Peter Berg Takes On 'Lone Survivor'

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Universal is the "Lone Survivor" in the tug of war over Marcus Luttrell's life story. Peter Berg will adapt and direct the feature about a Navy Seal who led a team into Afghanistan on a mission to kill a Taliban leader but was the only one to survive.

Several producers were vying for the tome, published by Little, Brown in June after Luttrell exited the service. Attorney Alan U. Schwartz of Greenberg Traurig, who helped Luttrell find a publisher for his account, arranged for the former soldier to meet with potential writers and producers for the film version of his story.

I read the book and although it was good read there were some questions in my mind. The primary question I have is..why, when the mission had obviously been compromised by goat herders who the SEALS chose to release, didn't the team call for extraction..immediately? Maybe there were security issues that the book shouldn't reveal but it is a serious defect if one is to believe in SEAL professionalism...and I do.

Both Army and Navy SOF Forces have been compromised on a regular basis in the mountains of Afghanistan. Although the terrain may seem challenging to most; It is simply the "Back Yard" of it's inhabitants. There have been many instances when a goat herder or child has discovered the tactical location of a team but the trend has rarely resulted in compromise. Even if Mike, Marcus, Danny, and Matt had called for an extract; it could have taken hours or days due to location/ weather/ comms. Even if extraction was readily avaiable, Mike Murphy would not endanger a QRF Team/ Helo with a daytime request. From experience, I can tell you they did nothing wrong.

Best book I ever read! America still has what it takes. This film should be a welcome change from the loonie left's constant accusations and bombardment. Support our troops!

Let's all hope Peter Berg, and Hollyweird get this one right.

The book was astonishing, powerful, heart-wrenching. I had an emotional hangover after reading this book. Marcus Luttrell in my opinion is the greatest American military hero to come out alive...God bless him! I've heard he was involved directly in the making of the movie-it can't go wrong- the movie will be incredible. I've also heard that Peter Berg is truly dedicated to the account and the accurate re-telling of the operation.

Frogman 234,
I agree with your comment. My only questions are.....of course in 20/20 hindsight, are
should they have aborted and come again another day? Also, why was Danny not able to connect to the base via comms as he was attempting, to call in close air support during the firefight?
My strongest support for these guys and looking forward to the movie.
