Sly vs Arnie!

Which the better actor during 80's/90's?

ADarksideJedi
I like them both!

majid86
Google 'Kenshiro vs Raoh'
And you will see an animated Sly vs an animated Arnie.

lol

ADarksideJedi
I will thank you.

Alpha-7
Sly by miles.

majid86
But Arnie became the bigger draw

He may of become a bigger draw but he was and will always be rubbish.

majid86
Arnie was not that bad of an actor man

003
Yeah, he really was.

majid86
you could say the same about Sly

Not really. Sly is an reasonable actor and a talented writer.

majid86
In terms of overall talent and success then i guess Sly takes it

majid86
But Arnie gets the award for best cheesy quotes of time

BruceSkywalker
two has beens.. sly in a few movies

ChocolateCake
If I had to choose between the two I would plump for Sly.

Mr. Rhythmic
Gotta go with my main man Sly. "Rocky", "Rocky 2", "Rocky 4", and "Rocky Balboa" are some of my favorite movies ever.

The Nuul
Sly is better over all.

dadudemon
Sly is definitely a much better actor and is more talented, overall.

Also, Sly stayed in WAAAAY better shape than Arnie did, which earns my respect a million times over, over Arnie.

I mean, HOLY SHIT! That guys is old and look at him! (That's a very recent photo of Sly.)

And then, look at arnie:

Thats because he takes some human growth hormone to keep him fit forgot the name of it but its banned here in Australia.

majid86
Poor Arnie

ADarksideJedi
We should have a poll on this thread.

steverules_2
Sly looks like his skin is too tight

agreed. He really does look like he is on steroids.Pretty funny how arnold got lazy and fat. laughing I think Sly is probably the better actor overall but thats not saying much, neither were all that great. as far as has beens go,Sly would be one but Arnie has moved on to politics.

steverules_2
I have more Sly movies than Arnold and the Rocky movies are my favs so...thought T2 was great, but thats just one movie. And also gotta give some props to the Rambo movies which are just summed up in one word: BADASS! big grin

maham
hate arnold so probably sy smile

jabjabcross
The GOVERNATOR rocks! As long as it is anyone besides Mel Gibsons silly face, I am down like a clown. GOVERNATION!

Kazenji
Schwarzenegger personally

only thing i've liked from Sly is his Rambo movies and maybe his movie The Expendables i'll wait for it to come out first.

steverules_2
You didn't like Rocky?

Kazenji
nope.

steverules_2
Wow no expression

ADarksideJedi
I also want to add that I think Arnold Schwarzenegger has better lines then Sylvester Stallone does in his movies.

steverules_2
He does have some good lines yeah, but the lines written by Sly for Clubber Lang (Mr.T) are better and maybe even more well known, 'I pity the fool' came from Rocky 3.

ADarksideJedi
I have to admit both have classic lines!

majid86

I agree with that
And the best Arnie movie which has the best quotes is Predator (1987):

'If it bleeds, then we can kill it'
'Stick around!'
'RUN! GO! GET TO THE CHOPPAH!'
'You're one ugly motherf*cker!'
'So you cooked up a story & drop the 6 of us in a meat grinder'
'Dillion! You son of a B*TCH!

ADarksideJedi
He also has a cooler voice.

steverules_2
I can understand him better than Sly

majid86
yeah lol
And this is an animated fight between Arnie & Sly

The first two Terminater movies along with Rocky 1 2 & 3 are in my top 10 favorites list of all time.

roughrider
Kind of a wash. Arnold might have had the better, longer career, but Sly scaled greater heights with the first few Rocky films (which won the big Oscars and he himself got nominated), and for doing a few more serious films. He also scored more lows, and has more Razzie award nominations than any other actor in history, and is known for milking a series past the dry point.

Same, I would include Rocky 4 in there as well...it's a guilty pleasure I must admit

Absolutely Terminatorsmile)

majid86
I think Arnie's best movies are in order:

Predator
Terminator 1
Commando
Terminator 2
Conan 1
Last Action Hero

Sly's best movies in order:

Rambo 1
Rocky 3
Cobra
Rambo 3
Rocky 2
Rambo 4

ADarksideJedi
I saw that they are playing in a movie together that should be fun to watch!and abit scary to watch as well!

majid86
The Expendables is the movie with both Sly and Arnie.
In Twins, you see Arnie look at Rambo 3 poster and in Last action Hero, the poster for T2 has Sly as the T800

Sanford.
Arnold's films, I generally prefer over Stallone's. I only really liked Rocky 1 and 2. The first 2 Rambo movies are good too. I love First Blood. That's really it for Stallone. Arnold has Predator, the first two Terminator films, Conan, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop, and Eraser. He's just generally been in better films than Sly.

ADarksideJedi
Yep that is the name I forgot what it was my mind went blank!

shokosugi
one word: ROCKY

ADarksideJedi
another word Rocky four!

Conan, Total Recall, Kindergarten Cop and Eraser ARE NOT "BETTER" Films.

I thought it was quite funny but Twins was cool also.

roughrider
So Stallone blames the first Batman in 1989 for the decline of the movie star action genre he was big in? Saying that they got away with fake muscles in a superhero suit over the real thing?

I think he should blame himself for making too many terrible films in a row where he does the same thing over and over, tiring the patience of the audience. And he screwed up his own comic book film - Judge Dredd.
Plus, he resorted to HGH for 'fake' muscles, to do the last Rambo film.

TheReelBiz
On acting chops alone: Sly

In general: Arnie

He may not be the machine he once was, but in his prime he would rip sly in half. He also has more quotable lines in his career, which should count for something.

majid86
Arnie was originally supposed to play Judge Dread but didn't want to be wearing a helmet during the entire movie so the plot was changed and Sly got the role.

majid86
Yes Rocky is a better movie but i was talking about Sly's ACTION movies compared to Arnie's action movies.
Apart from Rambo 1-4, what other good action movies has Sly made?
I think Arnie's role in Terminator 2 really was the highest point in his careers much bigger box office draw than Sly but i still like Sly better as an actor than Arnie.

Good thing that theres a new Dredd movie coming and no Sly in sight

as for Rocky being the best movie more like its overated....

Sly even regrets taking off the helmet in the 1995 Judge Dread movie.

I love Arnies & Slys movies .

Conan 1 2 Terminator 1 2 3 End of days jingle all the way

last action hero

Tango & Cash Lock up Demolition Man Rocky 1 to 4

The Rocky films are iconic and no movie director should ever attempt to remake them infact it should be against the law

but for me Schwarzenegger wins it by a press up

uniqueweasel
For me it's Arnie, just because of the rewatch value in his movies, the only Sly movies I rewatch over are the rocky's, and thats mainly 3 and 4!!

roughrider

I think he wanted to do the movie more straight. It was that hack director Danny Cannon who couldn't get the tone right, and the producers who felt they weren't paying Sly a ton of money to keep his face covered. Short sighted. Plus, it was the wrong story for the first Judge Dredd film; that plot would have worked better for a sequel.

ADarksideJedi
Every time I got target shooting I can't get that line taht Arnold says out of my mind "I am the party pooper!)

The Nuul
Why is some one comparing Drama to Action flms?

facepalm

Rocky rapes anything Arnie has ever done.... Including T2.

Drama wise, Sly stomps Arnie's.

Arnie is better at comedies.

Action are about equal but Sly is the better actor while Arnie sounds like a robot.

majid86
Robot?
Well he did play a cyborg in 2 of his best movies.

Just imagine Sly as the T800, i dont think he could have pulled it off

Lord Shadow Z
I've always seen Schwarzenegger as the better of the two, he just has a better screen presence than Stallone and handles action better.

Stallone had a good spell with a large quantity of action movies, but you couldn't really tell the difference between the characters. Still good movies but he never really rocked the boat a bit, e.g. played a villain for example whereas Arnie went straight for it in The Terminator.

Plus, variety is an issue, Most of Stallone's work is mainly comprised of action and drama with his two iconic characters Rocky and Rambo, as much as I like them there is no need for endless repetition. He has done brief comedy with Stop! or my Mom Will Shoot but that didn't lead to any more. He's done a couple of Sci-Fi roles but never branched into any Fantasy movies to rival Arnie's Conan/Kalidor characters.

I just feel Arnie has the better appeal and even when people were raising their eyebrows at the likes of Junior, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All the Way he didn't baulk at making more of the same type of films, and those films have their fans as much as the action movies do.

Well Rocky would win an Oscar like that because it was a very good piece of characterisation but where it was strong with that, all the movies were rubbish with the actual depiction of boxing.

With the 3 Arnie films you mentioned well they are what they are and they don't pretend to be anything else. Sci-Fi Action movies, and 3 of the most iconic movies of the genre. If Arnie had appeared in an Aliens movie he would have the set, what would Stallone have? Demolition Man and Judge Dredd?, good films but hardly amazing.

But just back to the Rocky issue I believe that if Arnie had done a similiar type of drama he could have looked to his own life and done something based on his weightlifting career, that would have been good to see.

You miss the entire point. The action genre went from being strong and tough as a person to being able to fake it, which is now far more abundant. While garbage like "Max Payne" gets into theaters, brilliant movies such as "Undisputed 3" are forced to go direct to video.

The actual boxing was bad as much as it was exciting to watch with all the drama. The punches were clunking 'hollywood' punches and the fact is that Rocky would have been dead or would have lost every fight to stoppage.

No boxer leaves themselves criminally exposed as the characters in the movies 1-5, I haven't seen the final film so I don't know if they improved it or not.

I lke watching the Rocky films but the depictions of the boxing has always been its weakness.

I was debating the examples provided which were Terminator 1+2 and Predator e.g. Sci-Fi Action movies so mentioning Rambo doesn't fit. I was defending these movies because it was suggested they were rubbish compared to Rocky. I was merely pointing out Arnie had the better resume in this genre.

Rambo is a higly popular character and one of my favourites and having a character like this certainly puts Stallone in the ascendancy for having such an iconic character.

The only way I'd counter that is to say that with repetition of the character, after First Blood it became less about the character and more about the kill count.

Rocky is a Drama. Terminator and Predator are actions movies. Different genre.

Stallone is a better actor and creator.

But Arnie just has too much star power. More memorable films.

And whoever said that Rocky was better than T1, T2 and Predator is nuts.

I agree. I enjoyed the movies, but the boxing was all 'Hollywood'. Rocky took more shots to the face then a pornstar. He would have ended up worse than Ali is now. Eddie Murphy said it best in RAW!

I still like Sly over Arnold, and I agree that Undisputed 3 was a great film!
