The Doctor, Romana, and K9; while visiting the 19th century on vacation, meet a veteran of the Crimea who, after some chance remark from the Timelords, asks them if they have ever travelled through time.
When asked why he would ask such a thing, the old Leftenant (an ancestor of Lethbridge-Stuart, as it happens) recounts a fantastical tale of his unit being kidnapped be someone called "Immortus" to fight against someone chap called "Kang" in a place called "Chronopolis."
Deciding to investigate, they bring Lt. Lethridge to the TARDIS, and use the "residual spacetime potential" within his body to determine the proper coordinates for Chronopolis. Being imprecise and cranky, and perhaps due to proximity to the Heart of Forever, the TARDIS makes the Doctor and his Companions arrive well before the Destiny War. They are spotted by Redwolf and aprehended by the Anachronauts after only a brief exploration. The Doctor and Romana get a feel for the HoF's nearby energy.
Once he realizes their nature, Kang asks the timelords to be his guests and the have evasive banter over a sumptuous feast. The Doctor begins to make some snide comments about Kang having raided a Cyberman's wardrobe, and they all get thrown in the dungeon while Kang tries to unlock the TARDIS.
Luckily, Marcus, Kang's son, has become quite taken with Romana, and does somethung foolish that allows them to escape. When Kang finds out, he executes Marcus (again) and there ensues a game of cat and mouse with Kang's gaurds, which seems to mostly involve lots of running down hallways.
Eventually, after a few close calls, the Good Guys arrive at the Heart of Forever. Before Kang can arrive to stop them (no stopping time within cChronopolis) Romana figures out how they can unravel the HoF and send the pieces of Chronopolis back to their home era's.
They all make it back to the TARDIS just as the whole place is vanishing, leaving Kang alone in the Void left behind. At least that is until a yellow Greek collumn appears and a man who looks like Immortus but dressed all in black steps out and says "Greetings Conqueror, I am the Master, and we have much to discuss...."
