Big Barda is a fictional character, a DC Comics superheroine created by Jack Kirby, originally for The Fourth World series of titles.

She is the wife of fellow superhero Mister Miracle. The two escaped from the planet Apokolips to Earth in order to find a peaceful life together.

In a reversal of the stereotyped female character then common at that time of her creation, Barda is physically more powerful than her husband and is more than willing to use that power in battle. For instance, Barda was originally the leader of a ferocious pack of female warriors called the Female Furies. As such, she possesses the great strength and endurance befitting a warrior for Darkseid. Although she came to share her husband's values of peace and justice, fighting is still her preferred response in the face of evil.

Incidentally, Big Barda is the tallest heroine in the DC comics universe, towering over the power house Wonder Woman and other heroes, both male and female, at 7-feet tall while Wonder Woman stands in at only roughly 5'11".

Jack Kirby reportedly based Barda's physical appearance on Lainie Kazan as she appeared in an issue of Playboy.1

It was an attempt to remove the female stereotype of the female being weaker than the male in comics.

It was quite revolutionary when she first came out. Invisible Woman and Jean Grey were quite the helpless damsels during that time.

Of course, Wonder Woman's being doing it since WWII but she wasn't as musclebound or tall.

I don't know a great deal about Barda, but i've always thought she's pretty cool.

Yep that's where I'm getting it all. But I'm editing it a little for our forum. Some the feats aren't really...feat-worthy.

Yeah, there is the iffy showing of "lifting the weight of a continent" as stated by Barda herself, but I don't think Barda's had enough big appearances to really stack up on impressive feats.

all the new gods are awesome. never understood why they have such trouble sustaining books. hopefully one of these days someone will really take them somewhere . . .

Oh, and nice to get my first post here in a thread about one of my favorite DC heroines. I got my first look at Barda on Justice League Unlimited and been on her fanbase ever since.

You people need to update your images. They have long since expired from wherever they came from.
