Wow....Another crappy thing... sad

Alpha Centauri
It seems odd for the terrorists to use Hertfordshire as a target...so I'm not too sure it's terrorism.

I think they're treating it as an accident at the moment.

Some shocking scenes on BBC News 24 though. eek!

hemel hempstead...centre for all infidel blasphemic propaganda dont you know

i've got relatives in hemel...

crazy explosion...some reports saying that it was heard as far away as the netherlands...which is a bit hard to believe

eggmayo
I didn't hear it at all, to be honest.
Leicestershire is fairly close, if my geography is up to anything.

mechmoggy
I'm in Newbury and I never heard it either.

To be fair I was sound asleep. If the explosion would have happend on my upstairs landing, I'd have probably slept through it still. embarrasment

eggmayo
Oh.. 6am... well, yeah, I would have been asleep..
Yeah, that might account for it.

Trickster
My grandmother lives there.

The pics on BBC News 24 are astounding.

exactly what i thought...but thats what it said on bbc ceefax...

although they tried to explain it as an atmospheric phenomena to do with pressure differences at night compared with during the day...air at the ground cools down at ground level more than it does at higher altitude so when the sound from the explosion travelled upwards it hits the warmer layer and is discipated sideways and hence can be heard further

Then everyone closer than those countries would have heard it. I certainly didn't.

PVS
they are probably saying that the sound carried that far.
doesnt mean they heard a loud bang in holland. could have just
been a mild rumble, like distant thunder.

Or some people in Holland heard a bang at 6:30.
May not even have been the same thing.

My favourite quote about the blast was on radio 1 this morning, when the news reporter said the blast had, "...popped open my airing cupboard door...".

Hee hee. big grin

I'm sure there's a profound thought to be had there.

It's just the little things that amuse me.
