Visual Storytelling at it's finest....

Themes, scenes, or shots repeated or mirrored throughout the saga
This is hopefully the start of what will become a great thread.
First, I checked around and found only the foreshadowing thread, but none like this one.
Second, yes I'm copying this thread from TF.N, one because I liked it so much over there, and two because here it can be condensed into a few pages rather than 90.
So what exactly is it for?
Screencaps, specifically those images or shots and sequences that show the visual themes that Lucas weaved throughout the six films.
Many are obvious (Both skywalkers losing an arm), some are not.
Some are opposites, some are the same situations.
In any event, I'll try to make this fun, and definately want others to look, comment, and participate as this type of thread I've seen on 3 different boards ends up bringing lots of great discussions.
Without further ado:

Anakin's first journey is one of innocence, one that leads to his freedom.
Anakin's second journey is one of darkness, one that leads to the end of his innocene. Note the symbolic sun setting on him.

Note that these scenes are both when Anakin and Luke are officially decided to become Jedi. Both feature Obi-wan, but the angles are reversed. Anakin is on the left side of the screen, traditionaly the villian's side, and Luke on the right, the hero's side. This is intentional, and planned by Lucas, as you'll see in many more shots to come.

Notice how the last shot in "Clones" appears to be an inverted version of a similar composition from the closing moments of "Empire"; also of note, besides the fact that the droids are present in both images, is that in "Clones" we have a shot of husband-wife, while in "Empire" we have brother-sister.

Thanks guys, I was hoping you'd get a kick out of these.
There are lots more to go, as that haXxor Lucas made sure that the PT took things from the OT and mirrored and flipped them.
Some later ones are going to be clever and un-expected, as I'll show you how Luke and Anakins story's and Leah and Padme's stories parralel and contrast, but also how Luke and padme's and Leah's and Anakin's do too.
Plus I'm saving a Mace/Han solo goodie for Mon., wonder if anybody could beat me to it?

Its nto being haxxor or unoriginal. Its making a coherent saga
queeq
Yeah, well, there is an awful lot of repetition. He repeats just about everything, it does show a bit of poverty on ideas though. Taking out only the relevant themes to be copied would have made it stronger. This just shows he does everything the same way. Too much of this and it gets lame, it just kinda shows Lucas ran out of ideas.
sithsaber408
Or perhaps it means that he weaved things into the saga more subtlely than we'd thought....

Hardly subtle... He just copies every shot OTHER directors made in the OT. It would have been subtle had he only done it with crucial Anakin-Luke parrallels. But he doubles or quadruples everything.
Most of them aren't even motifs... they are way to shallow for them to be called that. Like the harpoons-around-the-pole... Since when is that a motif? It's a copy!!! Bears no relevance at all!!!
I don't mind it that much, but don't call this visual storytelling at it's finest. the finest was invented in the OT and then copied 20 years later in three more films.

See, I don't see it that way.
Lucas indeed made masterpieces with the OT, but we are selling the PT short, I think.
He went back to tell the story of Luke's father Anakin, the story of Darth Vader, and the story of the Republic becoming the Empire.
The fact that he took the time to blend the stories, to make things either rhyme or contrast with each other, and especially if he noticed that Luke was shown on the right side of the screen, the hero's, maybe even "just because" since it was a hero's story, and took the chance to tell Anankin's on the opposite side, and in opposite or the same situations....
shows a subtlety and a genius, quite frankly.
These are subtle things, not even noticed until pointed out in some cases, while others are right in your face. (skywalkers lose arms)
They show to me that when Lucas went back to tell his PT, he took far more care in placing the images together in certain ways. Things progress visually within each film on its own, but they also progress visually into the next film. Even further, as one film may have a character or event that is subtley reversed from a similar choice or event in another one that is two or three films away.
It's poetry.
If it's accidental then it's lucky or just weird.
If it's intentional, it makes the whole saga that much better.
I have more pics coming Queeq, I'm glad you've liked these ones so far, but wait till you see what else is in the films.
You may change your mind about the PT, in some regards anyway.
(after all, no amount of poetry or pretty images replaces shit acting.)

They both happen about an hour into the film, they both show a Skywalker taken from Tatooine, they both head off hoping to end up in a place that will help things (alderaan and coruscant) and they both end up leaving tech heavy places (coruscant being the "entire planet is one big city" always reminded me of the death star anyway) that are full of curruption and evil at the end.
Plus they had a desert planet behind them, so I figured: what the hell.

So does seeing a character trait repeated a few films apart, to show it's the same character on the same journey.

Even though we know him as the villian all along, notice how his position switches from on the right (good guy) in the film where he's chancellor to on the left (bad guy) in the film where he's becomes emporer and is revealed as Sidious.
This also happens in the mirrored scenes of Anakin walking and talking with Palps in his office, that I posted on the last page:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v397/Tatooine_Fireman/palpy_office.jpg
In AOTC, anakin walks on the right side while he's trying to be a good Jedi, and in ROTS he walks on Palps left side in the film that he turns evil and becomes Darth Vader.
This is more for fun than anything, but:

I like that in ROTS he's moving away from us, and in ESB he's coming straight for us.
Kind of a metaphor for anakin's character in relation to the audience, while still showing him relentless in pursuit of our Jedi hero.

Why would I? IN the end it is all about story, not about endless repetitions in composition. I mean, he did a nice job, but he uses repetition as a style. He chooses left for the villains and stick to it... that is a basic choice. There is very little suprise in it, something that baffles you. And again: the OT was mainly shot by OTHER directors. And that is what Lucas is repeating: THEIR work.
And when it comes to the very essence: good storyTELLING, the PT is flawed and always will be. Not nice compositioning will ever be able to compensate that. Nice pictures alone don't make a good film.
sithsaber408
Well very well, the intention of the thread was never to get people to like the PT better, but to show all of the visual themes that are repeated, mirrored, or reversed throughout the whole saga.
It made me appreciate the PT a little more, but in the end it's all about the pics.
As long as everybody is still enjoying the thread, I will continue.

How much wishful thinking is this? A lot comes down to basic composition...
Oh, and you forgot the word 'repeated' when you were summing up.
sithsaber408
You've baffled me.
I think that you said composition is important in film, which I get...
but then you ask me if I'm just wishful thinking....
about what?
My last post said that I never meant to convert people to liking the PT more, only that it made me appreciate it a little more, and that I was gonna post all of the similar shots and themes of the saga in here.
And I said "repeated" in that post, since you quoted it you should see that. L

Repeated dramatic motif - the birth and destruction of an Empire is preceded by a Dark Lord at the mercy of a Jedi. In ROTS he chooses to strike and is overpowered by the evil he sought to destroy. In ROTJ he chooses to lay down his weapon and saves the galaxy entire.

I didn't cry but I was choked up and misty eyed from when Obi-wan says "You were the chosen one!" till the credits rolled.
So many things to take in.
That speech he gives, Vader's birth, Padme's death, the twins birth, the Death Star, Alderaan, and then baby luke at the homestead in front of the twin suns.
Man.
What a great flick. One of the best times that I ever had at a theatre.
Back to the pics on mon.
General G
These are really good, I never really noticed these things before.
queeq
Some are more stylistic than intended parrallels I'm sure.
Alliance
I agree, but there certainly are elements that overlap....*hands*
queeq
Hands for sure.... a great many of them. Everybody loses their hands: Anakin, Luke, Mace, Vader...
Alliance
...Yoda, Dooku....
queeq
Yoda?
Oh yeah, I knew I forgot one... Dooku. Who else?
General G
In ANH, during the cantina part, did OB1 kill that guy or slice his hand off? I don't recall, he may be another one...
Alliance
That was an arm...and it bled...so we disqualify that.
Yoda also had his hand sliced off, but Lucas decided not to include that since Yoda's facade was too important to protect.
queeq
He did??? What a terrible idea.
If we inlcude the ANH cantina, we can also include the AOTC bar one... but the are arms.
IMHO... too many hands got cut off. It's Lucas' inflation of a good concept: he uses it too much.
Alliance
I have a bad feeling about this.
Bottomless shafts in enclosed spaces.
queeq
Yeah... those too.... but they are minor, since the hands getting cut off were pretty crucial in the Luke-Vader relationship. Since everyone gets their hands cut of, it loses its meaning of destiny and choice of the path you're gonna walk.
Alliance
If you forget, Vader forced Luke down a bottomless shaft....
...that would be a significant development in a relationship with anyone that I know.
queeq
Err.... yeah, in a way.
But the cut-off hand of Vader made Luke realise how close he was to the very turning point that his father once reached, it showed him where he stood and in a way what to choose. So that scene of Luke chosing for the good side is what the whole saga is about: choice for good and bad. So, with all these hands getting chopped off, it devaluates that moment. And that is a shame.
Alliance
Yes...and then Luke fell down a shaft.
Very significant.
queeq
He did..... and so did Palpy, and Ob1, and Maul.... and OB1 again alomst fighting grievous, and Mace fell and... ooooh, these terrible endless repetitions....
Alliance
It provides cohesion. And yes, it is pointlessly repetative because Lucas cant think of how to dispose of characters.
queeq
Well, he thinks repetition is profound.... That's what worries me.
Alliance
Repetition always is a hallmark for "Place analysis here"
queeq
It works of course, but when applied properly. But he finds it poetic when everything is repeated everywhere. He overdid it.
Alliance
Its not overdone...its far from typical though. It helps to connect a saga that spans 27 years. People already feel as if they know a part of the film.
queeq
You don't need to repeate everything three times to connect something, style, music etc. should connect it up as a whole. Not repeating scenes x times...
Alliance
No, you don't need to. I'm just saying that its not necessairly wrong to.
queeq
It is when all you do is repeat yourself. I like the hands repetition thing with Luke and Anakin, because it shows a similar path they are walking.
Some parrallels are nice when they show a different outcome when a situation is handled differently. But so often it is random, just for the sake of repetition.
Alliance
As I said, it doesn't really bother me. I think its an artistic mechanism. Lucas really isn't known for his mature filmmaking.
sithsaber408
Well I'm glad that this little thread of mine is enjoyable, and that it's caused some discussions over the paralells in the saga.

Good and evil fighting in the center of the universe is shown by Yoda and Sidious fighting in the center of the senate.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/Sepharih/AOTCSenate.jpg
The first thing that can be observed is how unlike the one above, the Senate is highly populated signifying that the power still remains with the people, unlike in ROTS where the emperor has all the power and the seats are empty. I also like the way Yoda is looking at the Chancellor's seat, interesting bit of forshadowing.
BTW, I checked the dvd's and the camera pans out from the Chancellor's seat the same way in both shots.

This isn't a parallell but something that was posted at TF.N. Awesome stuff.

See it now?
This is after Anakin has tapped fully into the darkside to kill the seperatists, it is right before we cut to the shot of him on the bridge contemplating the road he's on and crying because he can't change it, and in the story it foreshadows the next major scene where he chokes Padme, fights with Obi-wan, and is injured becoming the Vader in the mask.

Well they are both pre-jedi Skywalkers wearing close to the same thing, doing the same thing, in the first movie of their trilogy.
Just kiddin', that one was more of a visual copy than a thematic parrallel.
But I hope that these are being enjoyed, I have way more to post.

Maul - Anakin... not bad.
Sith Master X
I'll give everyone my absolute honest opinion.
You see, I can understand that viusally these movies were done differently than the PT, as it relies on alot of CGI to help make the environments come to life. I'll have no problem admitting that these films were more kid-like than the the older ones. (Put aside the Ewoks, the little creatures in Jabba's Palace, The Sand People) Oh thats right. The OT had its child moements too. GL made these movies "fun". But some people take advantage of the that "fun" and analyze it too seriously. I think the only Star Wars movie that acutally took itself seriously was Empire Strikes Back.
But first we need to realize who George Lucas is. Get ride of all the dialogue, with just nothing but the movie and John Williams heartwarming score, and you'll find that Star Wars is a visual masterpiece. You could follow these films without any dialogue whatsoever, with the aid of John Williams music and George Lucas' visuals. Thats the kind of guy he is. Lack of imagination, you could call it that I guess. However, Lucas did say in the Phantom Menace documentary that everything was a "metaphor" in the sense that Episode 1 has a link to Episode 4 and so on.
Alot of people complain because the PT is way too different than the OT. I think however, this thread goes to prove just how clever Lucas actually was in tieing things togehter, and yet, using symbolism to refer back to the OT. In alot of ways, this goes to show that all the same elements from the OT are still in the PT, and that it's not all that bad. The PT is supposed to bring out that Kid inside of you. I don't see anything wrong with that.
If its a lack of story telling or creativity, well, I don't know really. I mean, Lucas could have turned the Saga into a Matrix thing you know and use a bunch of slow motion, camera rotating movements and such, but he kept the traditional shots from the OT to bring out the same elements. Yeah its the same, nothing new. But sometimes you don't have to fix what isn't broken.

Without any characterisation and with pretty pictures, it's not much of a movie, is it? Because that's what you're doing if you take out dialogue: you lose any characterisation and that is exactly what is at fault in the PT.
Besides, I've spoken to a number of DP's who admit that the pictures are beautiful and crispy sharp, but most feel it kinda misses a soul. It's a bit cold and dead... nice CGI, but little life. I agree with them.
EPIIIBITES
I agree with both...these films are without a doubt visual masterpieces...some of the most breathtaking images to ever be put on screen have to belong to the Star Wars franchise. But it's all about the soul.
Some scenes don't have as much soul as others. Seeing the Battle of Hoth in the 80s was just completely other-wordly. Wild imagination, combined with state-of-the-art effects work, to create something that made everyone's jaw drop. You know that effect you see every know again that just makes you smile from ear to ear...that was Hoth in the 80s.
On the other side of the spectrum for me is something like the lightsaber duel in the lava rivers of Mustufar...over 20 years later!!! There was something so artificial looking about it that I couldn't get into the scene and get a feel for the size and scope of what was on screen. It just had no gravity...completely souless...20 years on, you gotta think there should be no excuse.
queeq
Exactly my point. In the 70s and early 80s Lucas et al struggled with all the technical and financial limitations and despite of that (or maybe thanks to????) they made these awesome films. Now, with no financial or technical limitations they come up with these visually stunning, but almost soulless films. You know what, I prefer the limitations...

Besides the obvious links in dialogue (apprentice apologises after disagreement involving the Council, mentor says kind words about apprentice), it's also significant that this is the last conversation Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan have before facing Maul, and the last conversation Obi-Wan and Anakin have before facing each other.
For Rampant Ox:

A nice visual where Anakin and Luke are shown slipping into the darkside, but are also shown to still have the good inside.
I like how Anakin is still on the left (the villian's side) and Luke on the right (the hero's side) and the two sides of their faces that are in the light meet in the middle.
