I think it helps establish a more grounded or at least an average level in how these characters compare.
Certainly Aquaman won't be fighting the higher level of beings Diana has, but in terms of beings Aquaman can fight, he can do about as well as Diana. It puts them within the same league as opposed to just looking outside at highest feats only and just crossing your arms and going "nope". Maybe it doesn't mean much in a vs thread, but it's fun to see how they compare under random writers and establish some sort of baseline. At the very least, maybe she doesn't obliterate him in a fight?
At least that's how I see it anyway. A little something different.
When I get home I'll probably work on a true Colossus vs Thing comparison. That'll probably be a while though.
Within the comic books, ever since Flashpoint, whenever they get into a 1v1 it's shown as rather competitive. And while she doesn't fight as she would on the forum (more speed, more weapons, more skill etc.), where she'd beat him handily based on feats, I figured it's worth showing the opinions writer have of him, both directly and indirectly. Mera has gone under the radar, but I think she's gotten the same type of push as Arthur. As you said, in terms of common opponents, they do comparatively well with some exceptions, while Diana's higher end fights (Zoom and the like) would be hard for him to match.
This is a really good idea for a thread, so I hope it will stay active. Fresh change from 'highest of highs/lowest of lows vs lowest of lows/highest of highs' discussions.

I started reading Aquaman comics in about... 2008-2009 I would say (it was before Blackest Night, but after IC), after spending many years thinking of him as "the fish guy". I started to build up an idea in my head of how powerful he was even back then while reading the old PAD stuff and everything else leading up to IC, and the opinion I formed in my head was this:
In pure strength and durability (and those alone), Aquaman was in the same tier as Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman. Obviously they have a wider array of powers than he does, but that pure, pound-for-pound "how hard can you punch" stat? I thought he was easily in their bracket, if not on their level in general.
He's not been written well since Johns left. Some comics have been passable, and while I don't like how he doesn't have his PAD-level telepathy where he can talk to anyone but sea-life does what he wants because it basically worships him, limiting him to just contacting sea-life SHOULD have been used more creatively. There are literal oceans of creatures out there, real and mythological, that can be used in fights, and Aquaman does tend to fight people near water.
Dude just gets left behind because Jonzz is a better telepath, Diana is a better "mystical warrior", and because he's not black enough to be a diversity hire.
