Panaka

King Jedi
Does anyone know if he is returning?

UnknownBountyHunter
I think this was discussed before. I have heard rumors that he wouldn't return. Someone states this was because he wanted to view the script firsthand, and never got the chance.

Xizor
I hope he comes back. Hugh Quarshie was the perfect example of a casting success. He was a virtual unknown who gave a good performance in developing Panaka. Who became one of my favorite characters in TPM.

King Jedi
I agree with you that he was great. He is also a Star Wars fan and turned down the part of Othello on London stage to appear in EP1,so if he does quit it must be for a good reason.

UnknownBountyHunter
Turned down Othello? Who's part was he wanted for?

King Jedi
I,m not sure what part it was.

The Maker
This character will not be returning.

Xizor
How do you know this? I heard he was coming back but it was questionable if Hugh was. Give us some evidence to back up your one liners.

UnknownBountyHunter
Xizor is partially correct, we don't know if:
1)Hugh Quarishie is coming back
2)Panaka is coming back
Both, especially the latter, are possible. Panaka has been rumored to return but Hugh is questionable, its doubtful he will because he demanded to see the script and GL didn't have it done, therefore I think he denied casting.

King Jedi
Having other actors play TPM characters is a bad idea apart from Anakin. If Hugh Quarshie doesn't return then they should ditch that character.

Xizor
I agree with that approach.

UnknownBountyHunter
I must agree but still they probably will find some similarly looking character and use him as Panaka.

DARTH SERIOUS
i hope he doesn'T RETURN. I THINK HE WAS THE TRAITOR IN TPM. if you notice every time our heros plan a strategy within earshot of panaka ...instantly darth sidiuos knows . watch the movie to see what i mean.and also panaka is always pessimistic and saying we cant win or their army is too big . i think he sees the coming of the empire and decides to go with the winning side!

UnknownBountyHunter
I agree with the pessimistic outlook, but uh...about being a traitor, smell a goat's foot.

Darth Daft
I've smelt a goat's foot before. Reminded me of summer...
Anyway, Panaka, yes. Well basically, the reason he is against everything the good guys say is because his name is Captain Panaka and so he has to Panic.
"Panaka" and "Panic." Get it? Heh heh.....
Funny ain't I.

(Groan)
(Long heavy sigh)
(Get off the stage!)

King Jedi
I watched the Highlander film on T.V last night and Hugh Quarshie is in it. I think he got killed but I missed that part.

Darth Daft
My grandfather was a highlander.....but he died.

King Jedi
Where was he from?

Dim
Are we going to start showing off tartans? smile

Darth Daft
My grandfather was from Naboo, but he moved to Coruscant after his father's industry had an economic boom.

Dim
laughing out loud Really? wow..

Darth Daft
You think that's cool? My uncle Bill was a clone of Boba Fett.

King Jedi
Well I started the Loch Ness monster story. And Bigfoot, and the Yhetti and we better get this back on subject quickly.smile

Darth Daft
Okay, well all I gotta say is that Panaka ain't returning. Full stop.

Dim
...and that doesn't bother me at all.

Darth Daft
Me neither. He wasn't a great character anyway. The rest of the saga can continue easily without him.

King Jedi
I thought he was a good character but Hugh Quarshie looked at the camera twice in TPM and it really annoys me!!!!

Darth Daft
Heh heh, where abouts was that?

Dim
No!...don't tell or I'll always see it!

Darth Daft
I'll have to find it myself. I know what you mean though. Sometimes he is facing away from the camera, but his eyes move around to look at it.

Jedimaster3838
I am personally glad that Panak will not be returning, he was a "nothing" character. While he did not hurt the movie I don't think his character served any real purpose. And he sort of annoyed me, he seemed like he was against the Jedi for some reason......maybe it will be explained, or maybe I am reading to much into it

Darth Daft
I see what you mean. He always seems grumpy and pessimistic about everything. And I agree that he doesn't seem to like Jedi. There hasn't really been much info on him in any source books. I wonder if there's something important we don't we don't know about him.

King Jedi
If you were head of the Queens gaurds and two Jedi showed up telling you what to do and where to go I don't think anyone would be too pleased.

Darth Daft
Good point, I guess he's just used to taking responsibility of the safety of Amidala and doesn't like it when someone else takes over.

Gundark
I thought Panaka was too stiff throughout most of the movie. After they escaped from Naboo and they were thanking r2 (which I thought that whole scene was ridiculous) the queen says "what is its number?" Panaka kind of looks at r2, briefly touches his dome, then says, real stiff like, "r2d2, your highness." It was like out of a bad elementary school play. Then on Tatooine when they're heading into Mos Espa and the queen wants to go along, Panaka is like, "she's curious about the planet." The work planet comes out like pancake. Totally flat. This guy stinks and I don't want him back.

King Jedi
I think you are being a bit harsh on him. He is a good actor it's just that Lucas can't write good dialogue. Lucas can come up with the most amazing lines which people remember all their lives but when it comes to the simple stuff it's as if he just gets bored and writes anything down.
Did anyone from the U.K see Quarshie in The Stephen Lawrence Story? He was fantastic and won a lot of awards so I don't think it is his acting that's the problem.

Darth Daft
I didn't see that, KJ. I think the same goes for Jake Lloyd in some ways. A lot of people thought Anakin was annoying in TPM and so was Lloyd, but I don't even think it was his fault. Like you said, it was Lucas' script that spoilt the character slightly with lines like, "Yipee!" and "Now THIS is podracing!"

Gundark
Well, you guys do have a point regarding the dialogue. I remember reading in the making of "Empire", Ford tells Lucas that "you can write this stuff but you sure can't say it".

Darth Daft
"I sense a disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were then silenced."

Ben Kenobi, A New Hope.

Does anyone agree that that is one of the most corny lines in the saga?

King Jedi
I love that line. It's one of the amazing lines I was talking about. I hate lines like "we'll be sitting ducks".

Darth Daft
Yeah Panaka again with his annoying dialogue. I don't like the way that is a phrase used in the real world and then put into Star Wars.

Gundark
You're right, DD. There are no ducks in Star Wars. Wampas, Banthas, Jawas and Wookies, but no ducks ! Maybe he could have said we'll be sitting GUNDARKS!!!

King Jedi
There are ducks in Star Wars. In TPM when the Gungan sub comes out of the water some ducks fly away. I read about Hugh Qaurshie a few days ago and it said he was filming another movie whilst Ep2 was being filmed.

Ratcat
Actually I thought they were Canadian Geese.

Panaka is outta there. He's been replaced by Captain Typho.

Dim
Which is just fine with me considering Panaka was about as interesting as a piece of lint...and I'm talking about the blue denium kind...not the multi colored stuff...

Ratcat
Where do you get that stuff from? The sarcasm, not the linbt. laughing out loud

Dim
What?...is it too over the top?..

I guess I get it from the prima donna act that Quashie pulled..it rubbed me the wrong way...and his character really was as interesting as a piece of lint stick out tongue

Ratcat
Well, such a talent the LFL could afford to loose him... NOT! His resume is actually very unimpressive.

King Jedi
Ratcat I don't know what Canadian Geese look like but I'm pretty sure that the animals in TPM go "Quack,Quack".

Ratcat
http://www.gpnc.org/_derived/canada.htm_txt_geese.gif

These are Canada Geese and they go "Honk, Honk". The birds that fly off when the sub emerges at Theed seem to have long necks to me.

Darth Daft
They looked like chicken to me. Yum. laughing out loud

Dim
But the ones in TPM were white...I think they were swans..

queeq
Swans and geese in SW? They were neither, I think they were the Naboo joizculkhbewkjhakfhkcnba, ndoiuuuueri and they like hanging around at waterfalls.

queeq out

Darth Daft
Yeah they're bound to have a name in some source. I checked the Insider's Guide, but couldn't find anything.

Gundark
queeq, I believe you misspelled that. It should have been mistacalafragilisticexpealadochis.

DD, if you start that chicken thing again, I'll be forced to join you and EJ will have our heads on the chopping block. smokin'

Comment on topic..the novel says nothing about the birds, although they did appear to have somewhat longer necks than your average duck. I have no doubt we'll run this right up to 100 posts before we ever confirm the identity of these creatures. rolling on floor laughing

Dim
Hey, there can be swans in SW...I'm going with my swan theory...so you guys can call them klhdfkdsjflksjdlfkj if you want to...but to me they'll always be swans big grin

Darth Daft
There can be many normal animals in Star Wars. In TESB there are loads of snakes and lizards on Dagobah and in a source book I read that Luke used to own a dog before ANH. Can't wait for an elephant to appear in Episode 2.

Ratcat
Just to fuel the duck/chicken/goose theory.

There are, apparently, many different species of Cananda Goose, I just posted a picture of one kind. There are loads of sites about them and YES there are some that are a lot paler in colour than the ones pictured.

As for Chickens, well I personally love a good Chicken Korma, near where I live is a curry house that does an award winning Korma.

Roast chicken with sage and onion stuffing and pork sausage meat, yum!

Stuffed chicken breasts, chicken pasta salad, chicken sub, yes I sure love chicken.

Turkey is just as nice though it has a slightly different flavour. With Christams coming as well!!!

Once again with sage and onion stuffing and pork sausage meat. Roast potatoes (maybe from Idaho!!), carrots, brussel sprouts, and green beans.

Yumm, yumm. But then back to those chickens... OK, maybe later............

Darth Daft
I think Ratcat likes chicken almost as much as I do...

On page 9 of the "Inside the Worlds of Episode 1" book there is a clear picture of the birds at the river. It is clear that they are not geese or swans. They do in fact look a lot like pelicans. Have a look if you own that book.

Dim
Pelicans?...how boring..

Ratcat
Yeah, they don't make such nice crispy balls with sweet and sour sauce.

Darth Daft
Hmmmm....I dunno. Never tried pelican before. I saw about 2 of them when I went to Florida a few years ago and that's the only time I've ever seen a pelican right in front of me. Hey, has anyone ever tried eating ostrich before? YUCK. Too tough and gritty for me.

Ratcat
Do they still sell Kangaroo steaks in Asda?

Darth Daft
No idea, but you should try the platypus kebab. YUM.

Dim
sick

I've a buffalo, that's about as exotic as I get on the meat front..

Has anyone ever had Rocky Mountain Oysters?

Jedi Mercenary
see this is what happens when you get a topic with posts over 40, people trail off and talk about something else, like eating endangered animals

Ratcat
Dim,

I did have it once, but the doctor gave me some
penicillin and in cleared it up in not time. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/
