If you remembered when Private Pyle ( the fat slob soldier) was asleep, what was it with the other soldiers pounding at Pyle's gut with soap and towels?

they were hitting with him soap that was inside towels

Soap in towels in a way to beat somebody with minimal physical evidence that could get them in trouble.
