Director Alfonso Cuaron Talks 'Harry Potter 3'

Director Alfonso Cuaron recently spoke about taking on such a huge franchise as Harry Potter with Variety. "I was kind of amused about the whole thing. Ever since I did A Little Princess, I've been looking for another family movie to do. And when I read this, I fell in love with it." says Cuaron.

Talking about how Rowling's "Potter" series grows progressively more ominous as it progresses. Cuaron says, "I don't know if 'dark' is the word for it because there's a great deal of humor (in the third tale). I would say that rather than going into darker territory, it goes into more emotional territory. Because the characters are a little bit more grown up, the experience is completely different. In the first two books, the fear was outside, like a boogie man. But here, the fear comes from inside. When you're 13, you stop believing in the boogie man and start dealing with the monsters inside."

Cuaron also talked about the reaction of the younger cast member on him taking over from Chris Columbus, "I think they're excited. They all had a brilliant time with Chris, and they all love him. But we've all been hanging out together, and I think they're excited about me directing. Since their characters have all turned 13 and are in their early teenage years in this one, I'm encouraging them to have more attitude."

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will be hitting theaters November next year.
