Grumpy Old liberal Millenial

This is a thread for things I, a 30 something liberal, don't like about the world I live in. It will not be in any order. Not really designed to be political, but it probably will be. Basically, Truejedi's old man gripe thread.

You know what grinds my gears?

1. I bought an XBox 1 last year. I have always successfully stayed 1 generation of console behind the top generation to save money. Excited when Xbox series X came out, because it finally gave me my excuse to buy the older console. I still paid something like 275.00 for a refurbished Xbox One X, and then I bought some games for it, and set it up, and in typical old man fashion hadn't really had any time to get into them until today (my wife and I are home with rather severe Covid). So, the first thing I get today is that the Xbox needs to update. Fine. 1 hour later I push in the disc to start playing master chief collection (paid 40.00 for the disc, btw, I didn't want to pay for Steam, or Microsoft Store, or subscribe to anything, I just wanted to play the game I wanted to play....

First things first: I'm told "this game needs an update." But you can't right now, try again later. No option to play it without the update, but again, fine... 2 hours later I try again, and this time it says, update available. Great. Do it. I kid you not, 114 GB update begins downloading. Like wtf?? My first five computers didn't have 114gbs on them, combined...

I've come to the conclusion the game isn't on the disc at all, the disc is useless, and the game downloaded exactly the same it would have if I had just downloaded it (for free, my buddy tells me).

So that pisses me off. Then 3 hours later, that download is finished, and the game demands I sign in to an account I made last year when I bought the thing.. trust me, that password is GONE... (So many passwords will be another entry on this thread, if I remember to do it...) So I spend another half hour creating a new account.. by the time I got it actually loaded and ready to play I didn't even want to anymore. I'm a grown man who wanted to escape for a couple hours playing a game, and despite spending a bunch of money to do so, they still make it prohibitively difficult... Why would I have to download the game I paid for? Why would I have to sign in to an account on my own console? I feel like SNES was the golden age of video games and we didn't even know it....

thanks, and yeah it sucks. Also pissed that I got vaxxed and boosted and still feel like this is worst cold/flu I've had in my life. I was asymptomatic for the most part when I got it in 2020.

Really annoys me this, I have so may passwords and PINS to remember now, I remember when you could have one password for everything, now your password has to contain upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, symbols, lines from Shakespeare sonnets and a photo of your birth doctors graduation. And it's still being used by someone apparently.

I'm also an X-Box user. Really pissed off with the fact that I'm sometimes unable to play a game that I've paid for on a console I own either because of updates or no reason at all which happened the other day.

Agreed on this. I kind of have a "formula" or pattern of passwords, so if they would tell me the password requirements, I'd have a chance, but just randomly guessing? I reset probably a third of my login attempts...

I hate self service in everything.

Self checkouts. Self ordering kiosks at fast food restaurants. Every time I call a help number and they say "you can also go to our website to deal with that.". (like I remember the password to your website...).

I don't work for your company, I don't want to work for your company, and because you make me do your labor, and help myself, your customer service is terrible. I also love when I'm using self checkout, and the thing won't stop screaming about "put things in the baggage area, take things out of the baggage area...

I talked to a person about that at Target the other day, about how should I know what to do with items, I've never been trained, and I don't work there: and she said " well lots of people try to steal items through the self checkout, so we have to watch closely. It's like, maybe, just maybe, they don't work there either and just because they don't ring everything up, it doesn't make them a thief, it just makes them bad at the job you're not paying them to do...

And don't even get me started on do it yourself Covid tests we all take at home (paying 10 bucks a piece for) then no one reports, and we all pretend Covid has gone away because we've basically stopped keeping track of cases.

Welcome to the 2010s. This is how video games work now. Discs are obsolete, and if you've picked some up anyways, they are effectively just keys to unlock your downloaded games. Which wouldn't have been locked in the first place had you gone for a direct download instead.

Steam and the Microsoft Store can be accessed for free.

Oh, I get it. I just don't like it. One of many things that are way worse than they were when I was younger. Used to be, you bought the game, you had the game.

Doesn’t GameStop allow you to return used games a week after purchase?

I love self-check outs, electronic menus/ordering at restaurants, and online troubleshoot services -- I can't empathize there, as I prefer not dealing with people.

I'm all aboard the digital video game train too, as it's just plain easier. There are also games and platforms that allowed you drm-free versions of your digital purchases, so you can still own them if it's important to you.

I do hate all the damn account making for games though. I bought Immortals Fenyx Rising since it seemed interesting and holy ****...

Why do I have to make an Ubisoft account just to play the ****ing game I bought?

I just moved apartments and replaced some things including a new TV, modem, Xbox. And I know it makes me grumpy and old but I hate that every new device requires dl'ing a different app to walk me through installation.

I miss just being able to plug something in and hit the power button.

I do love self checkout though. I already know what I'm buying so I can scan it and bag it quicker on my own. And the less time spent waiting in lines, the better.

Oh it's true. But not today... And it really probably will discourage me from buying games in the future... I understand I'm not there target audience anymore, I guess that's probably it.

In truth, how have we all settled for such terrible service? Larger issue really.

You ever try telling someone you don't have a phone that downloads apps, just to see their reaction? I did that the other day to a 20ish year old who told me I could download an app to help myself... I said that to amuse myself, and it worked. I turned into a geriatric right in front of his eyes. It was extra special treatment after that. "Poor grandpa, lost in a modern world" treatment. Kinda hilarious.

Wouldn't worry about it. The AAA games industry is about to collapse thanks to a lovely combination of chip hoarding by countries and console hoarding by scalpers. There now isn't enough PS5s in the hands of actual gamers to justify spending enormous sums of money developing big titles. The biggest selling PS5 game has sold 1/10th the number of copies of the biggest selling PS4 game.
