James Horner is my favorite.

He's done SO many good movie soundtracks. Titanic is the most beautiful and haunting soundtrack I've ever heard. He also did Braveheart, Cocoon, Apollo 13, Willow, A Beautiful Mind, Deep Impact, and so many others. I'm sure more will come to mind to me in a few minutes.

To all you John Williams fans: Have you ever listened to Seven Years in Tibet? It's terrific. I reccomend this soundtrack, even though the film wasn't really good.

BackFire349
clint mansel is mine, he did requiem for a dreams music, byfar the most haunting and mind capturing soundtrack ever made.

queeq
I like John Williams (SW of course and Spielberg's films), James Horner (although he's been very repetitive the last few years), Danny Elfman (Batman Returns is his best, lately also a bit repetitive), Carter Burwell (excellent music for the Coen Brothers), James Newton Howard (the wonderful Waterworld) and Howard Shore (the minimalist that went non-minimalist for LOTR).

Actually, there are many more I like: Miklos Rozsa, Nino Rota, Elmer bernstein, Maurice Jarre (especially in the old days) etc. etc.

finti
oh I forgot one, The Lost Boys smile cool one

mechmoggy
Aaah the Doors, now thats a good film sountrack. cool

Snatch is really kewl too.

finti
actually it is Echo and The Bunnymen performing that Doors song.

bam bam bam
"People are strange when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange" - The Doors(originally)

queeq
THose are not really soundtracks though. They're just songs that are sung in the movie, but were not made FOR the movie.

finti
still counts though, would be too boring with just made for the movie stuff... IMHO

queeq
Well.... why. I mean, the other music already exists on CD.

finti
true but there are to many films coming out simultaneously, so there aint enough composers to keep it up music especially for the films. So what they do is that they let populare artists to make songs, and old goodies as well, and then the video of the song will promote the film as well as the song.

Fire
idd finti

Thomas H
opps, forgot the Boogie Nights soundtrack, that one is great!

King Jedi
"There's Only One Jimmy Grimble" and "Trainspotting" have good soundtracks.

queeq
They can get enough composers, that's not the reason. It is either the choice of the director to use that kind of music or they release it to make money. LIke the Spiderman soundtrackSSSS.... there is a real one and one with only songs. The latter is just to make money.

In the 80s and early 90s that was worse though. EVERY soundtrack had to have some kind of lame disco song or disco version of the main theme on it. I doubt it ever sold one soundtrack more though. THe songs usually sucked.

finti
Well it is a way of promoting the films, and if the song is good and artist well known the chances of the film doing good are..ehh good(again).
James Bond movies have been doing so for 40 years and still going strong.

Fire
lol

Billy The Kid
You have to mention The Rock here.
The music in the movie is brilliant from Hans Zimmer.
The music is half the experience (In porn movies too big grin)

Alphamale
Hey what about Purple Rain- by Prince!

J-ROC
Blow soundtrack is pretty sweet, and I dont remember if I mentioned Dazed N Confused. **** I love those movies. cool

Thomas H

The Rock has the best soundtrack ever!

finti
oh far from it man

Thomas H
oh..no woman

BackFire349
yeah, blow had a good soundtrack, and was an awesome movie.

Bad Boy
The Rock soundtrack is amazing- along with Armageddon, Bad Boys and Speed.

Fire
idd the rock is good, but lotr is just a tad better smile

King Jedi
I can't remember any of the music from LOTR.

Corran
Pulp Fiction has an excellent ST.

queeq
However strange it may sound.... that is actually a very good sign of good film music. That way one can test if the music is overpresent or actually supporting the story. So in that way LOTR soundtrack qualifies very well.

King Jedi
I don't think so. A good soundtrack is something that is memorable. Like Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Braveheart, E.T, Indiana Jones even Titanic.

finti
probably because you have seen those movies multiple times and then the music will stick.....in the end

King Jedi
I've seen FOTR a lot though. I have it on DVD. It doesn't have any real stand out tunes.

finti
bloddy hell forgott Warriors soundtrack as well that one is great

jayride
Top Gun anybody?

finti
didnt take my breath away

Fire
I agree nothing really special

Max Power
the soundtrack to Guy Ritchie's "Snatch" is great. Fits the movie perfectly but it's a great one to listen to on it's own.

mah
what about Psycho?
