Dead Rising (Zombies Galore!)

WrathfulDwarf
The basic premise of this game is simple.... killing zombies. Yes, it sounds like a rip off of Resident Evil. But looking at the screenshots and the videos. The game has totally drawn my attention.

There are lots of things you can use as a weapon. Like guns, shovels, and I think even a loaf of bread. Anyone else seen it? It has the atmosphere of a zombie flick. Which I really like. Hopefully it delivers.

Lana
A loaf of bread?! Okay, I'll have to check that game out for that very reason....laughing

WrathfulDwarf
Here is a screenshot. stick out tongue

What console(s) is it for?

SaTsuJiN
xbox 360.. you can find videos for it here : http://gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=1781

Wow... I'm really not into zombie games but this looks really interesting. Theres a couple hundred zombies in that one video eek!

Ast
I remember a shot of fighting zombies in a supermarket, this game looks awesome. stick out tongue

BackFire
Yeah, been fallowing this game for sometime. Looks neat.

WrathfulDwarf
I knew it would interest you BF. Doesn't the game looks like something someone would do in zombie movie? you know, like a simulated Dawn of the Dead experience? big grin

WrathfulDwarf
Hey everyone! The game is coming soon! Check out the latest XBM for exclusive screen shots of the game. There is a feauttere on killing zombies and I think you'll like it. Gotta get this game..I'm having high hopes for this one.

H. S. 6
You have a time limit.

That sucks.

Smasandian
It's not really a clone of RE.

Your an journalist and the main objectives is too take pictures of the zombies and you get more points for action shots like an head exploding and stuff of that nature.

Also, its more open nature than any other zombie game.

That's what I got from the article for gamespot.

But its definitly not like RE.

no it wont cause there different story lines to it depending on how many pictures you get, people you save, what people you save, and if you let them live or die

One country has already banned this game:

anyone know anything about Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddlers Green??

C-Dic
It's a weak game..? I've been considering getting a 350 JUST for "Dead Rising" after seeing the HD trailer for it. It's more "Dawn of the Dead" than anything.

BackFire
Don't buy a 360 just yet, it's very possible that this game sucks.

It could easily be one of those games that's fun to play for an hour and then gets boring, if there isn't anything deeper than just killing zombies over and over aimlessly, which may be the case.

I really hope it's good, been waiting for it for a long time, just kinda keeping my hopes down.

Wait for some reviews.

For those with Xbox Live, the demo is out now for download. Downloading now, will report back shortly with a brief overview and my opinion of the demo.

But do tell us about the demo BF! happy

actually it is designed for different ways through the story, there are multiple people you can choose to save or not save hidden in the mall, and you can investigate the mystery of where the zombies came from, get pictures, or just sit in one spot until the helicopter comes no expression

BackFire
Demo was sweet, can't really do much besides just kill random zombies and take pictures, but the game seems like a lot of fun.

WrathfulDwarf
I read elsewhere that downloading the demo was taking a lot of time. Did yours went smoothly?

Smasandian
It's taking me some time.

But its over an gig, so its going to be awhile.

BackFire
It took me about 20 minutes I think. I did it late last night when it first came out, so there weren't too many people downloading it with me.

Smasandian
It's taken me forever.

But sometimes I hate XBOX Marketplace, I was at 68% per cent, and then I got disconnected, then I went to dl again, it was at like 5%. It's sooo aggrevating, consdering it was around 2 hours since I started dling.

Smasandian
It looks promising.

I'm just hoping the game has enough depth to warrent an purchase, but overall, it looks pretty good.

Smasandian
First review is up for the game.

http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=717020

Not bad at all.

WrathfulDwarf
So is this game basically GTA: Dawn of the Dead?

Smasandian
Somewhat....but from what the review said, that the developers make you play chapters over and over to find out what's happening, which is a cheap way to increase playtime, but overall, it was a very good game.

H. S. 6
I was not impressed at all with the demo. erm

Smasandian
Why?

H. S. 6

BackFire
Hence why it's a demo, you seemed to expect the full game for free or something. The full game will have missions and objectives.

Controls are perfectly fine, had no problem with them at all.

Did you hold X down for longer, because the animation changes a bit.
But that's the case for most games, the animations for attacks are the same. What's good about it is that each weapon (I think over an hundreds items) each have the seperate animation. That's pretty damn good.

I agree with Backfire, I didnt find any problems with the controls. I kept on using the RT button, but thats because most games, thats the attack button.

did you notice the case files at the start of the game? Or I think three cutscenes when you changed areas that kinda of show something of an mission.

But you could be right, I'll have to wait and see before purchasing, but I think the style, humor and originality will win me over.

H. S. 6

Obviously I didn't expect a full game; I'm not stupid. roll eyes (sarcastic)

What I didn't expect was to run through the mall, and not have anything to do. Besides kill zombie... after zombie... after zombie.

I did hold down the X. I believe I was using a pickaxe; I would hold down X, go into the animation of beheading the zombie, turn around, and do the same exact thing again.

That isn't very fun. erm

WrathfulDwarf
I read the actual game you have to solve a certain mystery about the characters you rescue. Which may increase the challenge level in the game. Or you can just whack zombies left to right. I'm nearly convince the game is worth it. At least for me.

Really, oh, that didnt happen for me....I got the whole side swiping action where you decapitate thier legs.

I think it's worth a buy. It's nice to see a developing firm make something original.

H. S. 6
It's definitely original.

Does anybody know if it's coming out at standard price ($60) or will it be lower?

Smasandian
59.99 at EB.

Which means in Canada, its roughly 69.99. Ah crap

H. S. 6
Damn... I was hoping it'd be $50, at the most.

Smasandian
No such luck I guess. I would think this game would definitly warrent an rental.

H. S. 6
It's certainly good for a rental; I'm just hoping it has a bit more depth than what the demo showed. erm

Smasandian
I think they're will be.

The main gripes with the game is basically the save system. Some reviwerers criticized the case system, but not for depth.

Tptmanno1
Hmm, I've been thinking about buying a 360 for a while... this game looks good though, but not a reason to buy it.

Smasandian
Well that's great to hear.

WrathfulDwarf
Okay, I made up my mind. I'm buying this game whether it sucks or not. Then I going to load my Xbox360 music with the soundtracks of the following films:

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Zombie 2
Cannibal Holocaust

Then I'm gonna fix me a meat sandwich and play this games till I completely pass out of exhaustion or if finish it first. Have fun everyone.

Awesome!!!!

All reviews have been very positive, it's getting like 8.5 and such in most cases.

Game comes out tomorrow, I have my day planned.

SpikeSpiegel
Yeah, tomorrow for some. I have to wait another month sad

Until then, I have to make do with the demo

BackFire
Got the game today, really a lot of fun, I'm loving it.

Smasandian
I love the intro game.
I didnt get alot into to it, but its seems pretty cool...I really like the whole photojournalist edge.

Smasandian
Save system if ****ing aggrevating though...thats my only complaint, I died twice after doing this shit, and then I saved and quit, and now I gotta to play the game over again.

Ummm after you talk to the photographer, how can you get into Il Fresco's part of the shopping mall?

PVS
played the demo for about 10 minutes, was completely bored, then deleted it.

Smasandian
I dont know abou this game anymore.

It's fun, but to me, its soo frustrating. One escort mission, I'm trying to escort two Japenese man and its during the night, well, I cant go through the mall because its filled with zombies, cant go outside, because I get shot by the convicts, and I can go through the tunnels because they're too many zombies.....its just soo frustrating.

And you can't save anywhere (like in the middle of the mission)?

All of the above, but change ten minutes to about 4.

Such a pile of crap.

Smasandian

Nope. What I dont like is that you cant save numerous times, and if you get stuck, you have to play the whole game again, but granted, with all your stats build up.

I atleast found the maintenence tunnel key, but its pretty much useless with every zombie crowding around. I just hope if I have to restart the game, I can keep the key...which is highly unlikely.

Kill the zombies?

What level are you? A horde of zombies shouldn't really pose much of a problem unless your guy is weak or something.

The save system is admittedly bad, kinda a shame too, really it's the only severe flaw the game seems to have.

WrathfulDwarf
I'm getting my copy today. Can't wait any longer....

So...is the actual game better than the demo?

Or do people just accept bad games due to hype?

Well, thats somewhat why its frustrating. The whole redoing of things.

I just have to relize that if I let those people die, its alright because I can play it again.

To PVS and VVD, the game is pretty good. The demo was a piece of shit, but the actually game is fun to play. It's rated around 80% by most reviewers, but it's somewhat of an taste to play, some people might love it, some people might not.

BackFire

Yes, the actual game is much better than the demo. The demo is just aimlessly killing zombies, the game has a plot and characters. You're rarely just killing zombies for the hell of it, unless you want to.

WrathfulDwarf
If in doubt you can always rent.

AstroFan
I rented this game the other day, Im loving it. The save system bothered me at first, but after restarting with better stats, im doing fine. Im somewhere on the 21st, im not sure when.

What are the other 2 game modes you unlock?

Smasandian
That's my problem, I keep on thinking that I dont have enough time, not realizing that it's meant to be played over and over.

AstroFan
Yeah, I looked on the notebook, and there is like room for a shitload of survivors, and I only have like 6. laughing out loud

I saved the 4 in the theatre, only one made it back. roll eyes (sarcastic)

Smasandian
I got the two guys barricaded, then saved Sofia on the way there. I was in Paradise Park, then half way through, the cd stops spinning...I was like noooo!!!! (because of been screwed over a few times with this area)...

so I did it again, but got shot by the convicts.

So I did it again, but in Paradise Park, I got stuck up and one of the guys was very close to being dead. But I made it through...I might actually make it to the second day...considering Ive been restarting for the past weekend.

Your suppose to beat him up. At first, I ****ed him up with the sieve, but then I ****ed him up with the fence lattice, and I realized your suppose to beat him up until he starts crying.

And then, I gave him an sub machine gun and the other guy an pistol...and boom, they're all good.

The convicts are such a pain, I killed them good though. Once you kill them you can drive their jeep. And once you kill the guy using the mounted gun, you can detach said gun and use it against the other two.

Smasandian
Really...wow, I didnt think you can kill those guys.

Anyways, I finally got the hang of it, and doing a pretty good job. I saved everybody except for baby lady. I just hope that the difficulty doesnt get soo extreme that it makes you play it over again....I'm going to sooo angry if that happens.

AstroFan

How did you do it?

Cuz those guys make crossing the park at night near impossible for me, and transporting people even harder. erm

Smasandian
It's not impossible.

Sometimes they are stuck behind an tree, but usually if you come from the Paradise section and trying to get to the Food Court (which is useless once you find the bathroom passageway), stick along the wall and they wont bother you when you get to the doorway.

I even saved Sofia, which was an surpraise.

This game got alot easier once I found the SMG and the Katana.

BackFire
The Katana is the weapon I used to kill the convicts. It's tough, took me a few tries.

Basically what I did is position myself in an area with a lot of obstacles, trees or benches and the like increases the chance that when they drive at me they'll get trapped, which makes it a lot easier. Once they're trapped I run up and slash them with the katana. They die pretty quick against the katana. It's best to kill the driver first, that way they can't move around anymore. The gunner is good to kill first too, since once he's dead they're more or less defenseless. You can also use the handgun as well to shoot them at a distance.

Killing them and driving their vehicle unlocks an achievement as well.

Once they're dead it makes everything so much easier, and it makes the park a lot of fun.

JToTheP
ME WANT! stick out tongue

GIVE ME YOUR 360 AND DEAD RISING, NOW BF!

Mattomic
Only played the demo so far, which is just slaying Zombies for the hell of it, but really do you really expect more from a demo??

That being said, I really enjoyed it, the various ways of killing/ridicouling zombies are so much fun, the mall is very detailed, the graphics are awesome, and this is a great tribute game to Dawn of the Dead!!!

There's some neat weapons scattered about the park, and I just like that area, it's wide open, easy to kill zombies. Plus you can use the jeep that the convicts were using, making travel faster.

AstroFan
How do you get in the movieland annex? i have the key, but the only door i found(park) says its locked from otherside.

WrathfulDwarf
Has anyone suscesfully taken a picture of the hot looking blonde boobies?

Smasandian
Jessie? If that's the one, then yes...but I'm not a sicko, its part of an scoop with Kent to take the best erotica photo.

Astro, the passage is opened when you kill the killer clown...its an scoop mission on the first day.

AC, does that mean you like or dont like it?

you mean like scare factor wise? I dont think capcom would try to outdo their own franchise... this seemed more of a design idea than a mainstay to me

Smasandian
Now I understand what AC meant....I was like, who the hell is Res?

It's completly different than RE, and has nothing to do with outselling RE. It's an spoof of survival horror games, and its pretty damn fun too.

H. S. 6
I'm confused about the save system...

I thought when you died, you were brought back to your last save, but with the stats you had?

AstroFan
No, when you restart completely, you keep your stats.

H. S. 6
Oooooh...

So what happens if you wait and catch the copter before you finish the missions?

AstroFan
Man, the ****ing convicts come back? Thats bullshit. erm

Smasandian

The game ends.... big grin

But you can replay it with your existing stats. It's a cheap way to get more length into the game, but it's pretty fun to go back with uber stats and just obliterate zombies.

Also, also knowing every single mission and stuff and how long it takes will net you 1 of 8 endings.

So Astro, you figure how to get to the bathroom passageway? From the rollercoaster area to the security door area?

H. S. 6
Does anyone know where the Maintenance Tunnel Key is? (Is that what you guys are talking about?)

AstroFan
In the tunnel, there is a storage room with weapons and stuff, its in there.

You can get down there through the park.

H. S. 6
Alright, cool. Thanks.

AstroFan
Ok, I failed the bomb mission and restarted, then I purposely failed a mission so I could do whatever I want.

Can I play through the 72 hours and get survivors to the heli? Or will the bombs still go off even though I never got close to that part?

Smasandian
I dont know, havnt got that far yet. Taken a little break.

WrathfulDwarf
Hmm...I restarted the game with the same stats and my character nearly wiped out all the zombies that I couldn't finish in my first game. So that would be a plus, I killed up 350 so far. I rescue Sophie and got a good amount of points for the escort. I'm doing good.

I wish the target system was better. But then again Frank isn't a soldier or an expert on gun firing. Just a photographer so I can't really say is a flop of the game. It makes perfect sense.

Smasandian
The target system is somewhat annoying but you can always find that perfect cover on where your protected but you can still shoot.

The game got alot easier once I found the katana and SMG and the queen bee.

H. S. 6
How many times have you guys restarted?

I've probably started over five or six times now.

AstroFan
Twice since Thursday.

Smasandian
Umm roughly twice, maybe three.

BackFire
Two times, not because I got stuck, just because I wanted to show my friends the kick ass beginning.

WrathfulDwarf
1,000 zombies killed so far! w00t

Have any of you found the chainsaw in the builders emporium?

Smasandian
Nope, I just got two chainsaws from the clown...they're the best melee weapon there is.

You can kill an crap load of zombies in the maintence tunnel...just jump into a car, and start driving. Watch out for damage though because youll be stuck in the middle of thousands of zombies in the middle of the tunnel...so what I did was change vechicles whenever I saw one.

It was pretty shitty, and its been known that shitty demo really hurts sales.

But I dont think it will for this game, word of mouth has been pretty successful.

KingDubya
One of my friends was playing the demo... and was sniping zombies with golf balls...

Don't ask me how, I just heard it over the phone.

Smasandian
I assume it's easy.

You can actually hawk an loogie at them.

H. S. 6
Anybody have any tips for killing the clown guy with the chainsaws?

Smasandian
Ummm I just ran away whenever he threw knives at me or did any of his crazy chainsaw moves.

One key point for me was to shoot the balloons when you blew him up near his face...I think that took off alot of damage.

MightyEInherjar
I either did that, or ran up to him with a sledgehammer and knocked his ass on the ground. He then goes through his whole throwing and balloon routine, which you thwart, then repeat hit and run. A lot like most bosses...

WrathfulDwarf
A sequel is on the way! smile

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=22136

Hope to see some improvements with saving games.

Smasandian
Yeah, the saving game aspect should be considered, and the brain dead AI for the people you tried to save.....god, thats why I couldnt play more.

SaTsuJiN
-_- that 'nam dude is so annoying.. I hit him in the head with a sledge hammer, and then he juggled me to death.. way too much priority for enemy attacks in this game

The time constraint is what really bugs me though.. you get such a nice sandbox to play in and you cant even enjoy it lol

aside from this I love how detailed the game world is, and the psychopaths are awesome

Smasandian
Yeah, your right. The sandbox mode is kinda of annoying with the time constraint. It does make sense though in the scheme of things.

My question would be, in the sequel, where the game be located?

I cant be in the mall again because that would be kinda of boring.

Yeah, your right. The sandbox mode is kinda of annoying with the time constraint. It does make sense though in the scheme of things.

My question would be, in the sequel, where the game be located?

I cant be in the mall again because that would be kinda of boring.

maybe you wake up in a fallout shelter thinking a bomb dropped?.. o_O

Smasandian
Hahaha.... or the zombie's are learning how to use a gun, and your stuck in a walled city.

SaTsuJiN
or the city is filled with socially acceptable zombies

"Good day to you sir.."

"Ah, yes.. good day, good day" *eye falls out*

and you're the social outcast for being normal

Smasandian
Hahaha....maybe.

But, hopefully the dev team can do something to fix the issues with the first, and make the game still interesting to play. Dead Rising was fun to play largely on the fact that it was original, but I dont know....will the sequel be just as fun?

SaTsuJiN
they have a survey at http://www.capcom.com/deadrisingsurvey/

I basically told them the rescue victim AI sucks, some of the weapons are pointless (like dishes, cd's etc), enemy attacks get too much priority over player attacks, save points are too "resident evil" where you gotta trek back all the way to that little couch / toilet on the prairie that you had just spent 10 minutes walking away from

I mean of course the good outweighs the bad indefinately.. but the 'bad' definately leave a dent in your proverbial car door of gaming

Smasandian
Oh definitly.

Your so right about the save points. That was probably the biggest pet peeve of mine, to the point it was really frustrating.

So is this game basically GTA: Dawn of the Dead?

Yeah, that's what makes it cool.

This game is soooooooo much more than GTA+ Zombies. The cahracters are good and I liked the entire photography system. My least favorite part is when (if) you defeat Adam the clown and... well lets's just say his death sequence is pretty creepy.

Smasandian
I didnt like the save system, or the horrible NPC AI.

Both with those problems, I didnt like how you had to replay the whole game again just to advanced.

Silverstein
is this worth buying? (or just renting? or even buying a preowned?)

is there a sequel? cuz that be sick if they got rid of the bugs + put it on xbox live, a team of survivors n sh*t

BackFire
I'd say rent it first, it's a fun game but gets repetitive very fast. And, as others have pointed out, the game has some huge flaws that really hinder the experience.

Try the demo if you have Live, if not, rent it and decide.

InnerRise
Also, I've heard that this game's aiming system felt as if it was an afterthought and wasn't all that good.

I wouldnt even bother with the demo because it really doesnt showcase any problems at all because its very limited.

I would go rent because even with problems, its still a good game to play based on its originality.

It is worth buying.

There will be more games as well.

The 'save game problem' wasn't actually a problem. It was just how they decided to do it. Capcom know how to put a save mode in, if they wanted a different one.

Also, if you fight the Vietnam vet (whose name I can't remember) with a sledgehammer, you deserve to get juggled to death. It's the most clumsy weapon on the game.

Smasandian
The save issue is still a problem, even if they decided to put it in there.

Simon Belmont
I didn't mind the problems wit' saving. And the game is more of mele combat then shooting so the bad aim isn't that bad a problem. All in all I give this game a 4 out of 5.

Why is it?

I and many others had no problem with it, therefore it isn't inherently problematic.

It's the way they decided to design the save system. I thought it was good.

Same as people moan about certain elements of the old RE games, which for me made those games appealing.
