The Prometheon from Superman: The Animated Series

Info-When an asteroid gets too close to Earth for comfort, Superman joins a team of astronauts to blast it out of orbit. However, while setting charges for the team, Superman makes a startling discovery on the dark side of the asteroid: a gigantic humanoid creature is bound to the rock of the asteroid with massive metal bands. Despite the objections of the military leader of the mission, both Superman and the director of STAR Labs try and find a way to save the creature for further study. When Superman places the asteroid into a more stable orbit above the Earth, he inadvertently exposes the creature to sunlight, and it awakens with a fury, tearing off several of its metal bands.

The military officer hits the switch for the explosives that were placed on the asteroid--however, the monster not only survives the blasts, but with the destruction of the asteroid, it is now free. The creature falls to Earth, where they discover that it was a robot created by an alien race to do large-scale manual labor. It feeds on energy--from the sun, as well as from the guns and bombs that the military throw at it. After asking the military to hold their fire, Superman battles the creature to a standstill, but with its immense size, he just barely makes a scratch. As the monstrous creature grows ever more powerful, it heads for an even greater source of energy to feed on: Metropolis. "The Prometheon" fondly recalls the glory days of the 1940s Fleischer Brothers' Superman cartoons, when he would battle an epic threat to Metropolis. With the creature first attacking a submarine underwater before creating more havoc on land, this episode also recalls the Godzilla movies. It's as if the writers asked themselves what would happen if Superman had to deal with a Godzilla-like menace. As corny as that may sound, the story is somber, and intelligently handled. Yet what is most impressive about this episode is how Superman ultimately defeats this menace: not through sheer force of brawn, but simply through outthinking the lumbering creature.
