Screenwriter Linda Woolverton ("Beauty and the Beast") is to scribe "Fathom" for James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox, reports Variety.

Woolverton has agreed to script the fantasy adventure of a young woman named Aspen who discovers she is descended from a mysterious race that evolved below the ocean's surface. Subsequent journey of self-discovery features battles both underwater and on dry land.

Fox Animation originally acquired the project three years ago. Lightstorm came on board last year, under its overall deal with Fox, to develop a live-action version of Top Prods.' comicbook series "Fathom" with the studio.

The original "Fathom," created and illustrated by Michael Turner, kicks off with a young girl found on an abandoned yacht with no memory of her past. The underlying theme of an ordinary person facing extraordinary circumstances drew the interest of Cameron, who will produce with Lightstorm partner Jon Landau and prexy Rae Sanchini.
