I have been an avid Tolkein fan since I was about nine years old but I find I liked the original Tomb Raider much better than the LotR movies to date. Perhaps because the people producing LotR had such a great canvas to start with (Tolkein's books), I expected a much greater end product, but, if anything, aside from special effects, the LotR movies are extremely disappointing.
On the other hand, I did not expect much from a movie based on a computer game and so I was greatly impressed by the final product.

I agree...........Tomb Raider was a good adaptation.......could have been better still.

LoTR........I only watched the first one and was greatly disapointed. It was like a live action version of a Dungeons and Dragons game..........I can't get into this crap.

The first Lotr was boring...I only liked it because the ringwraiths were in alot of the scenes, the second one is much better even though it only has one ringwraith scene in it.

I liked both tomb raiders and LoTR's O_o I did get that empty " i want more " feeling from the LoTR movies though. Oh and Eowyn sucks.. she made 'the two towers' suck badly for me.. she was so useless as a character -_-)

FOTR was the whole story behind the saga........it was the best( i know its gonna be better than ROTK) made movie of the three......all u airheads out there who just like mindless action would never in a million years understand that.

If I ever made a movie.......it would be a horror movie. I wouldn't need all the money it took to make LoTR. I would make a movie for guys to take their dates too so they get scared and want to be held. I wouldn't make a movie like LoTR who's purpose is to occupy the time of those men who can't get dates or laid. "forget a pussy! you must have misread my post Fini..........

I was stating that the whole fantasy/mystical genre of movies is directed towards an akward audience......those people who like to play role playing games like Dungeons and Dragons....people who are generally thought of as nerds because they get so into fantasy works because they cannot attain a real relationship with people (well girls) outside of the fantasy realm. Lord of the Rings fits well into that genre. I did watch it.......it bored me to tears. I can't get into the whole Wizards and Elves type crap......some people can, good for you. My opinion still isn't changed. I think watching a man get ripped apart (hellraiser) is far cooler than anything an elf or wizard can do.

Theres no comparison.Marcos just says that he liked the books and expected a lot from the movie and in the end was disappointed. But from TR that he didnt expect anything he was surprised. At least thats what I got from his post.

I couldn't say between the two which I liked better. I assume your comparing the first movie from both series and if so I think tomb raider might have a slight edge. FOTR was good but like Satsujin said it did leave you wanting more which by all means is really what they wanted anyhow. I give the edge to Tomb Raider because it does a better job at standing alone as a good movie. FOTR needs TT and eventually ROTK to take it from good movie to great movie. By the way, that was a funny post Evil Dead I about spewed my soda reading that!

agreed. strange the title of this thread should be 'versus' indicating competition of sorts. I had low expectations for tomb raider and also felt that it came out great. I expected LoTR to be another screw up but was also surprised with its greatness. *slaps eowyn* you cant have aragorn!

When i read the title i thoughtjust that but after further thinking i can see why Marcus Black makes this copmraison. I think he believes that Tomb raider was done better than Lotr but still it made less money than LOTR. I agree on that. I enjoyed Lotr: FOTR but tomb raider was way better that any LOTR movie.

I agree big time!!! LoTR is my favourite movie and book and I think PJ did an amazing job with it so what if he left out some parts you can see it on the expanded version.

Hmm. While my personal preference is for Tomb Raider, I would have found LotR to be a much better series of movies if it hadn't been based on Tolkein's books. Since the latter movies were already provided with a great plot and only had to be adapted to the big screen, I would have expected much more from the script-writers and director. Therefore, I was greatly disappointed in the outcome.

As for Tomb Raider, the creators only had a silly video game for blueprint and yet turned out a highly entertaining movie.

Indeed, the "brilliant" defense, by fini, chica16 and hobbit-lover of the director have given me a better understanding of the type of people the director was apparently trying to attract. Never played D & D. I do, every now & then, read a new science-fiction or fantasy book or watch a movie of the genre, but I would agree that these are not typically the movies to which one would want to take a date.

There are various ways of escaping stress and there is nothing wrong with the occasional sci-fi or fantasy as long as it isn't one's only source of stress relief and one realizes it is merely so much fiction.

Don't worry.......Sci-fi movies/books are geared towards the male demographic. Nothing wrong with that at all. Sci-Fi is made primarily for the male audience. Lord of the Rings on the other hand is Mystical/Fantasy. It is for those really nerdy people who like dungeons and dragons of women. This is why women love that show "Charmed" so much...........the whole mystical/fantasy element.

Yeah, you're right, i mean when i saw it in the movie theater, i hadn't read the books and neither had one of my friends that i went with and we were like clutching each other the entire time because we were so freaked out! My other friend was just like.... yea... w/e.... i still found it enjoyable, but ttt is the best so far, but i know that return of the king will be THE BEST.... anyway, not a big of angelina jolie, no offense... so yeah LOTR all the way.

I'm not a big Angelina Jolie fan either...........I am however a huge fan of the way her titties look in tight shirts.

LOTR is a good movie, but I think they dont create enough new scenes..... A new history could be better.... With some new characters......
TR is a little better because it was a "new" story and they really take the time to put an introduction on Lara. Its not everyboby who knew her.

Nobody is comparing Tomb Raider is just used has an example. Its not easy making a movie out of a video game. Theres not much there. Plus it keeps being compared to Indy and Bond which is what it is

It's not that there isn't a lot to work with if people make a movie from a video game. With TOmb raider ypou can do anything. Mythical stories, folklore or even silly urban legends. And i think they did a better job with tomb raider than with LOTR. LOTR was very badky adapted but i understand why. LOTR is unbelievably complicated. Sure i loved all of them but a lot was left out. I know this would sound silly and EXPENSIVE but it should have ben six movies. Every book exists out of two books. (the copies i read were that way) When you compare TR vs. LOTR you could say they were both done just as bad or just as good. In th e end i loved them both.

We do talk about the movies but the idea of the threads isnt to compare the 2 movies, despite the title.

No matter what story they tell Lara Croft is the focus. Theres nobody else. Sure there are other actors but Croft is the only main character.Thats dificult.

Ugh...I can't believe you would even try and compare the two. Although Tomb Raider was well done, and I liked it a lot, it doesn't have ANYTHING on LOTR. LOTR is everything you want in a movie - adventure, fighting, cool weapons, romance, etc. The special effects were incredibly well but not over - done (come on - Gollum was pure genius. GENIUS!!!) like some other movies that won't be mentioned (*coughMATRIX RELOADEDcoughSTAR WARS I and IIcough*).

Honestly, LOTR was frickin' AWESOME. Even though it cut out a LOT of stuff (and added a lot of stuff in The Two Towers) from the books, they are awesome movies APART from the books (as in, even if I had never read the books, I would still love the movies). Aah! I could go on about it all day.

I don't think it should have been 6 movies, mainly because first of all, no studio would fund a project like that, and second, as much as I love the books, they do drag in places, especially in Book I. And why would anyone go and see the rest if they thought the very first movie was boring?

Coming back to the original topic, though I liked Tomb Raider a lot, I would pick LOTR over it ANY day.

tomb raider and tomb raider 2 was brilliant. i loved them both and angelina joely did a great job..... i think anyway.
