Anthony Mackie on current Hollywood

This clip is actually from a few years back, but it's pretty on-point IMO and still relevant:

He's not wrong. Almost everything nowadays is just a prequel, sequel, spin-off, remake or adaptation. And he's also right about the movie star thing IMO. Actor names don't really draw people to films anymore. Or at least not enough to guarantee box office success.

I'm sure Daniel Day Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio etc agree.

Well its about demand. Audiences get more excited over franchises. They dont watch much original stuff like Baby Driver, Looper or Knives Out. And if they do, and they enjoyed it, they demand a sequel lol

Thats true yeah. RDJ was the highest paid, but outside of Iron Man hes had little box office success.

Tom Cruise and The Rock May be exceptions though.

Yeah, but that in and of itself changes the approach to making films. Now, everything needs to have enough of a backdoor left open for a potential sequel, spin-off or franchise to come out of it. It can't just be its own thing anymore. And that's going to affect how the films are made and what ends up onscreen, hence why the industry has also changed, as Mackie points out.

Those two have had a couple of bombs as well. Most notably, the Baywatch remake movie from not that long ago tanked pretty horribly at the box office IIRC.

Well you cant expect a perfect score lol. Even in the days of the big action stars, no one ever had that.

But on the whole those two do bring in box office pretty consistently.
