Alec Cawthorne
Saving Private Ryan - even though i dislike the film as a whole, th eopening sequences featuring the beach landings are incredible. Today i think there is only Spielberg who could have achieved that.

Scream - the Drew Barrymore opening is brilliant ( even if it is a rip off of an earlier horror film ) Scary, funny..it's the best part of all the Scream films.

Bad Boy
Bad Boys!!!

Wesley Snipes, Passenger 57, now give me your mother****ing hangdywipes!

Kella
I must say I favored all three LOTR movie openings. They all told an important part of the story that would have not fit anywhere else in the films.

Myth
Um, there is already one of these.

Woody Woods
umm..is the opening credits of Spider Man 2 considered the start?

if so..than its the one.

Drac39
Van Helsing Impressive homage to B&W 1930's/1940's horror

nail_bunny
Spiderman 2.....I love to look at the artwork.

forumcrew
spiderman 2.. you must be paid to honestly say this.. van helsing did have use an interesting start (then it all went down hill).. Bond movies all have good intros

nail_bunny
nope, I wasent paid. I just love to look at the artwork at the begining

Woody Woods
^ yup^ i wish i had a sig with the art work....

Joseph_Kerr
Star Wars: A New Hope. Who can forget seeing the Tantive IV screaming across the screen followed by the Devastator.. still following... still following.. still following.. how big is this ship anyways.. it's huge (so said my 7 year old mind in 1977).

WindDancer
There are quite a lot. I think I'll go with Dead or Alive this time. Great opening! Strange ending.

TheFilmProphet
Thats the best for me so far aswell. Spider-Man 2 is the film of the year!

Cinemaddiction
Agreed.

Mine lie mainly in Horror movies:

Jaws
Dawn of the Dead - Frantic scrambling in the news station.
Halloween
Ghost Ship - Who knew 1 wire could do so much damage? evil face

Drac39
Yeah, the murder of Michael's sister, and the hospital, Plesance steals that scene big grin

Aini
ghost ship

Jedi Priestess
Yep...as much as I love Star Wars I gotta go with JAWS......I wouldnt get in the lake for a year after that! LOL

Drac39
Jaws had a great beginning, forgot all about it...

mook
and it was a clever way of reminding people what happened in the first one.

For Your Eyes Only. It was nice to see the Blofeld bit resolved... but of course now I miss having him around in the Bond series.

ragesRemorse
Raiders of the lst ark

Indiana jones and the last crusade

brotherhood of the wolf

Gladiator

just to name a few

SlipknoT
The Dawn of the Dead remake had a pretty good opening sequence.

roundisfunny
Goodfellas & Pulp Fiction, if for no other reason than they haven't been mentioned yet.

Jeff-Man
The Matrix

finti
easy the floating scripture in Star Wars later to be known as Episode IV A New Hope

slinger
All I can think of right now is Hard Boiled and Blade.

nick1811
brotherhood of the wolf opening was really cool

Bierbommetje
Kill Bill

I jumped outta my seat first time I saw it

MF D00m

YEah~~!

I opening sequence in Spiderman 1 and 2 i think are great. And Ghost Ship! not a great movie overall, but intersting concept, and the opening sequence was just awesome.

figo obsessed
"something's gotta give" when we see few women who are very young and very very nice. Scene with hend-picked music smile

SnakeEyes
WEll the Two Towers had an awesome opening, Gandalf and the Balgrog fighting. As did X2, where Nightcrawler fought in the white house. Star Wars was always an excellent one. Gladiator and that opening battle was awesome as well.

cgtuna21
Saving Private Ryan is by far the best!! But here are some pretty close ones

All Lord of the Rings films
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Once upon a time in the West
All Old Star Wars films
Jaws
Apocalypse Now Redux

D-Double
I'll go with Star Wars: New Hope just for the classics. But for a more obscure one, check out National Lampoon's European Vacation. When Chevy Chase and family are on the "Pig in a Poke" game show in the pig costumes. The freaky, horny game show host kills me. I'm on the floor, I tell ya. stick out tongue

cal31
ANH or Matrix.

ladygrim
i'd go wit star wars to but i'm not sure which one tho...

deadly_force
ghost ship did have a good opening sequence but then it went downhill IMO. but saving privite ryan has got to be the best IMO

Cinemania
X-Men 2, Spiderman 2 and Swordfish eek!

eggmayo
private ryan
ghost ship
gladiator
bowling for columbine - i just found it so indictitive that he could get a free gun in a bank

Drumdude1167
Pulp fiction, with the honey bunnie, and then the music comes in with "pulp fiction" then the credits roll

Mr Zero
Inasmuch as I could quote several classy art movies and a few old classic B&W intros - Its STAR WARS all the way... For the way it BOOMS! onto the screen with that JW music, for the scrolling text, for the never-ending overhead shot that made me TURN AROUND in my seat and look over my shoulder to see how much more was behind me (HA!)

But mostly - i think - for taking everything you knew about sci-fi and booting your expectations out the window with that one phrase...

"A long time ago..."

Magic.

TheFilmProphet
I think Die Another Day also had a great opening sequence.

Kaleanae
ET

RaventheOnly
Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring big grin

ummmm action wise i say James Bond flicks big grin

TheFilmProphet
Yeah many of the best ones there.

Red Superfly
The best James Bond opening has to be Goldeneye - the damn scene and then the bit with the nosediving plane is awesome.

However, Star Wars gets my vote. NOTHING can beat that.

It's like BANG! Instant action!

MildPossession
I love the opening to Twins Effect before the title appears. Two vampire slayers fighting cheesy European vampires in an above ground train station, some good action scenes and the music is nice to listen to.

Mr Zero
10 mins ago I'd never even heard of this - And now it's on order !

MildPossession
I think you will despise it for some reason. There is a sequel as well. Have them both on dvd lol.

I got the first one because I heard one of my favourite actresses was in it, Karen Mok, it's just a small cameo though sad

A lot of people hated the Twins Effect movies, but I loved them. So bla to them.

Mr Zero
You kidding? It looks like a hoot.

MildPossession
I hope you think that when you watch it smile

deadly_force
i like the opening sequence in swordfish i read it was the most complicated visual effect in Warner Brothers history

Igon Flombaigne
Probably the opening to Raging Bull.

Esau Cairn
Cliffhanger...when Stallone's trying to save the woman from losing her grip & falling.

The rest of the movie was ok but that opening sequence was truly dramatic in every sense of the word.

siriuswriter
Chris Nolan knows how to deliver openings - The Prestige, Inception, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight both had the best openings.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre actually wins my most atmospheric opening.

I actually like X-Men 1's opening better, with Magneto as a kid in the holocaust.

Swordfish comes to mind as potentially my favorite opening. Inglorious Basterds is right up there as well.

I do love that scene, at least when it's not dubbed in Spanish. Reservoir Dogs probably has my favorite though, Mr. Pink is such a boss.

The Magneto opening was just way more gritty and emotional. Nightcrawlers opening was cool too, but it doesn't sum up the discrimination and hate that is the theme of the movies like X-men 1 does.

steverules_2
Jurassic Park - Seeing the raptor eye was cool

all it showed was a young magneto crying & bending a fence. no expression

Actually I liked that opening scene...it was like he was being ripped away from his parents, X-Men first class shows how truly pissed off he was. And it wasn't just him bending a fence...well ok he did bend a fence but it was also the birth of his mutant powers.

0mega Spawn
still doesn't hold a candle to X2 opening...

ares834
I agree with those saying X-men's opening was better than X2.

Anyway my favorite is a toss up between A New Hope or Inglourious Basteards.

0mega Spawn
dI7SEIKaKwE

are we talking about the same scene?

Howls moving castle is beautiful

aanthonyfranks
Terminator.

Terminator 2, one of the most overrated movies of all time. It has all the great things you expect and the special effects were definitely early.

Dude if you think Nightcrawler rushing through the White House is the ultimate idea behind what makes the cut for "best film intro" then that's your call.

I prefer deeper inspiration. The intro to Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre was simply perfect. Pulp Fiction's criminal couple G'ing themselves up to rob a diner was also perfect.

The intro to Terminator 2 exuded ultimate cool. Much more heavy hitting than X2. Actually when I think of the beginning of the original Terminator I rate it better.

mplo
In the film West Side Story: The aerial shots of New York City's West Side, which gradually zero in on the finger-snapping Jets on the school playground.

In The Town, as much as I disliked this film as a whole: The aerial shots of Charlestown, MA( which The Town is short for).

Manofwords
Antichrist.... a breathtaking opening, beautifully shot, staged... stunning.

Shame the rest of the film couldn't match it.

cpa_parkcity
James Bond Casino Royale.

Jedireaper
Best movie opening for me was Lethal Weapon 4; where Riggs and Murtaugh have an entire conversation about becoming a father and grandfather while some mad man shoots their car and stuff to pieces. Then the car is crushed by the tanker and Murtaugh ends up (almost) naked.

Myth
I think Drive just entered into this conversation.
