Aku
Man i keep watching this movie coz its so cool. Unlike most (games)->(movies) this one is actually really good. The second one was crap though but theres a 3rd comming out apparently.

botankus
I've always like Sonya Blade, I voted for her.

I think part III should be a comedy spoof of the whole thing. It would be a lot more entertaining.

Cinemaddiction
How about Christopher Lambert as "Rayden" vs his lisp?

Red Superfly
Ooooooh! Handbags at dawn Cine!

I too enjoyed this film. It at least kept true to the spirit of the game. A stupid, yet interesting beat em up.

So many films try and "add" to the story like Resident Evil, and the games end up being better than them anyway. With MK it just gave you what you went to see, and the action was great.

The sequel sucked. I loved the fight between Scorpion and Cage.

Scorpion rocks! /fanboyexclamation.

Aku
Yeh but Sonyas fight was rubbish

forumcrew
first movie was cool the second was not so much.. i always liked scorpion and sub zero

Red Superfly
MK Annihilation isnt looked at as being "canon" because Boon had little to no input on the film at all. MK was Boon all the way, but MK: Anihilation was a "fake" Mortal Kombat as far as the MK creators go.

I've heard they're planning to make a new MK set after the first one, i.e. a PROPER sequel to the first.

Aku
Sweet. Boon is cool. Notice how boon tobias is noob saibot swiched, the over-rated character of the MK games.

Red Superfly
I like that little fact about Noob Saibot.

Then there's Ermac, who was a glitch in the first game. It was when the game screwed up and coloured Sub Zero red instead of blue, and displayed the message "Error Macro". Thus, Ermac was born.

Aku
Wow. MK was best on the NES. Even though it didnt have any blood it had wicked animation. I used to have nightmares about Goro. lol. He was so hard to beat unless you used the special stratergy. Jump-Kick-Repeat.

forumcrew
haha yea i remember having the jump kick the crap out of him..

and a better sequel could be really cool

Red Superfly
Don't quote me on the sequel thing. I only know that Boon doesn't consider Annihilation as "canon". As far as he's concerned, it doesn't exist.

The "making the true sequel" thing isn't as set in stone.

Anyway that Mortal Kombat Deception is quite cool, although I wish they'd left in Kano, Jax and Cryax, some of the new characters are lame. Hotaru is good, though. Pai Mei lookalike Shujinko is also cool.

McBane
Both Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil were created by the same person so it just shows that it is not an easy task for the audience to accept both film and game versions.
Gaz

TheFilmProphet
I'm glad I'm not the only one here who appreciates the Mortal Kombat films. smokin'

Bring on the MK revolution!

Havoc470
i liked the first one growing up, and the second one just plain sucked to me...from film perspective the premise sure had some good idea's, but with the wrong actors

the director plain sucks at mending videogame features into his movies....sure goro looked good....but thats all the movie had going for it, so gorro's death = movie's death

new mk movie...sure, i'd love to see it done.....same director?....f*ck no, but more gritt would be a-mazing

this is all in my opinion

as a kid, the liu kang/reptile fight was the most amazing thing i had ever seen

Myth
I too remember jump kicking Goro and jumping away, then repeating. Now I remember how dumb it was to fight him, but scary at the same time. I voted for Scorpion's fight. Part 2 sucked. It was awful the way it just continued from the first and the animality was f*cking retarded in live-action.

Red Superfly
Oh man, I still have nightmares about that awful CGI blob that Lui Kang turned into.

KingAdRock
I voted for Liu Kang Vs. Reptile, because that fight was awesome, and reptile in the old days was cool, and I also picked Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion, because it was a good fight.
Plus, I heard that they are gonna forget about MK: Annihilation and probably make MK3 the sequal to the first MK, and this time Midway is in to help them make this movie good.

TheFilmProphet
It is almost 100% certain at this point that a different director will be taking over.

The most recent news on the director was reported yesterday, December 13. The rumored new director is George P. Cosmatos. http://mk3movie.mortalkombatonline.com/

Red Superfly
Oh cool someone else has heard about that too.

I'd love to see Kenshi and the NEW Sub-Zero in the next one - the one that looks like The Shredder from Ninja Turtles - so bad-ass.

Aku
BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL SUB ZERO NINJA AND REPTILE.

I hate him without his mask. And what about Kung Lao

Aku = Undefeated Champ with Kung Lao (Wins = 1 / Loss = 0)

Although i was playing a 7 year old. Plus i told him that kano was good and lets face it, no one in the history of MK has ever been good with Kano or liked him.

Myth
I liked Kano, though he was far from my best character.

dark1365
It was a toughie between the Reptile vs Liu Kang, and Chan, but I have to say Liu.
Chan got owned so bad by Shang Tsung. Had his jaw broken, his knee dislocated, his arm twisted broken, his backbone smashed(Shang just had to stomp on his back), and on top of all...his soul absorbed. That was the most painful fight I've ever seen. Ugghh.

Aku
Yeh well Mortal Kombat apart from having one of the uglyest fights at the begginning, Also has the most evil yet funny bad guy line of all time...

"I will take care of this Imputent Mortal myself."

or

"You puny mortal"

TheFilmProphet
Actually as bad as Mortal Kombat:Annihilation might have been I think it had the best fight scene between both films.

Subzero Vs Scorpion smokin'

And just for the record the character that Goro faught was not Arlene, his name was Art Lean. big grin

Red Superfly
Sub Zero vs Scorpion was a bit crap to be honest. Had a few cool moves, but I bet if there is a "proper" sequel - there will be THE Scorps and Subs match.

Aku
Whatever wise ass.

TheFilmProphet
Thanks smart

miahera
the scene with them in the TV series was cool. Sub-Zero could have kicked his butt if the fight was longer.

TheFilmProphet
Well I wasn't saying it was Oscar worthy for its choreography, I was just saying it was the best fight sequence in the franchise so far in my oppinion.

Aku
There there children. We are all about opinions on killermovies which is the nets number 1 forum. Just kidding.

Mortal Kombat is good and the second film sucks face it!!!!

TheFilmProphet
I never said it didn't wink

I just happen to like the Subzero Vs Scorpion fight scene.

RebelPhoenix
Looks like I found this discussion too late, as most has been said already but just to add: I loved the soundtrack in the first MK, it was well timed and fluid with the fight scenes featuring some great bands (imo) i.e Fear Factory, KDFDM, Type O Neg, and Napalm Death.

Also, what was up with Sonya (sp?) - she was gorgeous yes but could she fight..... um, minimal and too many bad one liners which were made worse by the acting e.g. 'My friends will come'. Thankfully the one is Annhilation had better moves but was still just not good enough. I really hope they cast her better in the next one.

Oh - and why did they kill of Jonny in the first 5 min of the second movie!?!? (rhetorical, I just like saying it because I can't get past it stick out tongue)

Ack one more thing - I was impressed with the ghostly ship and elaborate scenes back then and still am now because unlike many of the grander, more visually aesthetic scenes of modern movies, the ones in MK actually has depth and atmosphere. They weren't just there to overwhelm you at the genius of computer nerds, they had a haunting presence which coupled with the background music led for better ambience rather then being hollow and obviously artificial smile

Just my two cents embarrasment

Red Superfly
I have a few of the songs from the first movie. The Type O Negative one is excellent, and I always remember when the first movie came out the trailer for it was awesome.

"MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAT!"

The main music kicked so much arse.

RebelPhoenix
I love that shout too big grin

Aku - was the Lui vs Guitanna (sp?) 'fight' left out because they weren't really opposing one another?

Red Superfly
Lui vs Kitanna you mean?

Didn't know they fought, probably a test fight but was left out because it was unimportant.

RebelPhoenix
Yep that's it - I always hear it with a 'G' for some reason messed

It was just one scene on the beach in front Shang Tsung where they were talking to each other whilst pretending to fight.

Red Superfly
OH, I dunno, I haven't seen it in a LOOOOONG time.

The only bits I remember are Scorpion and Johnny Cage fighting througha forest and then in hell or something. Oh and I remember Johnny Cage doing his splits-punch on Goro and then later saying "those were $1000 sunglasses you arsehole" or something and then knocking him off a cliff. My memory is hazy.

Also, if they were to do a new film - how would they show Scorpions spear?

I seem to remember it being a creature inside his arm in the movie. In the latest games he no longer has the creature and now throws a spear attached to some rope instead. I think in the videogames he had the rope/spear in 1, then the creature in 2 & 3 then in 4 and the rest he went back to using his rope and spear.

I prefer the rope and the spear.

Remember his spears in Annihilation? Metal chain creatures on chains? WTF? That was so stupid. He isn't Spawn.

RebelPhoenix
$500 sunglasses stick out tongue

I don't know how they'd show that, since it changes and because the creature head version was pulled off in the first film when it got stuck in a tree, unless it grows back of course...

Thankfully I don't remember much from Annihilation wink

vvvrulz
Yeah, i did my best to forget that too.

Cage versus Scorpion was the best easily.

TheFilmProphet
* Well they couldn't get the actor from the first film to reprise his role as Johny Cage so they cast someone else and killed the character in the first 5 minutes. Although there rumors abound that the actor from the first film (Linden Ashby) will return once again as Johny in Mortal Kombat 3: Devastation.

* Very well said, I couldn't have said better myself.
Right on target. thumb up

vvvrulz
Apart from Liu Kang and Kitana, pretty much all the original cast was gone. It just goes to show the quality of the second script, lol.

TheFilmProphet
No one actually cared about making a film the second time, they just figured the first made money so they could just rush in without the original cast and decent story and still make money.

pr1983
and how it backfired...

TheFilmProphet
It destroyed whatever potential franchise there was to be held. sad

kanis
alien The first mortal kombat movie owns the ass off the second one and both the Johnny Cage V scorpian and Liu Kang V reptile fights are great. And I hope that they make the third movie if made better than the second and Christopher Lambert does not speak with a lisp.

pr1983
lambert was cool imo...

i didn't like remar at all... though he could fight...

TheFilmProphet
True Lambert was good...

Although neither one of them actually did any fighting since Ray Park did the fighting for Remar and Lambert hardly moved.

I might be a little crazy here, but I think we need a new Raiden in MK3, who? I don't know.

pr1983
oh yeah, park did the fighting didn't he... f*ck it then... new raiden...

TheFilmProphet
Yeah exactly, lol

Aku
What else has Liu Kang been in? I saw the second one the other day and I just thought it was trying to hard to be cool and introduce characters from the computer games. Which was a really bad idea coz Jax was camp, Motaro didnt look evil enough, the female goro was well ugly (even though shes supposed to be) and sindel was quite good looking considering she looked like 90 years old.

TheFilmProphet
If you mean Robin Shou the actor who played Liu Kang then he hasn't done much else besides MK and MK2.

Here is a little info on the films he was in besides the MK films.

Aku
So nothing of any importance really.

kanis
alien Robin shue has been in other movies he was in a film called beverly hills ninja with Chris farley where he played his brother who helps him.

Aku
Bevely Hills ninja was well good

TheFilmProphet
Yeah, too bad Hollywood never picked him up. Who knows he could have been a younger version of a Jackie Chan.

Lord_Andres
Johnny Cage totally owned the first movie, 'This is where you fall down', or those where 500$ sunglasses *******' HUH????? laughing out loud love that fight

Aku
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Wasn't he in Waynes World? and Airheads?

kanis
alien I don't think Robin Shue was in Wayne's world and if he was I haven't seen him in it.

Spectr4L
Scorpion vs. Johnny Cage was my favorite fight.

I love it when Scorpion does this crazy combo on JC on the wooden bridge...omg!

TheFilmProphet
It is my favorite from the first film too. happy

Wolfie
The first one was good. The second... not so much.

All the fights were awesome, some like the Sonya vs. Kano and Liu Kang vs. Sub Zero ended rather quickly. I voted for Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion. That was just too cool. The guy they got to play Johnny Cage in the sequel SUCKED though.

TheFilmProphet
That was because they couldn't get the actor from the first to come back so they placed some other actor into the role and killed off the character in the first 5 mins.

HarmoNiC FLo
I'm such a huge fan of Mortal Kombat its not even funny. i knew about tha third movie for a year now and yeah i'm a nerd when it comes to MK.

TheFilmProphet
Me too embarrasment

HarmoNiC FLo
Hes coming back in tha third one . his name is linden ashby

TheFilmProphet
Yeah I knew all about that since a while back, but thanks for telling the rest of the people about it.

HarmoNiC FLo
Tha bosses and storyline got worse and worse. after shao khan they went to quan chi and shinook which had a dumb plot. |this is in MK4 btw|. i blew my money on Metal Gear Solid 3 {also a huge fan of that] so i couldn't buy MK : Deception but i dont think its bosses are that great either.

There was a pretty good cartoon on tha USA network a couple years back. anyone see it? and mr. Film Prophet! find some info on MK III please. do ur thing, yo

TheFilmProphet
I completely agree

I saw the toon too, it was pretty good actually. Anyway here is the news you wanted,

Another Peek inside the Casting Office

When simply a glass pressed to the other side of the door just won't do...

Christopher Lambert tells SFX Magazine that he will be back as Connor McCloud for the next "Highlander" movie (wonder if the studio's aware of his intentions?). According to Lambert, he'll have a "small cameo" in "Highlander : The Source", which Brett Leonard will direct for Dimension . Meanwhile, Lambert's about to start work on "Mortal Kombat 3" for Director George P.Cosmatos .

http://www.moviehole.net/news/4822.html

Aku
I found that Mortal Kombat was just whey better than most other new age martial arts films and it didnt have the cheesyness of streetfighter

TheFilmProphet
I completely agree, it even gave some of the characters more depth and made them more interesting than in the games.

Arcane
i cant wait till the thrid one, i hope its good

hey tfp, i didnt know you were back

TheFilmProphet
came back yesterday.

Wolfie
Okay, what things need to be changed to make MK3 good?

1. Johnny Cage gets the same actor and doesn't die at the beginning.
2. Rayden gets a better actor (hopefully the original) and doesn't change his look mid-way into the movie.
3. Get a better Sheeva and Montaro (sp?)
4. Screw that whole Sub Zero brother deal.

I liked the Jax they had in there.

I'm sure you have many other ideas. Sorry, haven't watched it in a while and I can't think of any more right now.

TheFilmProphet
They seem like some decent ideas, except for #3 because I would just throw those two characters out of the whole story. Overall good though.

Aku
They should do more on reptile and bring shang tsung back from the dead coz hes possibly the coolest bad guy ever.

"I will take care of this IMPUtent mortal myself" -Shang Tsung

TheFilmProphet
Yeah I love that line too happy

Arcane
they should have all the ninjas in it, and smoke as a ninja not a robot

yerssot
perhaps just dump the previous two movies and start all over?

though they should keep Cage in it

Aku
They should do that with street fighter. (the Jean Claude Van Dam one).

yerssot
that entire movie is truely forgettable... from van damme's ugly face and terrible acting'ability' to some characters just accidently being in it... and I wanted Blanca

pr1983
blanka was in it...

yerssot
yeah, some badly painted guy that would pee his pants as soon as he saw blood... I wanted Blanca the real animal sad

pr1983
oh yeah i suppose...

Discos
I wil definetly agree with the original post.

The first one is a great film, shows true warrior style.....but damn the sequel was just a second rate bunch of crap.

Seriously, it was like turning mortal kombat into a cheap porno - you know what I mean, turning a film into a porno with cheap bad actors and a bad plot.

How on earth could they get rid of cage like that at the start

Discos - Bad Director. Bad!

Aku
I think the fact the Bison was like the most UNscary bad guy ever, and that Ryu and Ken were not really the main characters, the story swapped chun-li for cammy? Sagat wasn't 50 foot tall or scary? where the hell was Guiles cool hair? Why did Ryu and Ken look camp?

Man I could go on forever, im a huge street fighter fan but that movie just took the piss!

dark1365
More ninjas.

Alpha Centauri
Mortal Kombat was always gonna be the better movie.

The first one had far less action than the second and it's fights lasted about 5 seconds. It was like the video game version of what's happened with the X-Men movies but much worse. Mediocre first movie, rentable. Second movie at first glance appears to be so much better. More impact, more action, same amount of plot. Then you realise it's just more of the same with worse actors.

"Street Fighter" was just......ugh. Don't even get me started man. Just don't.

-AC

pr1983
whats wrong with the fights from the first one? they werent that short imo...

forumcrew
hahahahahhahahaha thats all i have to say about street fighter

Happy Dance <-- this guy is more entertaining

pr1983
street fighter was a shambles... a cinematic low unto itself... i mean, they just made van damme the main character, no matter who he played... that was a f*cking joke...

Alpha Centauri
"whats wrong with the fights from the first one? they werent that short imo..."

Sub-Zero Vs Liu Kang? I think Scorpion Vs Cage was the longest random fight.

-AC

pr1983
ok, sub zero v liu kang was... but cage and scorpion wasn't bad... or sonya kano, or liu kang reptile...

Alpha Centauri
"or sonya kano,"

Echhhhhhhhh. "Ello baybee, didjoo miss me?"

You could actually tell that Bridgette Wilson did not train in Martial Arts for her role. Well, it was one fight, but still.

-AC

pr1983
thunder thighs...

kanis
alien I reckon that the lu kang and the reptile fight was the longest in mortal kombat and the best. I agree the only reason Guile and Cammy were the main characters was because they were played well known actors and another thing Ryu and Ken did not hang around with each other and sell fake weapons in the streetfighter anime movie( with a nice of image of chun-li in the shower) Ryu wandered on his own looking for fights.

HarmoNiC FLo
Fights may have not lasted long, but i didn't notice since tha rest of tha movie was so good. i loved tha first mortal kombat. from tha lighting to tha music it was a perfect 4 stars. actors were great too...it seemed so fitting and not corny at all. tha rayden and johny cage in anhilation didn't fit nice.

Man just thinking about how MK was makes me wana rent it again. it was tha reason i started practicing martial arts.

TheFilmProphet
What was disappointing was that they didn't even switch actors for the "transformation" in the film, they kept the same sorry looking guy and splashed green paint all over him. I mean how expensive would it really be to hire some random bodybuilder to do it? It was all a really cheap, disappointing, sad, and pathetic looking version of Lou Ferrigno when he did the "Incredible Hulk" live action TV series.

As for the length of the fight sequences in the first MK, the duration wasn't very long, but you have to remember that they were dealing with about a 25 million budget. If Hollywood has learned anything from the sequel then they will present us with at least a decent 3rd film with all the lengthy fights we can handle.

Red Superfly
At least Blanka somewhat, vaguely, resembled Blanka, if you were partially blind.

I want to know what the hell happened Dhalsim.

THEY JUST MADE A NEW RANDOM CHARACTER AND SLAPPED THE NAME DHALSIM ON HIM!

HarmoNiC FLo
AHEM MAKE A STREET FIGHTER THREAD

TheFilmProphet
laughing out loud

Shadow_King
i always liked the johnny cage vs scorpion fight

TheFilmProphet
Yeah, it was truly entertaining.

yerssot
guess they just wanted to include him somehow messed

TheFilmProphet
By giving a 150 pound B-Class actor 40 pounds of horrible green make-up and paint.

Anyway, I'm still waiting for some news on MK3, but nothing much yet.

HarmoNiC FLo
Why is tha MK3 projekt kept so much under wraps?

HarmoNiC FLo

Wolfie
Is that the official cast or your dream cast, HarmoNiC FLo? Because that looks too good to be true. The original Liu Kang, Rayden, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion. Reptile playing Sub Zero. The Annihilation Jax, Shinnok, and Mileena.

Also, Sonya Blade won't be in this one? I would settle for the Annihilation Sonya.

HarmoNiC FLo
Its Official man. movietome.com

ragesRemorse
It's not, it's just that nobody cares about another bad movie.

Shadow_King
laughing

HarmoNiC FLo
tha first one was awesome, by bad movie i hope u are only referring to anhilation

Stokely
I loved the first film. I was 10 when I saw it in Samoa. The best fights were Scorpian vs. Johnny Cage and Reptile vs. Liu Kang . I dunno if this counts but I love the part where Scorpian and Sub Zero attack the crew on the ship and Rayden f.cks them up - that was GREAT - favourite scene in the film.

The second film was soooooo bad. The best fight in that would have to be Sonya and Mileena's mud wrestle . I don't know how ppl could like the guy who played Jax! He was a bad actor and he was way off when he tried to sound ghetto - "yeah, now that's what I'm talkin' about", ugh.

Stokely
Oh and this is the first time I've heard news of MK3 - it sounds promising. I really enjoyed the tv series, the choreography was entertaining and it somewhat followed the game well.

HarmoNiC FLo
Robin Shou fits liu kang so perfectly

Stokely
Oh, did anyone else feel that Mortal Kombat looks like it's taken a LOT from "Big Trouble Little China"? I dunno if this is something the creators acknowledge or what.

Ironman
scorpion and cage the best you could tell the cgi on his spere even know its a rope wrapped around his waste it was awesome.

Ironman
yeah they akknowledge big trouble in lil china thats were they got raiden and scorpion was made up from the blue imo.

Cinemaddiction
Bump and moved to the new forum!

Scorpion_Master
When is the movie released?? I must see it!! I hope they make scorpion use he's "Get over here" attack ON some one..

Tekno Boy
They should include more MK characters, like the robots. Also, what's the deal with Smoke? is he a robot? is he a ninja? I just don't get it. They should give Sub-Zero more of a starring role in the film. Sub-Zero is the best character in the MK universe bar none.

DarkC
I own the first one, it's actually good for a VG movie.

DarkWizard

Wtf?! MK rules!! rock

Hell yeah! It was very crappy in a very enjoyable and very true-to-origin way.

Unlike the sequel, which was simply very crappy.

BackFire
Love the original MK, good fun.

Scorpion_Master
Yeah..

JacopeX
I bet you that the MK3 movie will be the best out of all of them. Computer graphics has advanced over the years so I say yea.

Scorpion_Master
..... HELL YEAH! I think its going to be awesome!

Ushgarak
It's been so delayed, though, not least by Katrina.

Rumours that Linden Ashby is returning to play Cage and Lambert for Raiden are all very good, but the longer this takes the less likely it is to be so. Ashby can't look the part for much longer.

jenzie
1: liu kang v reptile
2: johnny cage v scorpion
3: sonya v kano

wa aloways dissapointed in goro's last fight, thought it was a bit lame

as far as i'm concerned, GORO IS NOT DEAD!!!!

Ushgarak
Pftt, Cage kicked his ass...

BackFire
Goro learned his lesson the hard way, don't **** with another man's sunglasses.

Ushgarak
Damn right.

You see that big green thing there, jenzie? Yup? Ok, That is Goro's ass. And that thing there is Johnny Cage's foot travelling towards it.

DarkWizard
Too bad Johnny got the boot in #2.

Ushgarak
Everything connected with anything even remotely decent got the boot in 2. The whole 'they want Linden Ashby back' thing indicates that that is all being undone. Or, hopefully, ignored.

Thorinn
omg, mk2 sucked on so many levels it was unreal, but i still bought it, because mk1 was sitting in my dvd book case all alone. sad

Wolfie

"Those were $500 sunglasses, a**hole!" laughing out loud

But yeah, that was a weird fight. He broke his sunglasses, Shang Sung said "Finish him," and Goro gets it in the crotch. Then a couple kicks and he falls off a cliff. Not much of a fight, just comic value.

DarkC

Rather pitiful that his neck snapped so easily.

systemshock2
The first one was awesome. Who didn't get chills hearing that guy scream Mortal Kombat, followed by one of the coolest title sequences ever. It surprisingly played well too. Full of cliche's, but it still somehow worked. And as for the second one, I recently rented it again, and god bless them but it really seemed like they all tried their best with what they were given. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's like most of the front actors knew this would probably be one of the only times they would be in a nationwide-released movie, so they tried their best. Especially the Raiden and the Sonya actors. If that makes me corny and naive, then so be it =). How this one escaped cult status is beyond me.

DarkC
I have four MK movie fights in my profile to watch. One's from armageddon, but still cool.
