merchant Tribe Elder, and Angela Bassett, Wakanda’s queen.

Steel hesitated at first to audition for the character, dismissing the project as a “comic strip,” before her grandson convinced her to do it, according to the Washington Post, That ultimately led to her participation in one of the highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe releases of all time.

“It was just amazing, it truly was,” Steel said of Black Panther in 2018, WSB-TV reports. “If anyone would have told me I would be an actor, I would’ve said you got to be out of your mind.”

Steel said her role as Tribal Elder was fitting, especially because on set she also doubled as the resident grandmother.

“Chadwick [Boseman] the king. Every day, he would make sure if I was on the set, he would come by and make sure he gave me a big ol’ hug and kiss,” Steel said, theGrio previously reported. “We were one big melting pot of Black people and we knew we were doing something that had never been done before,” Steel added.

Before being picked up for Black Panther, Steel appeared on television, including one episode of The Trouble with Going Somewhere in 2015 and four episodes of Saints & Sinners from 2016 to 2018. After Black Panther, she was cast in an episode of The Oval and played the role of Village Elder in Jumanji: The Next Level. She had said that Black Panther 2 would be her final appearance on screen.

Steel was born on Feb. 23, 1926, in Detroit. In her first career, she worked for the federal government for decades, retiring as a senior revenue officer for the Internal Revenue Service in 1984.

She later called the Virgin Islands home for 20 years before relocating to Georgia to be near her son and grandson, according to the Post.

Steel says her leap of faith turned out to be one of her biggest blessings and she encouraged others to do the same.

“Keep your mind open and keep faith in yourself that you can do this thing,” Steel told the Post in a 2018 interview. “All you have to do is step out there and try it. And if you don’t make it on the first step, step out there again and you’ll find something you can step out on. But don’t just sit back. Life is not just about sitting back. Life is about stepping out.”

Stephen Sondheim, Titan of the American Musical, Is Dead at 91

Stephen Sondheim, one of Broadway history’s songwriting titans, whose music and lyrics raised and reset the artistic standard for the American stage musical, died early Friday at his home in Roxbury, Conn. He was 91.

His lawyer and friend, F. Richard Pappas, announced the death. He said he did not know the cause but added that Mr. Sondheim had not been known to be ill and that the death was sudden. The day before, Mr. Sondheim had celebrated Thanksgiving with a dinner with friends in Roxbury, Mr. Pappas said.

An intellectually rigorous artist who perpetually sought new creative paths, Mr. Sondheim was the theater’s most revered and influential composer-lyricist of the last half of the 20th century, if not its most popular.

His work melded words and music in a way that enhanced them both. From his earliest successes in the late 1950s, when he wrote the lyrics for “West Side Story” and “Gypsy,” through the 1990s, when he wrote the music and lyrics for two audacious musicals, “Assassins,” giving voice to the men and women who killed or tried to kill American presidents, and “Passion,” an operatic probe into the nature of true love, he was a relentlessly innovative theatrical force.

The first Broadway show for which Mr. Sondheim wrote both the words and music, the farcical 1962 comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” won a Tony Award for best musical and went on to run for more than two years.

In the 1970s and 1980s, his most productive period, he turned out a series of strikingly original and varied works, including “Company” (1970), “Follies” (1971), “A Little Night Music” (1973), “Pacific Overtures” (1976), “Sweeney Todd” (1979), “Merrily We Roll Along” (1981), “Sunday in the Park With George” (1984) and “Into the Woods” (1987).

Herman, whose real name is Paul Reubens, shared a memory of working with Cutell. He said, "I was lucky enough to be able to tell him how much he meant to me and that I'd never forget him. It's obvious and corny to say, but nevertheless true: he was amazing."

Mark Furman, a friend of Cutell's, also confirmed his death on Facebook.

Cutell was born in New York City on Oct. 6, 1930. His start in showbiz began six decades ago when he starred in the Broadway musical "The Young Abe Lincoln."

He would go on to become a familiar face on television following his 1964 appearance on "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

The veteran actor has appeared in several hit TV shows, including the ‘60s "The Wild Wild West," and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Starsky & Hutch," "The Love Boat," "The Bob Newhart Show," and "Kojack" in the '70s. He also appeared in a recurring role in "Alice" from 1983-84.

Joey Morgan Dies: ‘Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse’ Actor Was 28

Joey Morgan, the actor who made his debut in 2015’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and garnered additional attention for his performance in the Max Winkler’s 2017 Tribeca Film Festival premiere Flower, died Sunday. He was 28. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

“Joey Morgan came into my life nearly 9 years ago when I made Scouts,” tweeted Christopher Landon, director of the comedy Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. “He was quiet, funny, intelligent and thoughtful. And when the cameras rolled he was magnetic. He passed today and the news is heartbreaking. I am honored to have known him.”

A native of Chicago, and brother of actor Trevor Morgan, Morgan made his film debut in the Landon horror comedy, playing Augie Foster, one of three Boy Scouts defending his town against the undead creatures of the title. He co-starred with Tye Sheridan and Logan Miller — who played the other two Scouts — Cloris Leachman, Lucas Gage and Sarah Dumont.

Morgan’s next major casting was as a teenage computer hacker in the 2016 feature comedy Compadres, co-starring Omar Chaparro and Eric Roberts.

The following year, he co-starred with Zoey Deutch in Flower, a dark comedy about a group of teens who extort money from suspected pedophiles. Also featured in the cast were Kathryn Hahn, Tim Heidecker and Adam Scott. Following the film’s debut at the Tribeca Film Festival, Indie Wire named Morgan as one of that year’s festival breakout talents.

Deutch posted a photo of herself with Morgan on Instagram, noting, “Rest in peace joey. A deeply kind, talented, special person. We love you.”

Morgan’s other feature credits include Sierra Burgess Is a Loser and Camp Manna, both in 2018, and 2020’s Max Reload and the Nether Blasters featuring Kevin Smith, Greg Grunberg and Wil Wheaton, among others. On television, Morgan appeared in Chicago Med (2017), Angie Tribeca (2018) and, in 2019, Critters: A New Binge.
