Jeremy Renner, winning critical raves for his performance in "Dahmer" as the late serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, has signed on to star in a lead role in Columbia Pictures' "S.W.A.T."

The project, directed by actor-helmer Clark Johnson, is aiming for a start date later this year, with Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson also starring.

The film's story line centers on an arrested drug kingpin who is transported by a Los Angeles Police Department S.W.A.T. team -- led by Jackson's character -- out of the city and into federal custody. Plans go awry when the kingpin offers $100 million to anyone who can free him.

The project sees Farrell and Renner starring as Jim Street and Poker, respectively, two members and close friends on the S.W.A.T. crew who have a huge falling out and become adversaries.
