But this is where the directors and writers are inconsistent.

The Russos claim Cap create an alternate timeline/universe by doing that (which would be massively irresponsible in and of itself), and that he came back to his own timeline at the end as an old man to pass the Shield on.

The writers claim Cap was always Peggys husband in the Prime timeline.

Problem with this is Caps character was such that he'd say he doesn't deserve anything for merely doing his duty.
