what game do you think is the scariest? i would have to go for doom 3 because there is no scarier game then that to me, everything surprises you even if its your 100th time starting over, just make sure the lights are out u have some headphones on, turn up the volume to where it sounds real and you cant hear anything else, your gonna wanna use the restroom guaranteed!!

pr1983
silent hill is probably the most atmospheric of them all... so i'll go with that...

gls
i liked eternal darkness..the whole messing with ur mind things is really clever

belly_jeans349
ive only played silent hill 2 it scared me bad...i wanted silent hill 3 the one with the themepark sounded nice no expression

SaTsuJiN
the first silent hill was the creepiest at the time

belly_jeans349
i supposseeee

The Flash
I've never played the Silent Hill or Doom series so I'll have to vote for RE.

ChickinMeat
Silent Hill, gives me the eebie-jeebies!

BackFire
Silent Hill and Doom 3.

belly_jeans349
whats your favorite part of the scary games roll eyes (sarcastic) mine is when the imps come out at u on doom 3 big grin

BackFire
The school area in the original silent hill was brilliant, with the little shadow babies, and wierd looking children with knives....terrifying.

belly_jeans349
i liked the hospital in silent hill 2 it scared the living **** outta me!!!

ChickinMeat
I found the hospital in Silent Hill 3 to be ever scarier!

I love the series, i still havnt picked up SH4 though, i might do that soon

belly_jeans349
its on silent hill 3 too? holy crap dude i have to get it now lol but after i beat doom 3 again smile im so addicted to it i wish i had DSL so i could play it online *sob*

ChickinMeat
I STILL havnt had the chance to play Doom3, its the one game i really really really wanted to play, and i just havnt had the chance.

damn my puny PC!

TrAnCeDuO
resident evil.....its too scary cry

belly_jeans349
i dont think RE is scary i just think its a game to make you jump...what i mean by scary is it stays stuck in your mind and you can possibly have nightmares (like i did just the other night about a demon slaughtering me on doom 3 LOL no joke). and why cant your computer run doom 3 chickinmeat?

Lord_Andres
Doom3 dose it best for me, or the blair witc games

Smallville
The first Resident Evil scared the piss out of me and my buddy Andrew when we played it for the first time.

dark1365
Scary is atmosphere, not shocked scary. But hey, that's just my opinion.

belly_jeans349
thats why i go for silent hill and doom 3..silent hill has very realistic fog and stuff...doom 3 is like all realistic, bodys dont go threw walls when they die they fall against it...u can punch bodies off the ledge and they fall like they really would in real life...and when its hot or cold you can tell but resident evil doesnt show as much as this to my opinion

dAngEr_Is_gO!
Silent Hill hands down. Walking through foggy streets with your radio crackling static to warn of hidden enemies and then the whole town going to hell (literally).
The SH series is more psychological mind-screw type of horror, whereas the RE series is more jump out scare you with loud noises sort of thing. Doom 3 seems to be the middle ground of the two.
All of these games/series are worthy of anyone's attention. Well.. maybe not SH4, that was a bit weak.

knight
Right from the start of SILENT HILL, the sudden noises, the graphics and the music that went with it all... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrh!!!!

When you are in the sewer system in the first game, that dripping water is actually the music score for that part of the game, and those groans coming from the tunnels.

belly_jeans349
the problem is, is people judge doom 3 because its on xbox, play it on pc trust me, they totally screwed up doom 3 by putting it on xbox because of the multiplayer screws up the story totally, the story is only 1 chosen one is supposed to kill satan, but multiplayer screws it up because how the hell is there 3-4 chosen ones? and it ruins the scare tactics, the pc with headphones on loud enough where it sounds real, and ur in the dark ALONE, then you feel like ur there because every single thing makes a sound and there is gravity omg what kind of game has gravity where things fall against the walls instead of threw them and things fall off of edges by their weight, if the legs carry more weight then just their arms dangle down, and things crawl all over the walls!! omg imma go play it now lol

dAngEr_Is_gO!
I've played it both on the PC and finished it on the Xbox and I have to say single player story mode on the Xbox holds up nicely. Haven't played coop.

belly_jeans349
i can't wait to buy the expansion pack..i saw some pics and wooooo that loox fun...it doesnt look as scary though....but i wanna buy it!!

whitedragon
Silent Hill 1 was the best, you had the school levels, hospital levels, it created an atmosphere that made you want to progress through the game with extreme caution also with the company of being s*%t scared. Parasite Eve was just as scary, the desert level ruled, that creeped me out, as for doom-it has its moments.

DarkCrawler
Silent Hill I, II and III. So scary. confused

When I played them, I had to put pause on it for few times and go read Donald Duck comics to lessen the fear...I'm an coward. stick out tongue

I hated Silent Hill 2, I liked 3 up until the part with the EMPTY construction yard, huge turn off. I was waiting for some freaky shit to come out of the walls and grab me. Resident Evil is always good for scares, not 4 though, or the Outbreak series, but the originals, especially REmake.

I say if ur lookin for somethin to take you around the horror fest block go for doom 3. u get great almost real to life graphics, pulse pounding action and heart stopping monsters beyond reality. I am still a fan of SH and RE series but they kinda got slow. With doom 3 you get non-stop action. Sh and RE are great at shadows and dark, but look at doom 3. U CAN'T SEE MONSTERS IN SHADOWS WAITING TO JUMP OUT AND RIP UR HEAD OFF! and u don't have any warnings like in SH for upcoming monsters. try this at home with doom 3. take 4 pieces of glass (any kind) place one in front of ur tv one on each side and one in back of u (trust me this will scare the SHIT outa u!) now turn off the lights put on head-phones, shut the door and play doom 3. the effect will leave you HORRIFIED. the glass sheets will reflect the images on to each on, thus making u feel like u are in the game. u will see a monster and it will look like 4 coming at u from all different angles. i literally ran from my room when a demon baby came flying around a corner. so try this with doom 3. you can still try it with SH or RE they won't be as scary but they will sure as hell give u nightmares! eek!

Silent hill series is definately the scariest game ive ever played.. well.. not all of the series.. but overall.. id have to say silent hill series..

Gregory
Silent Hill 1 and 2; 3 was pretty good, too, but it wasn't as gripping as the first two, and I hated the ending ("Blonde's have more fun?" What the hell, people?). Silent Hill 4 ... um ... it had a nice introductory sequence, I guess, and some of the notes in the orphanage were kind of disturbing, but that was a pretty feeble game.

Nobody's mentioned Fatal Frame yet, so I will--you all need to play that game.

Silent Hill 4 was more of a paranoid, heatpounding scare. Having ghosts chase after you really made you just want to run like mad. I'd say Silent Hill is the best scariest game ever... on the list. lol

I was going to mention Fatal Frame. I've had to stop multiple times while playing. It deserves the most frightening game title.

n00bslayer
fatal frame is pretty good at scares especially the second one.

BackFire
Man, the first Silent Hill was so damn atmospheric, few things are creepier in the gaming world then hearing the radio cracking, thus knowing a creature was near, but not knowing the exact location.

Something else that made the game so effective was teh lighting. At the time it's lighting effects were bar none the most effective use of lighting ever in a game. In the school lvl it was pitch black, and the little light around your neck only let you see a few feet in front of you, you'd hear the radio crackling, you'd be walking around, then all of a sudden a little baby demon would be right in front of you. Scary stuff.

The game also really jsut messed with your mind, more so then any other horror game. It was twisted, macarbe, and disturbing. Few things are creepier in the gaming world then the shadow babies in the school bathrooms that would be seen for a couple of seconds then disapear.

I remember when the game first came out, I was playing it at like 2am in teh front room, the only one up, all the lights in the house were out. Bed time crept up, so I turned the game off and I sat there realizing how creeped out I was. I was afraid to move or get up off of the chair, freaked out that I'd be attacked by baby demons or see a shadow baby. It was at this moment that I realized that this game was unlike any other horror game out there, it was actually horrifying and stayed with you long after you turned it off.

ragesRemorse
Excluding resident evil four. Resident evil games have never done very much in the way of creating a terrifying story. The first 3 silent hill games were all written very well. The story was intertwined with the gameplay better than any other game. There are few scenes from resident evil games that i will remmber for giving me the creeps, but the entire experience of silent hill was frieghtening good fun.

daniel18
resident evil used to scare the living shits out of me those damn zombies and the dronning noises

JToTheP
Yeah, Resident Evil used to really have me going as a teenager to no end, I loved it. 4 I didn't find scary at all, aside from the first Regenerator due to the breathing noise, but still an incredible game. Silent Hill just has a complete f***ed up thing going for it. Lately Haunting Ground has kept me on high-end & annoyed due to me not being used to a horror game with this level of realism.

3 has multiple endings if you didn't know. I was turned off by 3 by the empty construction yard.....then I saw the video of the room in the carnival or wherever it was with the giant mirror, that shit scared me SO bad. I couldn't stop STARING at my monitor when I saw it off the website. I was so horrified, curious, & shocked all at once, I hadn't been like that for a WHILE either.

Best i played recently was Eternal Darkness: Sanity requiem, bit dull towards the end, but a couple of very good scares!
Alone in the Dark should definately get an honourable mention along with Res evil.

Played a bit of doom 3, scary game, but my computer is a bit of a cripple.. didnt run well.

Silent hill is one i've always ment to play but never got around to, is it console only or is there a PC conversion?

RoyMC
silent hill 3 is creepy and doom 3 made my friend do pee in his pants so ill say both

DaRk Lotus
silent hill series

crazy_shadow
some dude told me doom 3 had bad lightning and that it's "too dark"
Ok here's the thing...

1.)it's underground
2.)no windows
3.)lights get shattered in 60% of the places
4.)it makes it scarier

then they said silent hill had great lightning...when i could barely see anything that was going on because the stupid apartment complex thing was too dark. it was like pitch black.

Doom 3 also had its ways of making ANYTHING you see that could move, actually fall. I pushed a cup off the table i mean damn!, anything could move. Silent hill you couldnt move anything off the table, and the lil radio static always made it where you knew somethin was comming. That's what made the scare factor go down, you KNEW what was comming to you. Doom 3 you had no clue when something was comming at you.

Movie_Geek_
I have never played Doom 3 all that much, A friend of mine has it so I have only ever played it at her house. The Game scared me senseless the first time I played it though.

crazy_shadow
i like doom 3 shadows...you're walking and u see something walking up from its shadow...one time i freaked the **** out cuz this guys body fell out of the ceiling and the shadow was big on the wall im like AHH and i started shootin my gun lol

The thing is, when you know it's coming, you think, "Holy crap! Where's it coming from?!"

I'd have to say that right now, F.E.A.R. seems pretty creepy. I only heard about what happens in the demo and I was scared for a week. But also, Fatal Frame should be up there. That was pretty creepy.
(my evaluation of scary isn't the scare-scary, it's the creepy-scary that keeps you up at night afraid that something's going to happen to you)

EsteemedLeader
doom 3 sucked. there was no recoil factor. that practically eliminates any illusion of realism, making the game laughable, destroying the scare factor. a lot of the bosses from RE are pretty scary. like the giant crocodile, the leech thing from Outbreak, and especially the mutated girl from the Gamecube RE (she freaked me out with the shackles, and the sack on her head, and that MOANING!)

I played Doom 3 on both computer and X-Box. So scary. All it does is make you jump when they pop out.

EsteemedLeader
doom 3 sucked and was not scary

KingDubya
I doubt the third is that much scarier than the first. Sure, it looks more realistic, but it needs a creepy storyline to make it really scary. The story is basically, "You are a guy in some sort of station on Mars. All hell breaks loose and creatures from hell attack. Suddenly you have training with military-grade weaponry and you don't have the brains to duct-tape your flashlight to your gun. Kill everything in your path." BORING!

ESB-1138
Thank you

EsteemedLeader
any army of darkness thats stupid enough to take over a barren, alien landscape like mars, instead of beautiful, soul-rich earth, and is weak enough to get its asses hand to itsselves by some random guy with a machine gun, isnt that scary. lol the duct tape, i remember that.

KingDubya
I remember that one of my friends managed to get thrown off of some bridge and nothing was there. When he asked one of my other friends if he had any idea how that happened, the other friend said, "Everything in Doom 3 happens for a reason. Satan just popped up out of nowhere, pushed you off the bridge, then disappeared in less than a second."

EsteemedLeader
and if i loose a shotgun shell into the face of a 3-foot anorexic demon freak, i expect it to fly at least 20 feet away. but do they? no. do they do anything at all when you shoot them? no...

story: try to warn earth that the demons are trying to get onto the reinforcers spaceshuttle to get to earth, then when you get that, try to contact an escape ship to get you off of mars.

Where would you get the duct-tape if you can explain? and which gun would he put it on? theres 9 different onces plus the soul cube.

you dont try to kill everything in your path, 50% of the time you dodge demons not try and kill them. and when you are walking you are always going slow because you do get scared, from the demons tryin to jump on you threw the cracks in the wall. you dont go running threw destroying everything. You wouldnt get past mars city if that was the point of the game.

crazy_shadow

they do make noise, but i dont think demons would be too afraid of a guy with a gun since they would just be sent back to hell to respawn.

Resdient Evil.

crazy_shadow
dont see why so many people think RE is scary..all it is, is a game that makes you jump, not make you scared for good..

Impediment
The Resident Evil storylines are much more intricate and involved, but the first Silent Hill was devilishly scary, not to mention that dude in SH2 with the red "toilet" on his head. That sh*t freaked me out for days. However, RE has much more replayability for me than SH.

crazy_shadow
i laughed at that guy cuz he looked like he was rapin the other monster things

Duct tape is the ultimate adhesive. Anyone who doesn't bring duct tape with them to Mars is just weird. And since you would have a roll of duct tape, you could pull the flashlight off of the gun you were using, then tape it onto the one you're using now.

Alpha Centauri
The scariest thing about Silent Hill is the fact that you have absolutely no clue what's going on, you're not some trained marine and you have no protection.

It's more close to what it would be like if you actually ended up in that situation. The monsters are just horrifying. That's the only place I'd say no game can touch it.

Otherwise it will always go to Resi's.

The first Metal Gear (not technically, but first major) was fairly scary in the sense of the sinister element of it.

I haven't played Silent Hill, but the game that has affected me the most fear-wise is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Instead of going purely for a "Rar I'm a demon be afraid!" track, it manages to claw into your mind, and make you love it while it breaks you down. The insanity effects were always great and surprising, and several things managed to make me jump. I actually turned my game off during the "Memory Card Erase" thing, only to realize my stupidity after it was off, which left me giggling nervously afterward. ^_^;;

No, it didnt have many "BOO" moments, but the entire game had a frightening atmosphere.

i thought it was funny...of course me n my friends were drunk...like that guy that brings out the first minigun, my friend said in a high ass pitch "YOU WANT SOME OF ME???" rofl, it was hilarious. then these guys kept trying to jump over this lil water river on the island, and we kept shootin them and they kept fallin in the water, i just thought the game was hilarious more then scary.

Doom 3 isnt scary in the slightest and I got halfway through the game and sold it, just so boring and not challenging, nothing was suprising, you here a moan turn around oh look a zombie bang dead next, not intresting at all.

Scariest game system shock 2 you dnt hear nething for ages then here footsteps behind you and "FRESH MEAAAAAAAT" turn around theres nothing there turn back to where you were and there's a zombie in frount of you hitting you in the nuts with a pipe, now thts scary instead of moaning then seeing the zombie walk around the corner.

Doom 3 guys....

My worst time was when I ran round a corner to hear some woman scream "They took my baby, OMG they took my baby...." then that little baby/fly mutation thing jumped at me... I was freaked out.....

who didn't run a mile when the first guy turned in to a zombie....! I was like "Urrr GET OUT OF HERE!!!! THIS PISTOL IS DOING SQUAT TO IT!!!!"

Resident is kinda scarely... You never know when those camera angles will jump out and get you..... The zombies are just tooo slow to be any sort of a threat....

The Doom Master
i'm ashamed. doom 3 is the only one i've played of those, but i'm not including the 'other' selection. never even seen silent hill in action, and only watched someone else play resi evil. so i've gone with doom 3. i thought it was pretty scary, anyway!

The dogs in Resident Evil 4. So rediculously scary.

To anyone that hasn't played Resi 4 yet - when you get to "the garden maze" bit, be afraid.

You can hear them coming, but you don't know where from.......and when they pounce, Jesus..............

Then there's also the blind Wolverine type people who charge at you and are an instant decap if you get in the way. Then you have to fight TWO! Nerve shredding stuff.

Scary as f*ck.

RE4 takes the cake for nerve wracking indeed.

First dog encounter made me jump real high.
I basically had time to go "What the f - !?" before one lunged forward and rips Leon's throat out.

The Wolverine is extremely stressing too. The instance where you had to fight two wasn't as bad when you killed the rest of the monk dudes, ran to opposite sides of the room and sniped their backs while they wandered around.

The cage fight was much higher on the "SHIT!" factor if you stayed in.

Doom3. You can't beat the scary atmosphere of that game.

Doom 3 is pretty f*cking scary, but F.E.A.R scared me more, I think... That game had so many creepy sounds. I played it with headphones on and in the dark once and wanted to cry after having the living sh*t scared out of me. Then again, I'm easily scared when playing almost any first-person shooter...

RE4 the scariest thing is the Goddamn Regenerators.

ESB -1138
Resident Evil 4. It just builds up the tension and you can't even relax during the cut scenes or else you will die.

And the regenerators.

Good old Krauser and his knife, I miss that scene.

The monks creeped me out the most, especially in the part with the huge atrium and open rooms and there were coming from every which direction. It was hard to turn shoot an enemy without turning your back on him.

Those were pretty freaky, though they didn't come in large groups. The rasping breathes they take and the way they move are pretty damn unsettling nonetheless.

One of the most memorably "SHIIIIT!" moments was very early in the game where Leon enters the Pueblo and you're pretty much under siege with Leatherface bearing down on you.

I had my arms relaxed, was leaning back, and was completely caught unaware after the first attempted ambush.

The "Like you, I'm American" part.

The music loops and the voice acting could be slightly better, but it is worthy of a movie screen. Anyone else notice that Leon is ambidextrous?

ESB -1138
That has to be one of the greatest cutscenes ever.

Am I alone in not thinking RE4 was particularly scary? It was extremely tense, but it was more an action game than a horror game.

Anyone here play Haunting Ground? If you see it used, I recommend it--no guns, no way to kill or seriously slow down the monsters, just hiding where you can and running like hell.

ESB -1138
Haunting Ground was boring as hell. In RE4 you had to do the same thing with Ashley expect you actually had ways to kill your enemies.

DarkC
There's different types of scary; RE4 takes the title for "Pants-shitting" scary, but I say that Silent Hill takes the title for "Nail biting, twitching creepy" scary.

Doom3 takes spooky ass environment scary.

I wouldn't describe it as "boring" at all. Not having ways to kill your enemies was the entire point.
