Hannibal Prequel To Start Shooting

Anthony Hopkins is to star in the third installment as Hannibal Lector, in the prequel 'Red Dragon', reports AP. 'Red Dragon' is an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Harris, the movie is set to start this coming January 7 2002.

The movie is to be directed by Brett Ratnet ('Rush Hour', 'Rush Hour 2'), and is to star Anthony Hopkins, Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson, Harvey Keitel, Mary-Louise Parker and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The book previously was adapted for film in 1986 under the title Manhunter, starring Brian Cox as Lecter.

The new script for Red Dragon was written by Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for the screenplay of 1991's The Silence of the Lambs, which won the best-picture Academy Award and earned Hopkins an Oscar in his first Lecter outing. Hopkins reprised the role in Hannibal, released last winter.

Red Dragon takes place years earlier, with Norton playing an FBI agent who quit after his near-fatal encounter in capturing serial killer Lecter. The story brings the agent out of retirement, using the imprisoned Lecter to help catch another mass murderer.
