My favorite war game is probably... Starcraft.

I like Gears of War and Resistance (but mostly Gears of War). I think Epic Games leaves Insomniac in the dust.

in that case mine'll be battlefield 1942

WrathfulDwarf
I think war games are best into two camps.

Camp one is the RPG.
Camp two is the Strategy.

I'm more of WWII fan than any other war. Modern day warfare games aren't really for me. Alien wars are quite fun too.

Menetnashté
Campaign-wise Gears of War. Online play SOCOM

I agree. War games are either RTS games or FPS games (maybe hack-n-slash like the Return of the King).

Kero_Co
Gundam: Zeonic Front

Schwarzenegger
Battlefield starwars.

ragesRemorse
Aliens vs Predator 2

FistOfThe North
Command and Conquer: Generals

FistOfThe North
Oh and "Star Wars: Empire at War".

DigiMark007
Uh. Seems like peoples' definition of War Game varies wildly. Let's recap for continuity's sake:

Panzer General - war game
Battlefield Series - shooter elements mixed with strategy, but yes.
Gears of War - probably not. Would fall into standard FPS well before wargame.
Star Wars: Jedi Academy - Lulz. No.
Any Star Wars for that matter - Lulz. No.
Any RPG - Probably not. Would depend on the title, but I can't think of a single one that would qualify.

Let's get our genres straight here people. Wargames are overwhelmingly strategy games (turn-based or real-time), and not "popcorn" strategy like Warcraft, Worms, etc.. Shooters can be considered as such, but would need strategy elemtns to play a much more prevalent role than shooter elements (i.e. Battlefield as opposed to Halo).
