Reptyl

Reptyl was born in the Coalsack, a realm of space known for its labyrinth of thick chemical clouds that provided ideal cover for pirates. He grew to be a pirate of some repute, in part due to his ferociousness, lack of mercy, and bigotry for those who were not reptilian by nature. When the Elder of the Universe known as the Contemplator sought refuge from the vengeance of the powerful cosmic being Galactus, he fled to the Coalsack and Reptyl agreed to shelter the Elder as he was also bornin the Coalsack. Galactus sent his herald, Nova, and his former herald, Silver Surfer, after the Contemplator, and the two were captured by Reptyl and rigged to power his ships with the cosmic energies they emitted. The Silver Surfer and Nova were freed thanks to the influence of the race of plant-beings known as the Cotati, who recognized the Surfer as a former ally, and Reptyl killed the Contemplator capriciously. Later, when war was immenint between the Skrull and Kree alien empires, Reptyl happened upon an attack on the Skrulls by the alien Badoon, a skirmish that was also happened upon by the enigmatic Stranger. The Stranger attempted to accost the would-be Skrull empress S'byll, but Reptyl offered his entire crew in place of her, and the Stranger agreed. Angered that one reptilian race would fight another instead of the humanoid Kree, Reptyl offered his services as a privateer in the Skrull forces. The Silver Surfer, himself an ally of the Skrulls, maintained an uneasy alliance with Reptyl, never forgiving him for trapping him in their first encounter. Retpyl served as a supplier of men and munitions as well as a tactical strategist. However, his familiarly with S'byll angered her consort, the Super-Skrull, and he and Reptyl soon came to blows. Reptyl seemingly killed the Super-Skrull in the confrontation, earning S'byll's respect and taking the Super-Skrull's position as warlord champion of the Skrulls. The Skrulls and the Kree soon came to war, and at the height of a pivotal battle, Reptyl was betrayed by the one he had chosen to be his majordomo, Clumsy Foulup. Foulup had became a secret agent of the Kree before earning his way to Reptyl's side. He stabbed Reptyl in the back and fled to a Kree ship, leaving Reptyl for dead and leading to the Skrull's defeat. Reptyl did not die, but he soon returned to piracy and embarked on mission to kill Foulup in revenge. Reptyl was instead confronted by a rejuvenated Super-Skrull, who battled Reptyl to the death, choking him. Reptyl's body was left floating in space, where it developed a cocoon. Weeks later, Reptyl emerged from the cocoon, transformed into a monstrous version of himself. Reptyl believed himself to be the beginning of a new race of reptilian beings, one of a rare being whose genes contained the key to the next step of evolution. Calling himself Reptyl Prime, he hoped to return to his home to spawn a new race of super-reptiles. He came across the Silver Surfer, and the two battled. The Silver Surfer ultimately trapped Reptyl under tons of rubble, and upon investigation, found Reptyl had escaped. Somehow, Reptyl had returned to his regular appearance and his pirate career. In this capacity, Reptyl happened to cross paths with the villain Thanos, who had since come to regard himself as a god of death. He offered Reptyl a place by his side in a pantheon of his own design, and Reptyl agreed, desiring to be a counterpart to other, mammalian gods. Reptyl was later joined by an alien called Primo, who accepted a similar offer from Thanos. Together, the two worked on behalf of Thanos, who was attempting to track down and destroy Quoi, the Celestial Messiah and a being of some cosmic significance that Thanos regarded to be antithetical to his own self-styled godhood. Thanos and his "pantheon" were opposed by Quoi, his mother, Mantis, and her allies, the hero team Avengers, and in the process discovered the cosmic Rot, a state of un-being that threatened the existence of Eternity. Thanos and the others were forced to work together to defeat the Rot Thanos and the embodiment of Death worked together to destroy the Rot, and Thanos ultimately fled, distraught over his role in creating the Rot in the first place. Reptyl and Primo were left to their own devices, and the two had come to realize that, despite their suffusion of power, they were not truly gods at all.
