Can I use my ordinary bluetooth headset (which i use for my mobile phone) on the ps3 to communicate with friends over gameplay?

Yes you can. First you have to register the headset with the PS3 through Settings/Accessory Settings. Once you've done that, you should be able to chat in whatever games support it. Check the manuals or on-screen to see how to use it cause certain games you have to push a button (L3 in Resistance) to talk.
