But "almost seventy percent" means that the number of gun owners is still at least eighty million people. Eighty. It's hard to believe that there isn't some kind of cultural component to it.

I'd say guns are a part of American culture, but it's the minority of the population who partake in said culture.

Surprise, surprise. Topping the list is Texas, followed by Florida.

Rural areas make up 48% of gun ownership. Suburbs are 25% and cities are 23%. The remaining 4% are unknown/outliers.

That being the case, how does rural violance, suburban violance, and city violance stack up against each other?

And now we know why big city pool hustler Jim never had a chance against country boy Slim. eek!

What I would say is that my argument was purely oriented towards guns and not intending to draw any parallels to the drug issue.

To add to the discussion, I am also aware of the argument of guns being a powerful deterrent against crime that seemed to be collaborated by the Pew Research study (I believe that was the source, can be wrong though) years ago.
This is a side of the issue also worth taking into consideration.

The issue of successful gun control in other countries is worth noting as well, I concur.
But I would add that we need to be very careful when juxtaposing policies of the US and other countires. Given its size, social ambience and cultural make-up the US is in many ways unique in a global context.

They aren't just a deterrent against crime.... the primary reason for the 2nd amendment is to deter the government from becoming tyrranical and stomping all over our individual liberties/rights.

Wusses can scream all day long about how tens-of-millions of private citizens wouldn't stand a chance against the government but I and most other freedom loving Americans would rather die fighting than become a slave to an authoritarian or totalitarian government.

Besides, I seriously doubt it would be nearly as easy for the government to crush any serious, coordinated resistance from a well armed population as they make it out to be. I mean, just look at how Afghanistan forces held our forces at bay for so long. It's obvious to me that hit and run guerrilla warfare would be an effective weapon against them.

Then of course you would also probably have like tens-of-thousands of military personnel at least who would simply refuse to follow illegal orders to fire on their fellow Americans who are simply protecting their God-given rights. When you join the military you swear an oath to the Constitution. I'm sure that many will actually remember that if the day ever comes when the government illegally orders them to fire on American citizens.

The real question is what will China or the UN do if it ever comes to that. Still, I would much rather die fighting than die as a slave or be among those who're slaughtered like sheep (as so many other tyrrranical governments have done to their citizens not long after disarming them) because I'm defenseless after being disarmed.

And for any idiots who think the United States government would never ever engage in the kind of mass slaughter of its own citizens as Mao, Stalin, Hitler, and so many other dictators have done you need to wake the f*** up to what had been going on in the world and the country recently and pay closer attention to the kind of scary totalitarian talk that has bern coming out of the mouths of Biden, Harris, Psaki, and other freedom hating democats. Yeah yeah, I know the talking heads at MSNBC, CNN, and the BBC never talk about things like that except of course when someone like Trump is in office then they just make shit like that up.

Ffs, they are talking about listing people who speak out against vaccines and lockdowns and who continue to question 2020 election as being terrorists. That shit is scary. You know that once you are labelled a terrorist it allows the government to take the gloves off and disregard all of your rights and do whatever the hell they want to you.

So yeah, we need our right to bear arms now more than ever. I'm not gonna engage with the idiots here who still make lame ass arguments that we should be disarmed.

For me its not even about practical applications, or letter of the law.

I simply feel you shouldn't address public lls by restricting personal freedoms. Marijuana was deemee a "gateway" drug for decades and made illegal because it was assumed anyone doing any drug at all will become a crack dealer at elementary schools, or some shite.

Some people are dangerous and some aren't. That's just life, and if you haven't done anything wrong, you should have every right to do whatever you want.

Yet other countries have successfully banned alchohol. Because what works for one country will not work for another, and vice versa.

Bingo.

It is false logic to think that because something works in other countries that it means it will work here.

Guns are ingrained into our culture. You have way too many people here who love their 2nd amendment right and will cling to it no matter what may come. There is just no way you are gonna disarm hundreds of millions of Americans without far more blood being shed than was shed in all the mass shootings combined.

It's just not gonna happen here without a fight... lots and lots of fights. And of course commie cowards like newjack are not gonna be part of any strike force that engages in attempting to disarm american citizens. He'd rather just hide behind his computer and lecture us all about how guns are sooooo evil and then let others put their lives on the line going door-to-door trying to disarm people.

Nah, 99+% of the "take my guns from my cold dead hands" ranters wouldn't actually put up an armed fight if guns were outlawed and the cops came to disarm them, those people are usually all bark and no bite.

There would be a lot of Rightist whinging and moaning and delicious tears though as they handed over their precious.

Remember when the full-on, hardcore, bunker owning doomsday preppers lasted 6 weeks in lockdown before crying they needed to get out to get their mullets cut?

Thems were good times.

So much for them being "law abiding".

And of course jaden won't have to participate in any dangerous door-to-door illegal seizures of american citizens' firearms either.

Like newjack, he'd rather just endlessly lecture us all on the internet about how we are horrible people for wanting to have the means to defend ourselves.

I'll repeat what I said to Pr earlier:

Non-americans should mind their own country's business instead of lecturing us about ours. That includes scottish people. wink

Why would they be dangerous? You're always so eager to tell us how law abiding these people are. Why would they suddenly turn into blood thirsty maniacs?

Why? America has been sticking its nose in everyone else's business for decades. Turnabout is fair play.

And besides, I don't have to be a chef to know when a steak isn't cooked properly.

And seriously, get out of ****ing fantasy land with that "a well-organised resistance" bullshit.
