Actor Tom Sizemore, known for tough-guy roles and scandal, dead at 61

Actor Tom Sizemore, known as much for his struggles with drug addiction and run-ins with the law as for his tough-guy roles in such films as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Black Hawk Down," died on Friday at age 61, said his manager, Charles Lago.

Sizemore, who was hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a brain aneurysm on Feb. 18, died in his sleep at a hospital in Burbank, California, Lago said in a statement on Friday.

A native of Detroit, where his mother worked for the city's ombudsman and his father was an attorney and philosophy professor, Sizemore attended Wayne State University and earned a graduate degree in theater from Temple University in Philadelphia.

As an aspiring actor in New York City waiting tables and performing in plays, Sizemore got his first break when director Oliver Stone cast him in a bit role as Vet #1 in the 1989 anti-war film "Born on the Fourth of July."

Additional supporting parts followed in the early 1990s, leading to a string of higher-profile work playing hard-boiled detectives in such films as Stone's 1994 mass murder drama "Natural Born Killers," the 1995 noir mystery "Devil in a Blue Dress" and 1995 cyberpunk thriller "Strange Days."

He also landed prominent supporting roles as frontier gunfighter Bat Masterson in Kevin Costner's 1994 western "Wyatt Earp," a violent sidekick to Robert De Niro's career criminal in the 1995 ensemble heist movie "Heat," and a paramedic with a messianic complex in Martin Scorsese's 1999 psycho-drama "Bringing Out the Dead."

Sizemore's first major leading role came in the 1997 horror thriller "The Relic," again playing a police detective. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2000 as best actor in a miniseries or made-for-television movie for his role as a mob snitch in "Witness Protection."

But he is best remembered for playing battle-hardened soldiers in two films - Steven Spielberg's 1998 World War Two epic "Saving Private Ryan" Ridley Scott's 2001 portrayal of the U.S. military's ill-fated 1993 raid in Mogadishu, Somalia, "Black Hawk Down."

On television, Sizemore won plaudits for his starring role as a police detective in the short-lived CBS television drama "Robbery Homicide Division." He previously had a recurring role on the ABC network's Vietnam War drama "China Beach," playing an enlisted man who falls for star Dana Delany's character.

Through it all, Sizemore's career was largely overshadowed by personal upheavals stemming from his acknowledged long-time bouts with substance abuse, which landed him in and out of jail and drug rehabilitation treatment, and a relationship with onetime Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss.

He was convicted in 2003 of domestic violence against Fleiss during their stormy yearlong romance, resulting in a six-month jail sentence.

Fleiss, who had served time in jail for running a 1990s call-girl ring for Hollywood's rich and famous, testified that Sizemore stubbed a cigarette out on her and once knocked her to the ground outside his home.

Sizemore, who denied the charges but did not testify at his trial, said in a letter to the judge that he had "permitted my personal demons to take over my life." The actor, then 41, also wrote that he was "convinced that if I had not been under the influence of drugs, I would have controlled by behavior."

A separate conviction on charges of methamphetamine possession led to court-ordered drug rehab.

In 2005 he was jailed for violating terms of his probation from the domestic abuse and meth convictions by failing a drug urine test when he was caught trying to use a prosthetic penis device, called a Whizzinator, to fake the results.

Sizemore's probation was reinstated after he checked into a psychiatric hospital for treatment of chronic depression and drug dependency that a doctor said the actor had fought for years.

He was arrested again on suspicion of domestic abuse in 2016 and the following year pleaded no contest, the legal equivalent of guilty in California, and was sentenced to three year's probation.

In 2010, Sizemore parlayed his notoriety and history of addiction into an appearance with Fleiss on the third season of the VH1's reality show "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."

Sizemore chronicled his turbulent life in the 2013 memoir, "By Some Miracle I Made It Out of There."

David Lindley Dies: Session Star And Multi-Instrumentalist With Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan Was 78

David Lindley, whose talents on string instruments made him a sought-after collaborator for Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan and more, has died at 78. No cause was given, but Lindley was reportedly suffering from a long-term illness. Lindley’s skill on guitar, fiddle and other instruments made him a first-call for session work, starting in the 1960s through today.

Lindley was part of The Section, a group of regular session players who helped shape soft rock in the 1970s.

“I’d listen to a song and see what worked. The song is the center of everything. If the song was about a friend of Jackson’s who died, you play something appropriate for that,” Lindley told Rolling Stone in 2010. “You don’t play a Chuck berry solo in the middle of ‘Song for Adam.’ A Chuck Berry solo is a great thing, but not that for that moment.”

Lindley worked in Jackson Browne’s band for most of the 1980s. The favor was returned by Browne when he produced Lindley’s 1981 album, El Rayo-X, which spawned an FM hit single with a cover of “Mercury Blues.” They played together through 2010 for live shows.

In addition to his wok for others, Lindley had his own bands, including Kleidoscope and El Rayo-X. He played altogether on more than 50 records.

Robert Blake Dies: Actor In ‘Baretta’ Was 89

Robert Blake, the controversial actor who won a Lead Actor Emmy for Baretta and starred in films including In Cold Blood and Lost Highway before a murder trial ended his career, died today of heart disease in Los Angeles. He was 89. His niece, Noreen Austin, confirmed the news.

Blake’s long career ranged from a childhood stint in “Our Gang” at age 5 through major films and television before he was acquitted of murder in the 2001 death of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley.

Over the course of 60+ years of working in Hollywood, Blake appeared in such classic films as Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) alongside Humphrey Bogart; In Cold Blood (1967) with John Forsythe; as well as a range of studio Westerns using the stage name of “Bobby Blake” during the 1940s. His final feature film role was in Lost Highway (1997), directed by David Lynch.

In television, Blake was best known for his role as streetwise undercover detective Tony Baretta in Baretta, which aired for four seasons on ABC from 1975-78. He was an Emmy Award For Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1975 and was nominated again for the role in 1977. He also earned two other Emmy noms during his career, for lead actor in the miniseries Blood Feud (1983) and Judgment Day: The John List Story (1993).

Baretta was created by prolific TV writer-creator Stephen J. Cannell and featured the memorable theme song “Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow,” sung by Sammy Davis Jr. It was a spinoff from another ABC crime drama, Toma, that debuted in 1973. But the show’s star, Tony Mustane, grew weary of the weekly production grind, so ABC brass decided to recast Blake in the role and retitle the series Toma Starring Robert Blake. But a few format tweaks later, Baretta was born.

The series debuted as a replacement show in January 1975 and finished its first season in the Top 25 among primetime shows. It leapt into the Top 10 for Season 2 — fueled by the lead character’s catchphrases including “And that’s the name of that tune” and “You can take that to the bank” — but would be canceled in 1978 after 80-plus episodes.

Several years later, Blake was cast as the lead of NBC drama Hell Town. He played Father Noah Rivers, aka Hardstep, who pretty much was Baretta in priestly garb, trying to bring hope to the East L.A. parish of St. Dominic’s. The series lasted only a handful of episodes in 1985.

On television, fans also watched Blake on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, where he was a recurring guest who appeared in funny skits with longtime friend Johnny Carson and other featured celebrities.

He is also remembered as a pitchman in commercials for STP, Geico and others.

But there was also a darker side to the Blake story.

Bakley, Blake’s second wife, was found shot to death outside of Vitello’s restaurant in the San Fernando Valley in 2001, after the couple had dined there. Blake told police that he had gone back into the restaurant to retrieve a handgun he’d left on the floor of their booth.

Blake was charged with Bakley’s murder in 2002, along with solicitation of murder, conspiracy and special circumstances of lying in wait. But a jury found him not guilty of the crimes in 2005 after a widely watched three-month trial saw Blake weep into the shoulder of his lawyer after the jury acquitted him. The seven men and five women found him not guilty of soliciting a former stunt double whom he met on the Baretta set to kill his wife.

And though Bakley’s children won a wrongful-death suit against Blake shortly thereafter, her killing officially remains unsolved.

During the course of the trial, their unhappy marriage details became sensational news fodder.

It was revealed that Bakley had at least a dozen aliases and 10 former husbands. The defense contended she had trapped Blake into an unloving marriage by becoming pregnant with his child — after first saying the father was Christian Brando, son of Oscar winner Marlon Brando. Thus, the motive for Blake, who referred to his wife as a “pig,” was established. But the jury didn’t believe the stuntman’s testimony, thanks to his history of drug abuse.

The judge ordered that Blake be given back his passport and $1.5 million bail.

In his later years, Blake wrote his memoir, The Life of a Rascal, and lived quietly in the Los Angeles area.

Chaim Topol Dies: ‘Tevye’ In Stage And Film Versions Of ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ Was 87

Chaim Topol, an Israeli actor best known for his role as Tevye in the film version of Fiddler on the Roof, died Thursday at age 87 in Tel Aviv after a multi-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Topol had a wide range of credits, but will always be known for the central character of Tevye — first in stage productions, then later in the film. He later returned to the stage with the role

Born on September 9, 1935, in Tel Aviv, Topol began his acting career while completing his IDF service in the army’s entertainment troupe, where he met his wife, Galia. After that, he joined a theater group, appearing in multiple productions before his first film role, the 1961 drama I Like Mike.

But it was his 1964 role in the film Sallah Shabati that first gained Topol serious attention, both domestically and internationally. Topol played the title role in the now-iconic film about the hardships of a Mizrahi immigrant family living in a transit camp.

The film became a smash hit locally, won best foreign film at the Golden Globes and became Israel’s first nomination for an Oscar in the international film category. A year later, Topol was cast in a small role in the 1966 big-budget US production Cast a Giant Shadow.

He had been playing Tevye in the Hebrew version of Fiddler in Israel when he landed the same role in a British theater production. He first appeared in 1967 and did several hundred shows as Tevye.

Topol starred in several dozen more films in Israel and the US, including a role in the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only. He also played scientist Galileo Galilei in the 1975 film Galileo, and was in the 1980 film Flash Gordon.

But as he later revealed, he played Tevye in more than 3,500 productions.

Gloria Dea, the Strip’s first magician, dies at 100

Gloria Dea, the first magician to perform on what would be the Strip, only to be rediscovered in the twilight of her life, has died. She was 100.

Dea died of coronary artery disease at 6:35 a.m. Saturday her caregiver, Beth Bowes, said Saturday morning. Dea died in hospice care at her Las Vegas residence. Plans for a memorial are to be determined.

Magician legend David Copperfield, who befriended Dea in her later years, said Saturday, “Gloria was amazing. She was charming funny and engaging. And in Vegas, as a young magician, she started it all. It was an honor to know her.”

Dea was an only child and had no immediate family.

Dea was a budding, 19-year-old entertainer when she performed at El Rancho Vegas on May 14, 1941. Her show that night at the Roundup Room is the first recorded appearance by a magician ever in Las Vegas.

In magic, she specialized in a billiard-balls routine and also a floating-card trick, routines taught to her by her father. A Review-Journal story about her El Rancho debut reported, “Miss Dea completely mystified the audience with her legerdemain. Her concluding trick, when a card jumps from a handkerchief to a quartered orange, was the hit of the show.”

Between her magic acts, Dea danced to such tunes of the times as, “You Couldn’t Be Cuter,” played by the hotel’s house band. “They had all these cottages, these bungalows, around the property,” Dea said. “I stayed in one of those. That’s where the entertainers stayed.”

Dea’s time onstage ended in the late-40s and into the 1950s, when she moved to Southern California and turned to movies. She appeared in such feature films as the 1945 “Mexicana,” the story of a “Mexican Frank Sinatra” (she played a dancer); 1952s “King of The Congo,” the co-lead of Princess Pha opposite Buster Crabbe; Ed Wood’s 1957 gem “Plan 9 From Outer Space” (where she played a “mourner”).

SALIVA GUITARIST WAYNE SWINNY DEAD AT 59

Wayne Swinny, founding member and guitarist of the band Saliva, is dead after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

A rep for the band tells us, "It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Wayne Swinny, the guitarist of Saliva. Wayne passed away this afternoon from a spontaneous brain hemorrhage while on tour."

The tragic news comes only hours after the band revealed Wayne was in the ICU after having the medical emergency.

Bobby Amaru, Saliva's lead singer, says, "I’m not even sure what to think or how to feel right now. My heart aches for Wayne’s family, his friends, and anyone who had the joy of being around him. My heart aches for his daughter Nikki. He loved that little girl so much ... He would go out of his way to make sure you had a good time. I’m grateful that I got to share almost 12 years of my life with Wayne on the stage and most importantly off the stage."

Amaru continues, "He was the older brother I never had. I learned so much from him and we had a blast together! I will cherish it all for the rest of my life! God Bless you Wayne. I know we’ll meet again!!"

Wayne had been battling for his life in the ICU. He was rushed to a hospital Tuesday and diagnosed with a spontaneous hemorrhage in his brain.

Wayne was one of Saliva's founding members, helping to start the band way back in 1996.

The wife of Saliva's former lead singer, Josey Scott, also posted about Wayne's death, saying the band is in "complete shock and heartbreak."

She says Josey referred to Wayne as his "musical soulmate" and she's remembering him for having a great sense of humor.

Wayne was 59.

Tom Leadon Dies: Tom Petty’s Mudcrutch Bandmate & Brother Of Eagles Co-Founder Was 70

Tom Leadon, the guitarist who co-founded Mudcrutch with Tom Petty and Mike Campbell and was the brother of Eagles co-founder Bernie Leadon, has died. He was 70. He died March 22, but no other details were available.

Heartbreakers and Mudcrutch guitarist Campbell confirmed the news on social media. “Tom Leadon was my deepest guitar soul brother,” he wrote on Instagram (see the post below). “We spent countless hours playing acoustic guitars and teaching each other things. A kinder soul never walked the earth. I will always miss his spirit and generosity. Sleep peacefully my old friend.”

Born on September 16, 1952, in Rosemount, MN, Leadon was the fourth of 10 children. His family moved to San Diego when he was 4 and relocated to Florida in 1964. He and Petty first played together as teens in Gainesville before forming Mudcrutch with Campbell, singer Jim Lenahan and drummer Randall Marsh in 1971. As they built a name around the local college circuit, Leadon left the band and moved to California, eventually landing a gig playing bass in Linda Ronstadt’s band.

Petty, Campbell, Marsh and recruited bandmate Benmont Tench followed Leadon to the Golden State in 1974, with the intention of visiting him — and seeking a record deal for Mudcrutch. The band released a single, “Depot Street,” which didn’t click but would end up on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ 1995 box set Playback, along with four other Mudcrutch songs. The band only lasted about a year in California before it split and later regrouped with drummer Stan Lynch and bassist Ron Blair and went on to have quite different career results.

Leadon later co-wrote “Hollywood Waltz” with his brother and fellow Eagles Don Henley and Glenn Frey. The track ended up on that band’s first No. 1 album, 1975’s One of These Nights, and was covered by country star Buck Owens the same year. While in L.A., Leadon jammed with the likes of Dobie Gray and Spanky McFarlane and landed a five-nights-a-week gig at the Scotch and Sirloin — at the corner of Pico and Sepulveda — with The Mark Bookin Band. He also taught guitar.

Leadon hooked up with ’60s hitmaker Johnny Rivers and toured the country with his band before joining the country-rock act Silver in 1976. The group hit the U.S. Top 20 with “Wham Bam (Shang-a-Lang)” and opened a U.S. tour for the Doobie Brothers before splitting up the following year. Silver also included future Grateful Dead keys player Brett Mydland.

Leadon then moved to Nashville and became a guitar teacher. He would get a phone call from Petty in 2007, not long after Mudcrutch featured prominently in Peter Bogdanovich’s four-hour documentary Runnin’ Down a Dream. Seemed the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer wanted to play with his old Gainesville pals again in that band with “the terrible name,” as Petty would say.

Leadon and Marsh reteamed with Petty, Campbell and Tench, and Mudcrutch released an eponymous album in 2008. The disc included “Queen of the Go-Go Girls,” which was written and sung by Leadon, and he, Petty and Tench did some three-part harmonies on such tracks as the single “Scare Easy.” The album made the U.S. Top 10, and the band did a one-off tour of small clubs in California that wrapped with five nights at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. The group released Extended Play Live, a four-song EP recorded at the Troubadour and the Ventura Theatre and featuring an epic 15-minute version of “Crystal River.”

Fast-forward to 2016, and the band resurfaced with Mudcrutch 2, which peaked at No, 10 and included Leadon’s “The Other Side of the Mountain.” He sang lead on that tracks and did background vocals on four others. The group did a national tour that spring and summer, including two nights at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, before signing off for good. Petty died the following year.

Mark Russell Dies: PBS Piano-Playing Political Satirist Was 90

Mark Russell, the political satirist who delivered his wisecracks to the tunes of his piano on PBS specials for nearly 30 years, died today of prostate cancer at his home in Washington, D.C. He was 90.

His death was announced to the Washington Post by his wife Alison Russell.

Russell, sporting a bow tie and standing behind a usually flag-draped piano, was a staple of PBS from 1975 to 2004, where his bipartisan jabs and jaunty playing melded with the gently intellectual tone of the network. With a persona and style closer to Will Rogers than Lenny Bruce, Russell was an affable TV presence whose topical observations offered a family-friendly alternative during an era when George Carlin was saying seven dirty words and Saturday Night Live was making pot jokes.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Russell briefly attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. before a stint in the Marines. By the early 1960s, he was presenting his song parodies as a resident performer as the Shoreham Hotel in D.C., building a name in comedy that led to PBS the following decade. In 1977 he was a regular on CBS’s summer replacement variety series The Starland Vocal Band Show, and from 1979 to 1984 appeared on NBC’s Real People reality show.

Russell gave his final performance in 2016 at the Carolina Theatre in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Vivian Trimble Dies: Luscious Jackson Keyboardist Was 59

Vivian Trimble, a keyboardist and vocalist from the ’90s rockers Luscious Jackson, died April 4 of cancer treatment complications. She was 59.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved friend and band member Viv on Tuesday,” said a band statement. “We were not expecting this. She was a great friend and a gifted musician and choreographer, but it was being a partner to David and a mother to Nate and Rebecca that gave her the greatest joy. We are devastated beyond words to lose our graceful sister.”

Luscious Jackson, named after an NBA player that amused bandmates Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser, and Trimble, formed in 1991. Trimble appeared on the group’s first two albums, 1994’s Natural Ingredients and 1996’s Fever In Fever Out. Both albums were released by the Beastie Boys on their label, Grand Royal.

Trimble left before 1999’s Electric Honey was released and was not part of the group’s 2011 reunion.

Trimble and Cunniff also collaborated on the Kostars, releasing a 1996 album, Klassic With a “K.”

She also had a duo with the Breeders’ Josephine Wiggs called Dusty Trails, who released a self-titled album in 2000.

Elizabeth Hubbard Dies: Emmy-Nominated ‘As The World Turns’ Star Was 89

Although best known for her portrayal of the tough-as-nails Lucinda, Hubbard won two Daytime Emmys for other performances: She won her first in 1974 for her role as Dr. Althea Davis on NBC’s The Doctors, and her second in 1976 for the daytime drama TV movie First Ladies Diaries: Edith Wilson.

Born in New York City, Hubbard began her TV career in 1962 as Anne Fletcher on the soap opera Guiding Light, and the following year played Carol Kramer on The Edge of Night. In 1964 she joined The Doctors, beginning a five-year run on the show. She also played the role from 1970 to 1977, and again from 1981-1982.

With the cancellation of The Doctors, Hubbard briefly pivoted to ABC’s One Life To Live in 1983, and the following year joined As The World Turns for what would be her signature daytime role of Lucinda Walsh. Except for a brief period in 1999, Hubbard remained with the show until its final episode in 2010. In 2005 her character was featured prominently in a storyline about Lucinda’s battle with cancer.

Most recently, Hubbard appeared in the digital drama series Anacostia, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2016.

Other credits include the films I Never Sang for My Father (1970), The Bell Jar (1979) and 1980’s Ordinary People.

Al Jaffee Dies: Mad Magazine Cartoonist Who Created Enduring “Fold-In” Feature Was 102

Born in Savannah, GA, Jaffee launched his comics career in the 1940s, contributing artwork for such publications as Joke Comics, Atlas Comics and Timely Comics, among others. During World War II he worked as an artist for the military.

Jaffee began what would be a lifetime association with Mad Magazine as a contributor in 1955. Although he briefly left the publication to work for the short-lived Humbug humor magazine, he returned in 1958. Through the years, he contributed the popular feature “Snappy Answers To Stupid Questions.”

But his most lasting contribution to the iconic Baby Boom-generation publication came in 1964 with the first “Fold-In” feature: A drawing that, when folded vertically, revealed an entirely different illustration, essentially creating a visual punchline complete with a new caption. The feature was inspired by the centerfolds that had been popularized by Playboy and other magazines.

In Fold This Book!, a 1997 collection of Jaffee’s Fold-Ins, Far Side creator Gary Larson praised the long-running feature. “The dilemma was always this: Very slowly and carefully fold the back cover … without creasing the page and quickly look at the joke. Jaffee’s artistry before the folding was so amazing that I suspect I was not alone in not wanting to deface it in any way.”

A four-volume hardcover boxed set called The Mad Fold-In Collection: 1964–2010 was published by Chronicle Books in September 2011.

In a 2010 interview with the Boston Phoenix newspaper, Jaffee recalled his first Fold-In. “I thought to myself … now it’s folded in and I’ve got to have something on the left side here, and something right side here. And the only thing that popped into my head was that Elizabeth Taylor had just dumped Eddie Fisher and was carrying on with Richard Burton. So I had Elizabeth Taylor kissing Richard Burton, and a cop is holding the crowd back – and just for the fun of it I put Eddie Fisher being trampled by the crowd. What a cruel thing to do! And then, when you fold it in, she’s moving on from Richard Burton and kissing the next guy in the crowd. It’s so simplistic and silly and juvenile! And anyone could have done that!”

Jaffee’s final Mad Fold-In was published in the magazine’s August 2020 Jaffee tribute issue, and served as his farewell upon his retirement at age 99. Drawn six years before — initially to be published at his death — the unfolded illustration depicts Mad mascot Alfred E. Newman beneath a slew of bad-news, out-of-business signs. When folded, the signs instead read, “No More New Jaffee Fold-Ins,” with a peaceful-looking portrait of Jaffee floating above the fray.

In all, Jaffee created more than 500 back-cover Fold-Ins, with subjects spanning zeitgeisty and hot-button topics from Beatlemania (the Fab Four’s folded image depicted them as bald has-beens) to President Donald Trump’s proposed health care plan.

In a 2014 video interview — see it below — Jaffee explained that he created the Fold-Ins without actually folding his original illustration, relying instead on a seemingly arduous process involving tracing paper.

Asked how long he intended to keep illustrating, he said, “I feel that as long as the gray matter in my dome is moving around correctly, I’m going to keep working.” In 2016 he was recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-working cartoonist in comics history.

Tributes on social media quickly followed news of his death, with comedian, actor and podcaster Marc Maron calling Jaffee a “profound influence” and “one of the greats,” and Portlandia producer Dan Pasternack saying, “The humor of several generations was shaped by his work.”
