I'd be interested to know what everyone's 5 desert island films are. That is basically assuming you have a cinema/DVD player while stranded on your desert island! I don't think they have necessarily got to be cinematically the greatest films of all times, just 5 films you can't live without and why, here goes:
1) The Empire Strikes Back. My favourite of the four because it has so many facets and that revelation.
2) The Godfather. Though many think Godfather 2 is a better film and I can see why, I can watch the first over and over again.
3) Pulp Fiction. One of the best scripts ever written!
4) Schindler's List. To remind me what humans are capable of.
5) Citizen Kane. Not taking this would be like not taking Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or the full works of Shakespeare with you. cool

Texas
1. American Beauty
2. Alien
3. Best of Show
4. South Park- Bigger Longer and Uncut
5. Die Hard

King Jedi
I'll leave the four SW films out because they would be the top four. These aren't in any order of preference.

1. Zulu - Just incase I get invaded by an army of angry locals, this film will show me what to do.

2. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - The second best story George Lucas has ever written.

3. The Usual Suspects - Brilliant, simple as that.

4. The Shawshank Redemption - To put me in a good mood.

5. Saving Private Ryan - It's just a great film.

FLIPMODE
1-Die hard
2- E.T.
3-Jurassic Park
4-Mission Impossible
5-Forrest Gump

Texas
Hey Flipmode, I couldn't help noticing that you selected Die Hard as one of your desert movies. It's my all time favorite action movie. A couple of weeks ago I was in Century City, and I got to go into that actual skyscraper. It's called Fox Tower and it looks much smaller in person. Oh, a cool little side note, the security guard told me that Florence Shapiro, OJ's defense attorney, has an office in that building on the 15th floor. Just thought I'd share! smile

King Jedi
What do you think of Die Hard 2 and 3? I really like all three.

FLIPMODE
WOW, Texas, that is cool. It's smaller?...Aw man, now my dreams are ruined.

But Yeah, Die Hard is the best action movie ever created. Look at all the clones that were spawned. The Part Bruce Willis got, allowed ANYBODY, to be a possible action star. Not Just Arnold and Sly. And Lets Face it, nobody had the Sarcasm that Willis had back then. He kind of Invented the whole attitude, especially in a "Die Hard" situation.

I loved that fact that, for the first time, I was wacthing a movie, where the hero, did'nt WANT to be there, did'nt have any real vendettas', and was'nt there to take someone out, like he was invincible. So the character was a a first for action. As for the action, it's very climactic, and very tense. I mean the movie was done a heck of a lot more realistically then anything I've seen at the time. When something exploded, he got hurt, when he steps in glass, it actually hurts him, AND he has to take the time to take it out of his foot. Amazing he's human.

At the same time the movie is not so real that it's slow paced and boring, it's stays up there with all the best action.

And it's the only movie where I would give all the Supporting cast some award. Everyone was good. EVERYONE. From Hans to Argyle the Shoufer. And Alan Rickman, probably played his best role in this, and in Robinhood prince of thieves.

And the Story was designed so perfect, there were no holes. one of the best examples of that, I think(a great scene), where John, runs into Hans, and Hans plays like a hostage who escaped. Again Amazin. I remember people in the audience saying "shoot him, shoot him". LOL. But there was no way for John to be Sure it was Hans, because they've never seen each other. And Hans fakes, a californian accent. I was floored by that.

Best Story, Best setting (an office building? amazing), best hero best villain, best action.

Die Hard 2: I loved it.
Why I think in way's it's better than the First: Action wise, alot of cool things were done. Nothing tops the Plane fuel explosion at the End, which also makes the Runway Lights for the Landing planes. Im sorry, but no action movie can top that one. The scene with the grenandes, in the plane...OMG!!, who thought of that?? That is one of the best scenes ever thought of. Period.
HUGE plot twist. The good guys, ARE the bad guys...but not until your half way through the movie. That's something no one expected. And makes this movie stand on it's own, when compared to the first.

Why It will never be better than the first: The Setting is not as good. Some of the sets seem,...well like Sets. Needed a little more realism, only in some places though. And basically it came after Die Hard 1. The main villain is some what Low Key, but if you think about it, who can best Alan Rickman as hans as a Villain?

I have to give to renny harlin, he made a great sequel.

Die Hard: With a Vengeance. I dont want to Spend to much time nitpicking this movie, but I must say, It was different. I do Like it, but not better than the first 2. Im glad Mctiernan came back to Direct. And I really Liked Sam jackson. But what Probably made this movie suffer the most, is what Part 2 ALOMST suffered from. A Weak villain. Part 2 redeamed itself because the villains were there all along, you just did'nt know it. In Psrt 3, Simon was weak. And too bent on Reveange, ala the title. But he gave John too many chances, if he was really angry, he just would haved sniped him. So simon was just a mental case. I did enjoy the violence in this one, all the blood, and the scene when they jumped off the bridge. Alot of good dialogue in here that is very funny, which brings us back to the feel of part 1. Part 1 had plenty of great dialogue and was very funny at times. I think that is the main difference between Renny harlin, and john Mctiernen.

King Jedi
I didn't like the ending to Die Hard 3. The movie seemed to stop and then they decided "well we have to kill the bad guy" so they added it at the end. It just seems disjointed.

FLIPMODE
I agree, the ending was very humble compared to the Rest of the Movie. Anyone have it on DVD? Im sure there are alot of missing scenes.

Im also kind of upset that the title was changed from "Die Hard:New York". I just Liked the sound Of that.

King Jedi
Nah, With a Vengance is cool. Are they going to make Die Hard four?

R.C
When Harry Met Sally - Classically funny
The Breakfast Club - Just a cool film
Singing in the Rain - Gene Kelly; Say no more...
Deep Impact - A good special effects movie with powerful, character written drama underwritten
Four Weddings and a Funeral - <ust have seen it 15 times at the cinema

sand person no. 10
1 the sting - funny, good story and twists
2 the italien job - mini's racing around turin, is there anything more fun
3 raiders of the lost ark - of all 3 indi films the most realistic and though provoking
4 fight club - funny, serious, brilliant twist and ed norton's the best actor i've seen
5 shawshank redemption - say no more

leonglee
If I had allowed myself 10 votes, I think the Shawshank Redemption and Raiders would feature in there somewhere. Fight Club was brilliant wasn't it? Fresh, irreverent and wonderfully shot. Very unbelieavable though!!! smokin'

Zereil
hmm, I've acted in the 1st performance of the breakfast club stage edition anyway akin to everyone else missing out star wars

1) Dogma
2) Chasing Amy
3) Mallrats
4) Matix
5) Blade

these arent all necessarily the films I'd say were th best ever but the 5 I'd keep watching on a desert island...

finti
1. All four SW just because they are great
2. All three Indiana Jones movies
3. Wariors
4. Soap(Peter Sellers) extremely funny
5. All Pink Panther movies .

This way I got a bunch of films to watch on an desert Island, and then I would have kicked Robinson Cruso and Tom Hanks ass.
No volleyball for me no way. big grin

DARTH LORAC
Here is my list

1. Crouching Tiger, Hiden Dragon. Best movie that I have seen all year.

2. Schindlers list. Just a reminder of what man is capable of.

3. Leon ( full international version) This film has everything. brilliant and thoughtful story. Characters that you admire and love. As well as brilliant action sequences.

4. The matrix. Science fiction as it should be. Thinking mans science fiction or as close as we will ever get to it on film.

5.Trading places. Need somthing to make you laugh. Easily one of the funniest movies ever made.

Texas
Since we now know what everyones five favorite movies are, lets turn things around and ask what five movies would you never want to be stuck on a desert island with. Mine would have to be:
1.Blank Man
2.Star Ship Troopers
3.Robo Cop 3
4.Warriors of Virtue (dont ask)
5.Jingle All the Way

King Jedi
1. The Matrix (stupid and boring)
2. Titanic (no comment)
3. The Thin Red Line (one of the worst films I've ever seen)
4. Any Tarantino movie.
5. Total Recall

I'd add Terminator 2 to my list that I would take with me because I watched it last night and remembered how great it is. smile

Texas
OMG, I love all those movies *Faints in disbelief* confused

King Jedi
We better avoid each other then. Or this could get messy! laughing out loud

Texas
Ohhh King Jedi, I could of forgiven you for not liking Total Recall and Pulp Fiction and Titanic, but The Matrix!????? Oh my stars, you though it was boaring? With all that action and kewl special effects, and never before seen camera techniques, and that babealicious fox Carrie Ann Moss? Oh my, I just dont understand confused *Goes off to polish Matrix DVD* big grin

LanceWindu
I can't wait till they come out with Matrix 2.

King Jedi
I saw the Matrix at the cinema and really liked it. But I liked it for what it was- a big dumb action film. It was boring in some places but enjoyable enough.

Then I heard someone say that it was the best movie ever made. I laughed.

Then someone said that the movie changed their lives and I thought "oh well, if you say so". (read amazon reveiws for comments like that).

But then someone said that it was the most original film ever made and since then I've grown to hate it. Even though I love sci-fi.

The stroy and characters are a complete rip-off, of "Dark City" and "Brazil".

The style is stolen straight from early Jon Woo and Manga films.

The script is one of the most cheesy and cliched I've ever read and the cast is second rate.

And the effects had been done before in Japan. Mainly for T.V ads. Because the west hadn't seen it before everyone assumed that it was the first time it had ever been done.

And are the effects really that good? They weren't as spectacular as everyone made out. I'm a bit fed up of seeing "cool gun fights". Give us something new!

finti
the films I dont want to see
1.Titanic
2.Matrix
3.Dick Tracy
4.Breathless
5.Four weddings and a funeral(make thet all Hugh Grant movies including Bridget Jones).

King Jedi
laughing out loud So I'm not alone then!

I would add Hugh Grants films to my list as well.

But I quite liked Dick Tracy. I loved seeing all those big serious actors make fools of themselves.

What is "Breathless"?

Texas
No one likes the Matrix? confused That's OK, I'm sure you'll love Matrix Reloaded big grin

King Jedi
With that title - I think not. smile
But I'm sure there are more people who like it than don't.

LanceWindu
I'm pretty sure they are going to have to redo the Matrix 2 because actress and singer Aaliyah died last night and she star's in Matrix 2 as Zee. The film probably doesn't want a dead actress starring in their movie.

King Jedi
I thought she hadn't filmed her scenes yet?

Oliver Reed died during Gladiator but they kept him in.

Texas
King Jedi is right Lance, she never got a chance to film her roll before she died. I would hate to be her replacement. I would feel weird, having to fill a dead persons shoes. King Jedi, I cannot believe you are judging a movie solely on it's title. *Shakes finger at King Jedi* Shame on you! big grin

King Jedi
I know. I should know better than that. but the title doesn't excite me one bit.

LanceWindu
I guess MTV was wrong. They said that she already filmed her scenes. She has also filmed a movie where she is the queen of the vampires. Do you think that they are going to put that movie in theaters or is it going to be locked away in a vault?

King Jedi
I would think that they'd release it.

FLIPMODE
My condolences goes out to Aaliyah's Family.

Yea i've heard 2 Reports that, Conflict each other. But then, I've heard that Matrix 2 has finished all shooting scenes months ago. So she may still be in the movie. Besides this is not the first time this has happened. More than Likely the film retains the actor who passed away, after all they did do the work.
Brandon Lee, Tupac. Only With them, they pretty much were the main characters, and it would be impossile to release the film, if they were taken out of the film. I believe they couls reshoot new scenes with the Character Zee, If they wanted to, But If it's allready done, they might leave it alone.

Also Im very upset with the Matrix Creators, for Kicking Actor Marcus Chong, off of the cast. He lived through Matrix 1, even Saved NEO's Life, and he's not in 2 OR 3?? That guy is a budding Superstar!!

5 Flims that I wont take to an island:

5-Jingle all the Way
4-Get Carter
3-Tomb Raider
2-Robin hood men in tights
1-Barton fink/Titanic

King Jedi
The American Sylvester Stallone version of Get Carter or the British Micheal Caine one?

What did that actor get kicked out of the Matrix for?

FLIPMODE
The Sly stone Version.

And as for "Tank" he was simply and arrogantly not included in the next 2 movies, AND is not even explained what happened to him. According to their attitude, he was just an expendable half asian, half African American character, who just happened to be aboard the (nebechanezzer?), who just happens to be apart of a FEW group of people, who just HAPPEN to learn the truth about their world, and who just HAPPEN to help SAVE the world. Nothing important. roll eyes (sarcastic)

For what it's worth, they should have just Killed him in the First Movie, like ALL other movies do, with un-important characters.
But no, it seems our friend Marcus Chong, was just a pawn for the script, filling in the gaps, for the heartless writers carelessness.

Basically it comes down to this: If Tank died, with his brother, who would have Lived to save Trinity? Who then lives to save Neo. Sure, it was thoughtfull of them to "fill" a hole in the story, by making Tank live, through "Cyphers" attacks, BUT from that point on, the creators should have realized that they've just developed an Important Character in the storyline. Shame on them, for not following up in the slightest bit, on the character, and Double shame on them for Ditching the actor who played him.

But Never the Less, I still do really Like "The Matrix-1", and nothing can Change that. It was a VERY complete movie, compared to others in the genre. But I will hold my excitement for it as a SERIES, as I will just wait and see if they can even, equal, (not top) the quality of the first Matrix, with good Story, and Action.

King Jedi
I don't like the Matrix but I'm pleased that sci-fi and fantasy is sort of taking over again. With Matrix, AOTC, LotR, POTA, Terminator 3, JP3 all coming out it's great.

FLIPMODE
My minds drawing a blank here, whats AOTC?

I bet it's something simple too...

King Jedi
Attack of the Clones. Star Wars2. big grin

leonglee
Films I definitely would not take with me on a desert island, that's a new one!

1) Scarface (The 80s one with Al Pacino, I think that must be the only bum film he has ever done)
2) Top Gun (Love the planes but hated everything else about this film. Looks like a Brylcream advert!)
3) Ace Ventura Pet Detective (I HATE Jim Carey)
4) Commando (Got to be Arnie's low point. Remember that scene where he is standing in the middle of the garden and hundreds of people are shooting at him but he walks out unscathed. He does however manage to pop quite a few bad guys in the process! Though I must have been 12 when the film came out I still couldn't stop laughing!)
5) Road trip (If I see another American High School teen flick I am going to scream!!!!)

I have just noticed that 3 of my 5 choices are from the 80s!!
That probably reflects my view that the 80s was a terrible decade for cinema and music. sad

King Jedi
I don't like any of your choices either but how can anyone HATE Jim Carrey?

leonglee
Jim Carrey is like a manic Jerry Lewis on Speed. I think he is really OTT and just not funny! Peter Sellers at the end of Dr Strangelove, now that is comedy! cool

King Jedi
Dumb and Dumber is probably my favourite Jim Carrey movie.
