We still have two VHS players in the house, can play both British and American tapes. Haven't used them since we got the new televisions though. Tried to connect the VCR to mine and it will not record properly, it plays videos fine though.

I've got a few tapes left on my shelf, replaced all my favourites onto dvd.

Ofcourse, I mean, I did spend money on them.

Devil King
I still use VHS. There are a couple of 2nd hand stores around that sell them for ridiculously cheap. It's a good way of checking out some older movies that I've never seen. Then, if I like it enough, I'll buy it on DVD.

Selphie
I agree with Devil King.

Plus, some VHS tapes I own DO have DVDs, but have no good extra stuff, like commentaries, so why even bother getting the DVD for it?

BackFire
I've pretty much completely ditched VHS. I don't even have a VCR in my room anymore.

Selphie
I have one of those 2 in one players, with VHS and DVDs. It's very handy.

chillybanana
Still use now and again.

i have only my favorites, but not all of them. but when the dvd came out, my family didn't buy it for a while; we had so many VHS.
no that i've moved to my own apt. i just borrowed a few of my favorites : Princess Bride, Shakespeare in Love, Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Citizen Kane, His Girl FridAY, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Indy Jones The Last Crusade.

I know that seems like a lot, but trust me, it's not.

Bluesteel
Funny I came upton this thread as I was just thinking about VHS'es today.

Now the thing is my big room here is basiclly me and my friends studio when we work with movies, so therefore we need a great deal of equiptment available to us, because you never know what you might have to check out etc. So that means a VHS is a must.

Now about the movies, well this is what got me thinking about VHS'es today, I was kinda bored and I thought hell, I'l go down to the ol guest room and dig trough that closet which contains like 150 VHS'es half of them are either movies I've copied or recorded back in the day when I was like 12 or something.

So I found like 20 tapes which cought my interest, and I took them upstairs to flip trough as some did not have a name on them, and some I wanted to see. Now something starnged happend to me, I somehow fell in love with that shoddy quality, it was just like watching movies when I was a kid. I don't know why but it had something to it, some charm of some sort, the damn ol VHS, now im going to watch all those 20 movies on VHS! stick out tongue

wicker_man
I do indeed as the following haven't been released on region 2 DVD yet:

Famous Five (90s series)
Harry Enfield and Chums/Television Programme
The Scariest Places on Earth: Home Video Edition
Clive Barker's Nightbreed
Haunted
Scream Team (recorded)
Strange (recorded)

MildPossession
Can you play other regions on your dvd player?

I will never go back to the quality of VHS if there is a DVD of the same film, it's too big a difference to enjoy it, for me. No amount of childhood memories would change that.

On my old one I could, but I can still play 'em on my computer, luckily my VCR plays other regions - hence having the Scariest Places on Earth video.

Yeah. There are many titles that are really hard to find and never even got to DVD, so that's why I keep the VCR around for my collection of...adult educational films. big grin

Nightstick
Yes,

Infact I'd say more then half my collection is on VHS. So hundreds of them. As far as VCR's I have stand alone unit and two attached to TV's.

As to whether I use them. Yes at least as often as I watch DVDs.

In truth. VHS is still my prefered format in many ways. While I like DVDs for special features and the like. They will never beat VHS in playability/durability. I can find a VHS that has been buried in the back of a closet for 20 years collecting dust with boxes sitting on top of, stick in a vcr and it'll play. DVDs are hit or miss whether they'll play when you first open them.

Blinky
I still use tapes. IMHO they were the most durable technology. Shit, I still have 1980's Ninja Turtles cartoons that work like a charm. If you look at a blue-ray or DVD crossed-eyed it will shatter, shitty technology -- I think they were designed so that people have to spend more money.

AsbestosFlaygon
No

coolmovies
My family still use it its imbarasing

WickedDynamite
There is still so much vintage and classic adult films that haven't made it to dvd yet. There are torrents but I avoid those like a plague.

There was a yard sale a few blocks from my place and the guy was asking too much money for a few wcw, wwf, awa and other wrestling videos.

Sabu935
I still use one,I tape the movies I watch on demand and stuff to keep them.

DarthLazious
No I sold all of my VHS movies on E-Bay and made alot of money too.

RobbieDude
Yep. I just watched Dogma on VHS last night.

Machete_Guy
I watched Evil Dead on VHS with a few friends the other day for the first time in a long time. I have to say, watching it on video really gave me a kick. Sure the sound was dodgy and the pictures had the typical aged video look, but it really was a new and exciting experience.

After doing this i've decided to collect all the old horror films on VHS even though i'll probably be doubling up on a fair few movies. I really have to say though, its a feel i don't get from dvd, probably the nostaliga of renting horror movies out on vhs when i was a kid. I think its a great idea to collect old videos smile

K.Diddy
beer I'm gonna buy one soon actually, I go to the market a bit and find video's for like 50 cents to 1 dollar,I just want one beacuse you never know what video you might find at a garage sale or some junk shop

The Beast Master
Judge Dredd
Devil times 5
Dances with wolves
Wizards of the lost kingdom
Empire Records

All for a total of around 5 dollars

Recently transfered our latest shortmovie over to a nicely kept VHS tape somehow gave it a very special look which I am happy about.

Anyway. I was curious if anyone with a new and decent surround reciver has tried to upscale a VHS signal and output it with HDMI?

How dose that look?

chomperx9
i kept my VCR incase someone ever wants me to copy a vhs tape to dvd from my DVR.

You should try to sell the ones that are not avaliable on dvd yet before they are released on dvd. If you don't want them anymore that is.

tmiller2
I gave away my vhs tapes about 4 years ago.

Thankfully, when i started collecting dvds i realized dvds was going to be the future so got used to them pretty quickly.

I bought a VCR just before they were due to cease production.

It is a 6 Head Stereo with Front and back AV's in and out's

i brought my VHS copy of "Crash and Burn" fan expo this year, had bill moseley and charles band sign it.

both of them looked shocked to see a vhs.

my sister wants to trade me her dvd copy for my vhs copy.

I have a small stack of VHSs left, but I don't know why. We have a little TV/VHS combo in our bedroom, but we still have a $30 DVD player hooked up to it we use way more... I just can't let go entirely.

Yeah, I bought the software neccessary to transfer my VHS to my computer, then burn them to DVD. Then I'll be free of the little buggers.

Dude111
I have one also... A LINEAR MONO player and I love it...

VHS is goregous...

Picked up a sweet 4-head stereo Sony VCR for $20 bucks so I could watch old tv I had taped back in the day. I was really good about pausing for commercial breaks so these rawk!

Patient_Leech
I would still use VHS 5 or 6 years ago on occasion if needed, but now I don't even own a VCR. So no, I don't. And VHS tapes I still might own are probably buried away at my parents' house somewhere.

Robtard
Haven't used a VHS is a very long time or owned a player, probably close to 12-13 years now. I kept one VHS tape, Disney's The Little Mermaid, because it has the very limited cover with the dildo hidden in the artwork by the disgruntled artist. Might be worth some $$$ some day.

I still have around 1,500 DVDs (in folder sleeves) in storage, but haven't really watched a DVD in years though, went fully electronic with my film library a few years back and never looked back. I still have a DVD player in storage as well.

Do wonder if VHS will have a renaissance so to speak like vinyl did in the music world. Not sure though, as vinyl has something uniquely positive to it even when compared to modern audio, while VHS really doesn't when compared to modern video. eg hook up a quality record player to high end audio equipment and the sound can be amazing. Hook up a quality VHS to top of the line 4K television set, and it's still that grainy VHS look I imagine.

Rumor is the artist was going to be fired, so he had one final laugh before he left. Disney claims that it was unintentional and the spire just happens to look like a penis/dildo. They quickly altered the pic in later prints.

Dunno, still can't see VHS making a come back like vinyl records did with music.

Have to admit, I kind of want to buy a vintage top-loader VHS player. Not to play/watch cassettes, just always liked the way those looked, The very late 70's/early 80's ones.

Kurk
I still use VHS's and cassette tapes, yes.

They'll never make a comeback because unlike digital media they're prone to mechanical wear every time you playback, re-record, etc.

No. VHS was awful. Good riddance. The snapping and cracking of the sound and having to fix the tracking with the picture. It was terrible. It wasn't charming snaps and pops like you get with vinyl records. At least vinyl has awesome sound quality on good speakers.

I'll never forget when my brother and (future) sister-in-law (at the time) had The Matrix and Twister on DVD and I was blown away by the clarity. Ha... and now we have Blu-ray and 4k Bluray.

Seaquest DSV and Earth2 Imma watch this weekend...

I still have my Totoro and Little Nemo Adventure in Slumberland VHS tape. Good memories.. Too nostalgic I couldn't throw it away.

Nuke Nixon
In the box of tapes there was also Batman (1989) in minty fresh condition, I think I watched it once and then tossed it in the box, afterwards I've really only seen Batman on cable or Netflix.

Dude111
Ya I have 2 movies recorded from OVER THE AIR (I found both at salvation army)

1) Quick change - 1990 (Recorded in 1996 on a local channel in my area)

2) ET - 1982 (Recorded in 1991 on the same channel)

Rception on ET was worse.. More lines and stuff but the movie itself is better than I had ever seen it due to it being 'digitally recorded' and that one was put on the VHS tape.......

Quick Change is also goregous (It isnt 'DIGITALLY PROCESSED' as it is on the offiical VHS tape)

I do not like digital anything.... ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS ORIGINALLY ANALOGUE!
