Alpha Centauri
I think Redman quite easily deserves his own thread.

Not only is he quite hilarious (unintentionally or not, I never know with him) but I truly believe he is an amazing lyricist.

Currently I've been listening to his solo albums a lot. They're all humourous and you can never take them seriously but I think they're all solid if they're not really good. I never really liked his Malpractice album when it got release (2001) but listening back, I think it was quite an eclectic album.

He seems to be ready to make a return soon with a new album (his first since 2001's Malpractice) and possibly a new album with Method Man, which I personally can't wait for.

So, yes...Redman thumb up.

JacopeX
I like his songs alot and some are funny and some are jus really addictin but I still like his songs. I wonder why hes mostly featurin in songs now dayz.

Alpha Centauri
He's been putting out mixtapes and such on his somewhat underground label, but his new album- Red Gone Wild- is due out this year.

I'll pick it up most definitely.

-AC

JacopeX
Same here. I have so many Favorite songs but right now the song I like most is "Lets get dirty". Really hot beatz and the lyrics are great.

Deathblow
Whut and Muddy Waters are classics, no denying that, but that MTV Cribs thing him and Meth did, the Christina Aguilera song and Blackout (I just don't like it) put me off him recently.

He's great fun though, I agree with what you said in another thread about music being more enjoyable when it's clear the artist takes pleasure in what they're doing, tis why I can't get enough of Louis Logic.

Alpha Centauri
There's a song on that album with Method Man (obviously) called Enjoy da Ride, in which Meth puts out one of the very best verses I've heard from him. Fun song.

I think Da Goodness is my favourite Redman song, or to be cliche, Whateva Man.

-AC i wont pick it up. from the rumors i heard, Eminem is producing all the songs.

"Dare Iz a Darkside" and "Whut??? The Album" = Classics

In that case I won't be picking it up either, provided this is true.

I think Muddy Waters was his last great album. I don't mind Doc's da Name 2000 or Malpractice but they're not as good.

-AC

FistOfThe North
"Dare iz a Darkside" is IMO, Redman's best album followed by "Muddy Waters" then "Doc's da name"

I could never get enough of Redman's flow and how he rips it continuously and effortlessly and with a touch of humour at times. He's was definitely the best member of the Hit Squad and Def Squad.

The 1st time I heard Redman flip it was on that song "the Headbanger" back in like what '92, '93? Cause of his part in that song and ever since then, he's been my most favorite MC to listen to.

I still rock "Dare iz a Darkside" and flow to it like it just came out, lol

-hh-
1. Dare Iz a Darkside
2. Whut Thee Album
3. Muddy Waters

how i rank his 3 best albums^

FistOfThe North
I never really looked into it but I always wondered if Mobb Deep ever had a problem with Def Squad. It was subtle but I did pick some things up like in that "Infamous" Interlude when Prodigy was talking, saying

"And oh yea, to all them rap-ass niggas, wit 'cha half-ass rhymes talkin' about how much you get high, how much weed you smoke, and that crazy space shit that don't even make no sense, don't ever speak to me when you see me, word, make me get on some 'ol high school s***, start punchin' niggas in they faces for livin', for real."

I remember lookin at my boy with a kinda shocked looked and him nodded sayin something like "Yup, he's bringin' it to them Def Squad niggas wit that space shit." Or maybe the beef was just with Keith Murray cause he thought he was hard as s***, boy lol

And "Dare iz a Darkside" (DIAD) came out in early '94 and "Infamous" came out afterwards that year and DIAD's theme was hell and "space" with songs like "Cosmic Slop" and "Da Journee" And lines like "I'm like an eclipse on the Friday the 13th, with Black cats and Haily's comet, blazin' blunts in my driveway." and "I travel the Milky Ways and the stars of the Gods, then return 6 billion feet beneath to get cigars."

And most of Redman songs, forget that albums heavily involve talkin' about weed or mad weed usage, and he talks about it more than the average MC, lol.

i don't know. And I forget what album and track name it was, but there was a jam where I heard Prodigy sayin' something like "I'll reach out to any Squad dat's Def" He was obviously talkin about Red and them, I dunno i just always wondered if they had beef?

Anyone know ?

Alpha Centauri
Redman doesn't do beef, man. He'd rather spend his time on doing nothing but rhyming and smoking weed it seems.

Same as Meth. Despite the fact that in a battle they could both probably skin 90% plus of MCs if they tried.

louis logic is probably one of my favourite mc's, i havent been listening to him long enough to see if he'll stand the test of time for me, but ive definitely been listening to all his albums over and over again. i love a rapper that doesnt give a ****, hes so consistently dope and funny at the same time. i cant get enough of him either.

oh def

redman = top 10 rapper DOA

fist, imo, muddy waters is his best album.

AC you agree with me that em got redman as his blueprint... flow-wise and subject matter?

The best part is when Red comes back in and messes up but somehow turns it into a great verse.

Meth always looks like he's battling the microphone, just easy for him.

I think it'd be an interesting collabo album, Em and Red.

It'll be like Jim Carrey doin' a movie with Robin Williams. Straight ill and mad comedic. I'll probably pick it up.

Nah, even if he did mention them, it obviously never got to that level. P just used to hate on any MC that didn't spit straight up street anyway, he had his own ideas of what hip-hop should and shouldn't be. Ha, I'd really love to see the kinda reaction Prodigy circa '95 would give if he could see what he'd become by 2005.

Yeah he's the type that can bind totally crazy lines to a really tight structure, like that part in the opening verse of Diablos, that whole ''leave your unfortunate seeds in an orphanage'' part, just rolls straight off the tongue in terms of flow, but every single word is relevant which is something so many other MCs can't achieve. Lyrically, I don't think his shit will age, but I get the feeling a lot of the production will get outdated quite fast, some of it might even sound cheesy.

Eminem has alot of potential, he's just not using it wisely. i think he's given up. he does all this for the $$$$$$

Afro Cheese
Yeah he fell off/sold out, that doesn't disqualify him from being one of the greats. Ice Cube did the same thing.

Afro Cheese
But the thing is, that applies to a high percentage of the great hip hop acts. Mobb Deep, Snoop and Dre, Ice Cube, Q-Tip, Public Enemy, and others have all shown huge decline in quality. They'll still go down in hip hop history as the greats. Because no matter how hard their fall is, what people are going to remember is how good these artists were in their prime.

-hh-
we'll yea, like Nas said in one of his interviews, you expect for him to release another Illmatic, but it's just not gonna happen.

You can decline, and every mc does decline eventually, but he went from great to garbage. i can understand going from great to good to decent, but he literally changed. just my opinion.

Afro Cheese
No I see what you're saying..

That's understandable but what I was referring too was his prime.

The future does not equal the past and vise versa. The Slim Shady LP and the Marshall Mathers LP were in my opinion, his best albums. To me, his decline came after those 2 albums, but just because he was great, but then went straight to garbage doesn't mean he can't be considered as one of the greatest MC's in hip-hop ever, if he was nice in the past. No matter how low he sinks now, he still ripped it back then, in those 2 albums.

i meant em cant rap now, hes showed his potential already. he just fell off.

i wouldnt consider him one of the greatest mc's ever, he wasnt that good. infinite, which is i think his best song to date, was from his first album. his next album as a whole was better after that, but there wasnt a song that beat infinite lyrically.

Alpha Centauri
The Slim Shady LP was absolutely incredible.

I personally believe his following album was poor, with only a couple of good tracks. It showed that he was regretting how much he pissed off parents because it was he who needed those parents to give their kids money to buy his albums.

Now he sings songs like Mockingbird.

One famous line: "Should I dye my hair pink and care what y'all think? Lip-sync and buy a bigger size of earrings?"

Ironically he has now become a lip-syncing wannabe fashion mogul.

He's commercialised those who previously associated with Dre also, including Dre himself. Xzibit gained a legion of Shady wannabes as his fans when Eminem started appearing with him, as did Dre.

Unless your name is Gary Grice happy

GZA's spent the last fourteen years improving. I'm absolutely certain he'll retire before he declines.

Alpha Centauri
Declining in ability isn't necessarily bad if you just naturally lose it, just unfortunate.

Declining because you want to meet the appeal and expectations of Carson Daly and MTV means that yes, you suck.
