Can anyone think of any sequels that are better than the original? I don't think any have been BETTER. But the following are ones that I think are just as good:

Godfather: Godfather Part II
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Alien: Aliens
Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Last Cruisade

Die Hard was the best, but 2 and 3 were pretty equal.

dawn of the dead... friday the 13th part 2. terminater 2.

Terminator 2 was tight. But I still like the first one better.

Aliens was much better than aline 1!!!

Evil dead is better than 2, just because its scarier IMO.

ESB is my fave of the OT so thats another.

Omen 2 is better than 1 and 3.

I thought blade 2 was better than blade 1, though they both were very cool.

After close evaluations...i've decided that i actually liked TPM more then aotc....and it wouldn't be cause such obcious reasons that aotc is superior.

i liked clones better then menace.

I liked Rush Hour 2 better than the first.

sequels usually aren't as good...Star Wars is strange though....the OT is too classic to be replased by the new one, but I still like the new one...and Clones was a bit better than Menace...

so did I I didnt the first time, but after the second I agree

i just saw rush hour 2 for the first time today before work. i think it was better then the first too.

I'd have to agree too, I didn't think the first was that good and when they made a sequel I thought it would be worse but was pleasantly surprised.

I liked The Fellowship of the Ring better than The Two Towers, not by much though.

i liked both the same maybe TTT jus a very little bit more

What I didn't like about TTT is it's incredibly slow pace, but the Helm's Deep war is unforgettable and will be a classic.

the only bit in TTT i liked better than FOTR was Golem.. and Seeing more of the hot HALDIR!!!!

I think Terminator is far superior to T2.............the story is hundreds of times better, the only advantage T2 has over the original is the large budget and FX technology that had been invented.


Now.......to sequels that are actually better than the original.

I think Desperado is superior to El Mariachi (havn't seen OUATIM yet)
I think Book of Shadows is better that The Blair Witch Project
I think Friday the 13th parts 3,4,7 are all better than the first
I think Empire Strikes Back is better than Star Wars
I think Rocky II is better than Rocky
I think Silence of the Lambs is far superior to Manhunter
I think Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey is better than Excellent Adventure

dawn of the dead is arguably better the night of the living dead
day of the dead is arguably better then dawn of the dead
two towers is better if not equal too fellowship

teenage mutant ninja turtles 2 is better then the first

PS. Book of shadows is garbage. has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, the first blair witch at least had a heart and had some unique qualities, book of shadows was just rushed out to capitalize on the firsts success.

once again...........I agree.......Book of Shadows sucked, I still think it's better......I could atleast stomach that movie......Blair Witch 1 made me just want to puke.

why? for a modern horror movie it was outstanding. somewhat unique, which is saying a huge amount in this day and age.

The Two Towers was better than The Fellowship of the Rings and also X-Men Two was heaps better than X-Men One. Didn't really like the Matrix Reloaded though and had thought that the Matrix was better.

as i have said many times before T2 is the best sequel ever made

and i dont think that TTT counts as a sequel to FOTR.........its merely the continuation...........remember they made the entire sage in one shot

sequels are made only after the original comes out............so TTT and ROTK dont count

exactly.... but it is a sequal.. sequels are continuations of the first..

so, technically it does count..

the remake of the night ofthe livinng dead (if it counts)

aliens is better than alien, T2 is better T1 evil dead 2 is better than evil dead 1, empire is better than a new hope, and wrath of khan is better than the motion picture and thats pretty much it for sequal winners

Blasphemy. Alien is considered one of the scariest movies ever made. That movie still freaks me out. Aliens is more action based, less story and character development. Same with Terminator.

Halloween6 , 7 and 8 are better then the original.

nightmare on elm street part, 6,7,and Freddy vs Jason is better the the original.

Hellraiser part, 3,4,6 are better the the original.

Well actually it was written as one whole book but because of it's size and paper shortages during the war it had to be split into three VOLUMES not PARTS persay.

And I think that X2 was better than the first.

you know john carpenters vampires los muertos probably took about twenty seven dollars to make. I almost wanted to pull an scene from "PI" while watching that peice of vampire movie crap

and alien may be considered one of the scariest movies of all time but it still doesnt mean that the second wasnt an all around better movie because it was. It gave the alien fans every thing they wanted and more. Im not saying the first wasnt the materpiece it was im just saying the second movie was the first and more

John Carpenders Vampires Los Muertos dosin't suck it's great, Bon Jovi is damn cool, I just love that movie

Empire Strikes Back - I count it as a sequel, and it kicked the first one's arse - Better.

X-Men 2 - The first one really sucked. This one was pretty good - Better.

The Matrix Sequels - awful - Worse.

The Schumacher Batman sequels - pure crap - Worse.

Disney Classic sequels - why, oh why? - Worse.

Hannibal - meh - Worse.

X-Men 2 sucked donkey balls (and other assorted put-downs)...

Aliens was as good as if not better than the first, same goes for Terminator 2...

Empire Strikes Back better than Anh...

Childhood favorite, I liked the cowboy stuff, and enjoyed the train sequence.

Fair enough. To be perfectly honest, if BTTF 2 hadn't been so damn "dark", I would say it's about as good as the original. But the whole Lyon Estates turning into the ghetto with drive-by's and what not..meh..

I dug BTTF 2 more than the first mainly because of the beginning future scene. It's just really good.

Definately agree with that.

Most sequels are absolute rubbish, to name a few:

Mortal Kombat 2
Batman 3 and 4
Terminator 3 (although it was reasonable)
Blade 2 and 3 (both very bad movies)

And pretty much every sequel to a comedy or an animated feature...

Disagreeing on "GS 2". Katharine Isabelle relegated to flashbacks, having Emily Perkins carry the big-budget feeling movie? Yuck. I love it, but "Ginger Snaps" was incredibly inventive, and the sequel had been done before. It didn't have the same cult feel.

Same for"Hellraiser 2" and "Hot Shots: Part Deux". The original "Hellraiser" was groundbreaking. The sequel was great, but the original just has to win by default. Dialogue was snappier, characters more interesting, and it had FRANK!

"HS: PD", same deal. Funny as hell, but the spoofs were kinda "meh", maybe because it was Rambo-related.

A good movie that has a strong concept will usually result in a better made sequel than the original but often sequels will not be as awe inspiring witha few exceptions. Oneoff type movies decrease in quality in every way in a sequel, especially horror movies and serious dramas. Action and superhero movies usually fare well in sequel making whereas comedies are very hit and miss. Franchises in general will probably only come into their own with the dawn of the realistic superhero movies since there are a wealth of stories which can be brought realistically to film form.
