Everything new we see Kylo do (freeze the blaster bolt, mind probe people, make people fall asleep, freeze people, so on) he learned from Snoke.
Also Snoke has psionic powers. He can influence the minds of others, and apparently it was he that made Luke Skywalker isolate himself and feel like dying through mind-manipulation. Which is why Skywalker clearly doesn't REALLY believe that, as is obvious in the film.
And he also fought off the "dark things" in the Unknown Regions, which is basically the "boogieman" of star wars the authors are now using as an unknown to explain unexplainable things and move the plot along.
