i always thought the phoenix was just the phoenix force that looked like jean, and i thought jean was placed in a cacoon at the bottom of the ocean, it was the only way she could survive( the phoenix force and jean made a deal that if jean wanted to live she would have to be put in this cacoon) turns out jean was never found? i thought thats what the story was all along!
originally the Phoenix was meant to be her final mutation, that was the original idea but was later said that the PF was a cosmic entity masquerading as jean, that was scrapped and the idea was reverted back to what was intended
Basically just listen to P Avatar 9. Jean has in her the genetic ability to tap into the primal force of creation which makes her a phoenix. There is no seperate firebird entity that takes people as hosts as per current continuity.

Phoenix 1 was Baron Zemo, Phoenix II was another piece of Jean but dressed up as her in an identical body, Phoenix III is Marvel Girl II Rachel, and Phoenix IV is Jean, since she took the name last but she always was Phoenix, she jsut didn't know yet, hope that clears things up
O sry, but seriously it took me like 4 diet cokes and like 2 marvel encyclopedias and 2 comics, Ok so Jean is alive but not in the physical sense, she is alive in another plane of existence (White Hot Room) like Phoenix central where all embodiments of Phoenix live, but Jean is still trying to find all her pieces, thats why she went back. Now about the who's who thing Jean, Barom Helmut Zemo actually has nothing to do w/ the PF, Jean is in essence all Phoenixes, Dark, White, etc. The piece that made another body is another piece of herself, like a personality. Rachel is her daughter which means she inherits Phoenix genes so i guess you could say its her, and Jean pr Ph4 is well, Jean and Phoenix. pheww, any other questions?

and the people that can use the phoenix force are who? rachel summers(phoenix3)? nate grey? and nathan summers(cable)?

You're right about Zemo, but P2 was still Jean, just a different personality who didnt know she was Jean, and youre right Rachel is Jean's daughter not Madelyne's, and its not so much as tapping into the Force its like Jean is the force's human self, but they are one and the same, like Jesus is God on Earth and stuff. Rachel is still able to use a small amount yet still powerful piece of the Force but only because its her mother, its like trying to control your mom, there's a lot of backstory, check en.wikipedia.org and search for Rachel Grey, and Cable and X-Man can't tap into the Force themselves. About the White Hot Room, (like Phoenix headquarters) its where all pieces of Jean are, but Jean lost a few and is still trying to find them all, yea she's always been pieces she just didnt know. You should check out New X-Men, "Here Comes Tomorrow" and "Phoenix: Endsong" they might clear some things up, if u still got more questions, just PM me and I'll see what I can find. <oww, finger cramp>

Jean died because of "Xorneto" right? Well her body was resurrected by a piece of the force that the Shiar revived so they could try to destroy it. Then the whole Endsong Saga happened and then Jean went back to the White Hot Room finding her pieces so she's technically alive but not in this plane of existence, if you want full summaries check uncannyxmen.net under issue summaries then under X-Men (2nd series) New X-Men 151-154 that is the "here comes tomorrow" arc and that'll help you understand the White Hot Room thing and then look for the summary for Endsong and that'll clear up the whole Jean/Phoenix thing.

Phalanx is a techno organic alien that absorbs stuff..it can absorb metals quick..plants not so quick..can't absorb mutants..thier dna is too advanced..their was a two parter about them on the old xmen cartoon..it was pretty good.
