Before the metric system, the French unit of length was the toise, which is about 1949 mm. The toise was divided into 6 Paris feet, each of which was divided into 12 pouces, that were further subdivided into 12 lignes. The use of 'Paris' to modify the foot suggests that there were other feet, and there were.
Differences between units of the same name at different locations were common in France, and the leading stimulus for the establishment of a uniform national system.

In old English, a league usually meant about three miles. In ancient Rome, it meant about 1.5 miles. And in general, it referred to how far a person or horse could walk in an hour.
Not very precise.

Maine has 3,478 miles of coastline - more than California (3,427), and over 5,000 miles of coast if you include all of the islands as well. Only Florida and Louisiana (mostly bayou) have more miles of coastline.

Coordinates were measured in grades on official French terrestrial ordnance charts from the French revolution well into the 20th century. 1 grade (or in modern symbology 1 gon) = 0.9° or 0.01 right angle. One advantage of this measure is that the distance between latitude lines 0.01 gon apart at the equator is almost exactly 1 kilometer (and would be exactly 1 km if the original definition of 1 meter = 1⁄10,000 quarter-meridian had been adhered to).

Although picnic tables can be designed with any dimensions, there is a recognized standard.
Tables typically have a height from 28 to 34 inches above the ground, with most standing at 30 inches. Rectangular table widths range from 28 to 30 inches, and lengths are either 6 or 8 feet.

Taking the LSAT is a marathon. The tests are a total of 175 minutes long and the writing sample is 30 minutes long.
When you add in the time for administrative work and a break, the whole LSAT test day “experience” is 4 to 5 hours long.

4 inches (10cm), or one hand width for measuring horses, is roughly the width of most people's hands measured across your bottom knuckles (without the thumb).

The original goal of the Gregorian calendar was to change the date of Easter.
In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced his Gregorian calendar, Europe adhered to the Julian calendar, first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C.

Cassette tape. Since cassette tapes and data tapes are very similar, the lifespan of cassette tapes is similar to that of magnetic tapes. Some have been known to wear out quickly due to excessive use. Others last upwards of thirty years.

Latitude Determines Day Length. Even if day and night aren't exactly equal on the day of the equinox, there are days when day and night are both very close to 12 hours.
However, this date depends on the latitude, and can vary by as much as several weeks from place to place.

Believe it or not, the earth is closest to the sun in winter and travels over 2,200 miles per hour faster than it does in summer. So fast, in fact, that winter, which is 89 days long, is actually 5 days shorter than summer, which is 94 days long, for the northern hemisphere. So summer is the longest season.
