LOTR hands down

billyboyd4ever
LOTR!!! there is no comparison...

Puppet Of Doom
Harry Potter! LOTR is better made and cooler, but the HP stories and charatcres etc blah blah blah are just too cool!!!
HARRY POTTER FOREVER!!!

But still, yay for Lord of the Rings being made here and woot for Peter Jackson.
OK, I like the both. I'll shut up now...

Switch13
HP books are good but movies suck LOTR books are great movies RULE
LOTR wins no competition big grin

JackSparrowLuvr
no doubt LOTR

Lord Soth
While I love the Harry Potter books, the movies absolutely suck. W/out question, LotR is the better of the two. I'll give one of the detailed breakdowns for which I'm famous(big grin) when I have more time

movie_freak
LOTR rock

CaptainInsano2
Why is this even a topic, of course LOTR is the winner. Harry Potter is a little kid movie while they have college classes on Tolkien's books. J.K. Rowling should just go back to her mansion and play with her elephants.

vvvrulz
lol. Yeah lotr all the way. Harry Potter is just the book all over again on a screen. Whereas lotr recreates the atmosphere presented in the book, and stands up as a movie on its own. HP pales to compare.

alic88
they r both boring. but hp sucks a bit 2 much. so LOTR it is

Lord Soth
Kay, here it is, the breakdown....

Who likes it
1. Harry Potter is liked by young children and teenage girls w/crushes on Daniel Radcliffe/Tom Felton/etc, etc.

2. Lord of the Rings is liked by pretty much everybody, except small children, fantasy-haters, and the dead. And I bet even the dead like it.

Why they're good
1. Harry Potter(HP) is based on a brilliant book series which has made the author richer than the Queen of England. It has heart, compelling characters, and witty British dialogue.

2. Lord of the Rings(LotR) is also based on a single book broken into three parts; a story that has captured the hearts of millions of Americans and more besides. The movies carry A-List actors, brilliant action sequences, a moving score, genius renderings of landscapes, flawless visual effects , and so much more unmentioned.

Why they're bad
1. HP, while they're good on their own, are rather pathetic and meager compared to the books. One can not help but compare the two (book and movie), and feel disappointed. They leave too much out from the books, the acting is wooden, the visual effects unspectacular and quite obvious at times.

2. LotR has far too many characters to keep track of (and more are added in RotK), and the dialogue is sluggish, even soporific, at times. The book to movie content is often so different that core fans are disappointed.

My feelings
1. LotR is far superior to HP. LotR is directed at a far larger audience, while HP only tries to attract young children who have not yet read the books, and therefore won't hate the movie, and teenage girls who don't really care b/c the guys are so d**n cute.

2. W/ some luck, HP will be better with Alfonso Cuaron helming The Prisoner of Azkaban. We can only hope

Lord Soth
~whew~ That was exhausting.....

aniron
hmmm well lets think shall we:
1= Lord of the rings are number one for the BBC big read
2=the Movies so far have beaten the hp records even though the hp crew have placed the times it comes out differently from lord of the rings ever since the fellowship beat it's numbers and because lotr is great hp isn't coming out until next year ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

basically lotr rocks.

BingaBonga
okay, how many threads like this have we had? Oh well, i think that everyone knows the clear winner of this, do i even have to say it? for the people that don't get it... lotr... it's been around longer, it's more detailed, and truthfully i think that j k rowling got some of her ideas from lotr, once again lotr, no question about it.

enya
hp books are really good but the movies couldnt get much worse wheras

lotrs film iz an epic adventure and basically kicks ass
as for the books they are classics and so much more detailled

enya
THEREFORE

enya
LOTRs beats Harry Potter by miles and miles its so far ahead you cant even c it

end of topic

vvvrulz
Nice breakdown Lord Soth. big grin

LindsIsTightK
I'm a Harry Potter fan all the way, but I don't think that these movies should be compared so much because each of them is trying to reach an entirely different fan base.

Harry Potter is for the younger generation whereas LotR is for the older generation.

Lord Soth
Thanx. I hope sometime soon it'll become a trademark of mine big grin

Discos
I voted for LOTR, I have seen the first Harry Potter 2 times and the second film once, I have been meaning to watch them both again for some reason.

Lord Soth
I for one think they're pretty bad

Hegemon875
LOTR is older than the ages of all Harry Potter fans put together laughing

Besides, you didn't say anything that deserved flaming anyway.

BOPRecruit 16
i prefer lotr over hp b/c lotr gives more history and has more originality than hp. plus, hp is so limited to a young audience. rowling should make a version for teens and one for kids.

BackFire
I've never seen a HP movie, and I don't plan too

Puppet Of Doom
I must say, the Harry Potter books are SO MUCH better than the films, I was vaguely disappointed but still...I love 'em.
OH and by the way, Harry Potter is not recommended by the author for anyone under the age of 8, it is actually very disturbing in some parts especially in Book 5 (order of the phoenix). It was never for kids in the first place though it seems like it, the way the media has made it. That sucks heaps. The movies are childish but the books are not!!

The Lord of the Rings book was THE BORINGEST book I have EVER READ, after three pages I was completely at sea. I love the movies, though u have to see them a couple of times to get whats going on... and they are very very long. It's weird watching them and being a New Zealander coz ur all like, "hey that's the southern alps!" and "thats the remarkables".

OMG I saw one of the sets for Lord of the Rings before the fellowship came out. Kewl huh?

LOTR has seduced every audience it's ever had and has us all now holding our breath until the next movie, and you know it! its actors, its special effects, the kickass accents...do you honestly think HP could hold a candle to them?

Lord Soth
Amen, leaf

BOPRecruit 16
the hp movies need help from american movie studios and so forth.

bLooMiLiCioUs
big grinbig grinbig grin

leaf_eater
maybe they have a low budget or something...they need help. yeah

Lord Soth
It was the acting, the direction, and the book-to-movie transistion. They took out too much (Peeves comes to mind)

there both entertaining, but harry potter is more fun

lol this thread AGAIN?!?!?!?!

Circe
I love nothing in my life more than Harry Potter. It's changed my life and made me a much more interesting and better person. The books are the greatest in the world.

But on a cinematic look, the Lord of the Rings movies are by far twice as good, no arguments. They are so powerful and...I can't explain it well, but they have extreme dedication in them (not that HP doesn't, but...) Lord of the Rings will be the ones looked back upon as great achievments in movie making, not Harry Potter. The greatest thing about Harry Potter is the books by the amazing JK Rowling.

bLooMiLiCioUs
i agree 100%

BingaBonga
yup yes

Ariadne
If you're looking at the books, there's no way I could ever choose. They're both great, and I hate people who only obsess about one thing. But with the movies, I love the LotR and don't really care about HP. That is all I have to say.

BOPRecruit 16
no more poles and comparing lotr and hp please! enough!

Caribbean_Chick
I agree LOTR is better.. although I enjoy the HP books more then the LOTR books

Lord Soth
^agree

Caribbean_Chick
my opinion is that because LOTR books are so much more complicated so unlike a movie there is much more explaining to be done then in the HP books

yaoislasher777
Hey i'm a newbie but my vote counts right?
I think LOTR and HP should be equal!!
But dont mind the slashers, were just in it 4 the mansex!

VengeanceGOD
I'm amused that someone even ASKED this question. LOTR is obviously a better series overall. The Harry Potter books ARE, however, very very good and only slightly less than LOTR. It's the Harry Potter MOVIES that ruin it. God those are crap.

Lord Soth
^100% agree. Harry Potter movies suck suck suck suck

KayeLa
although i enjoyed all of the HP books, LOTR's movies are much better than HP movies...

Lord Soth
Refer to above...big grin

BOPRecruit 16
i guess lotr has more of a presense since it's been around longer and has more fans in different age ranges.

Veralidaine
definitely lotr! dat totally kiks hp'z ass!
also, da characters r way beta....lyk lotr aint all witches n wizards, theres all different races which makes it really interestin, plus da lotr guys r so sexy *drools*

Lord Soth
is it just me, or are you a very bad typist?

bLooMiLiCioUs
laughing

badkittykitty
lotr defiantly

BOPRecruit 16
the wizards back in middle earth time can battle extremely well physically and with swords better than the one's in harry potter. that's what i find lame in harry potter, they can't do hand to hand combat.

Lord Soth
The only thing is, in Middle-Earth, there are only 3 wizards (Saruman the White, Gandalf the Gray/White, and Radaghast the Brown). Not that it makes much of a difference. All they need to do is rally a band of elves, and that'll be more than you can shake a stick (or wand big grin) at

Snuffles
Harry Potter has good books but suckie movies...
LOTR has good movies but hard-to-understand books...
ZACH

muse5
LOTR... hands down, i was originally a HP fan but after i read lotr i was like wow, i like this SOOO much better

Darth Revan
LOTR x10,000,000,000

Just plain all around better... LOTR appeals to all audiences, young and old alike, and the movies are incredibly well done--they don't scrap too much of the plot of the books, but are still easy to follow.

This topic just made me realize something... I think JK Rowling got the idea to kill Sirius from LOTR--Boromir and Theoden's deaths were a gut-wrenching, however effective, (and you could say even necessary) part of the story. Boromir's death showed the sheer power of the ring to corrupt even the strongest of men. Theoden... Well I'm not sure why he had to die... But the story wouldn't be the same w/o it big grin I think she was trying to do the same thing.. Only she didn't. I'm tempted to not read the next HP book.

the lord of the rings movies kick harry potters ass

Lord Soth
The Harry Potter movies are terrible. The third looks okay, though

Ice18
Lord of the rings takes it with flying colors because there is a whole lot more of action in LOTR then in HP Happy Dance

Lady Ellie
Come on, People, isn't it obvious... I mean, Lotr doesn't get 11 oscars for nothing... thumb up

Lord Soth
Action doesn't make a movie. Story, and plot, and emotion make a movie. Both movies are based on best-selling books. Why is Lord of the Rings better? B/c they decided to actually keep the soul of the story in the movie. With Harry Potter, the soul was ripped out and burned in the fires of commercialism mad

turkesa
Like Lady Ellie had already said... Totr trilogy don't get more than 11 Oscars for nothing!!
Tlotr are obviously much, but much better than Harry Potter! smile

Kisses!!! Happy Dance

LOTR LOTR LOTR LOTR!!!!!

Evy_O
Can't choose messed But if I HAD to.... LotR.

MarkHobin
LORD OF THE RINGS BY FAR,i havnt reasd the books of lotr, but i have seen the movies and there outstanding.
In my opinion HP is a kids version of LOTR.They have similar characters to LOTR.

ilvorlandobloom
lotr is kickin hp's ass!

SmashPunker911
How am i supposed to choose LOTR over HP?!?!?! AAAAHHH! i'm screwing my bRaIn!!! messed

punkyhermy
people listen!
i don't think u can compare the two!!!!!
harry potter is a tale about modern england, LOTR is about ancient england, there is nnnoo way they have similarities....harry potter is about studen'ts and school life mainly, LOTR is about a quest, an adventure...the ONLY resemblance is that both have magic in it....

The Force
harry potter sux!!! stick out tongue

Drifter101
Well i am pretty sure that there are thousands of threads like this in either harry potter forums and Lord of the Rings forums, and of course in the forum its in is the movie that will win thats why it must be here that we ask which franchise is better The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?

ragesRemorse
LOTR has better story, better conflict, better action, better emotions, just better everything. Now talking about the way it was filmed, lotr has better sets, special effects, better actors, better dialogue, better metaphors, and better everything else.

However , like drifter said, there is no way you can compare the two, even though they are both fantasy, they are two different types of movies. If you are going to compare them though, lord of the rings wins

Spike Eccles
admittedly, both are tremendously imaginative fantasies from brilliant books, but i think LOTR just shades it. Apart from the sheer scale and depth of character in Middle Earth, there is the tremendous direction of Peter Jackson and, a rare thing in modern action cinema, decent acting from the likes of Mortensen, McKellan, Wood Jnr and especially Austin as poor samwise Gangee. H potter is just as entertaining, but the action is confined just to Hogwarts and the characters, although many and varied, just dont have the depth that Tolkien's characters have. Basically, if DVD copies of Prisoner of Azkaban and ROTK Extended DVD came out on the same day, and i only had the money to buy one of them, i would buy the final part of LOTR....then save for the harry Potter! lol

lotr - 10/10
Star Wars 9/10 (minus 1 point for the boring prequels)
Hp - 9/10
X-men - 8/ 10
The Matrix - 4/10 (and that's being generous!)

jjdude00
K im a HUGE lotr nerd and i thought that everyone knew that hp could not even COMPETE with lotr! mad and now this! im getting sick! sick but this is probably not going to get anyones attention so heres a distraction

Ya OK your cons about lotr are stupid!
too many characters??? I and most people like the fact that the are so many characters because most have back stories which makes it fun and easy to pick a favorite. for instance... my fav character is faramir and he has a big backstory.
if faramir where in written by jk rowling then he would have a tiny backstory if any at all! thats why jrr toilkens books and peter jacksons movie are the BEST

maham
I've followed and praised both fandoms for some time, but Harry Potter would be my only love. The HP films weren't anything comparable to the LOTR ones, but the story draws me more especially because it has my childhood associated with it.

omgchos
Movie wise HP can go eff itself. Lotr had its faults but delivered story wise. The Hp movies were garbage past the 2nd one.

They completely ****ed up faramirs story in the LOTR movies. COMPLETELY.

They actually didnt cut anything out in that case. If anything they super padded it. In the books he knew exactly what to do right away and never took them to osgiliath.

Faramir quote "But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo"

And then the whole daddy issues thing which made no sense. In the books Denethor was pissed at faramir not because of some favorite sybling thing or over the loss of boromir. It was because he told his dad he had let the ring go. Denethor thought it as boromir did that it was better to have it in minas tirith. Then faramir is wounded saving the retreating osgiliath forces not on some stupid denethor suicide mission to take osgiliath. Thats when denethor goes mad and thw hole burning thing happens. The way peter jackson wrote it made no sense.
