Goku says in the next film that only Buu and Janenba forced him to use SSJ3. I don't think Pikkon is within SSJ2 Goku's level of power to be a significant factor against Broly.

So even if you think Majin Vegeta was also "considerably" above Cell-era Gohan, I still don't see him winning.

Gohan was referring to his strength when he first fought Broly, which wasn't exactly representative of his actual power during the Cell Game considering he was the weakest among his group in that movie and he was the strongest among his group in the Cell Game. Even his diminished power in the Buu saga could be considered a considerable jump over his movie 8 self.
I scale Majin Vegeta to Goku, and if Goku didn't need more than SSJ2 to beat Broly then Majin Vegeta should fare alright.
You still have Broly overpowering the kamehameha from three saiyans... Gohan, Gotenks and Goku (either the real deal or the magical construct, movie is not clear on that).
We haven't seen anything and haven't been told anything about how that fight went. We're not aware of its context or even of the result.
Anything can happen off-screen. Even Galan's dirty fantasies about Krilling teabagging Tien and receiving a rimjob from him.
Broly since the films have stronger feats and scaling than the main timeline.
Even disregarding that in favor of a timeline where everything happened, Broly was beating down 3 Buu saga era Super Saiyans using family KHH on him and only lost cause PIS that was Trunks ki blast. Daizenshuu says his normal ssj form is also stronger than ssj Buu saga Goku.
