lmao, you think those series are bad? "sigh" Then agian their a fair amount faster pace, perhaps you need a faster mind to work through it and lose playability if you cant sit in your turn based nonsense to choose your attacks.

2/3. WoW+Warcraft 3
4. Total war series (especillay Medieval 2+exp)
5. Ratchet and clank ToD

For me, the 10 best are the 10 i got the most enjoyment out of rather than those that are considered classics...that can be borne from different reasons...some i liked because i got hugely immersed in the games and some i liked because of the fun i had with friends...so with that in mind

QFT. The Wapanese thinking that anything originating from Japan is better than from the Wester World(it's not).

One decent game from there was FF, but even that can't compare to Diablo or Might and Magic. The rest are just FF clones.

Taven
You guys clearly don't know what you're talking about. The second biggest RPG franchise over there: the Tales franchise, differs vastly from the FF franchise in both gameplay and style. And pretty much every JRPG is somewhat unique in its own way.

Taven
And it's not anything originating from Japan, it's any RPG, and that's something that can factually be stated.

And I'll switch Diablo for Fallout. Thanks for reminding me Taven. That's more ignorant than me saying that I do not like western RPGs... I've played KoTOR (and the 2nd), Diablo 2, Morrowind, Oblivion, Jade Empire and I'm going to get Fallout 3 soon... I just didn't really like any of them.

If you think all JRPGs are the same, especially those within the final fantasy series then you are very wrong. Aside from the general saving the world thing they're all quite different.

I'm not up to task on the latest video games out there, or what's currently considered great, so I asked my son. And here's his list of what he considers to be the 10 best games ever:

Ironically out of all 30 games listed Chrono Cross is probably the one I would say is the single best game ever made, and at the very least in the top 5 among the likes of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4 and Xenosaga Episode I and III. What didn't you like about it out of curiosity? The only things I genuinely didn't like about it is the silent protagonist, the tiny degree of non linearity to the storyline it possessed, at times poor pacing and direction, and I can't say I'm too big a fan of turn based combat and the PS1 graphics are pretty dated. However its storyline and music are second only to Xenogears (and I'd be in the minority in saying that Xenogears even beats it in the latter catagory; anyone who's played it will for the most part say it has the finest video game sountrack of all time), it has the finest technical graphics the PS1 has to offer, and arguably the finest artistic design for any game, period, and its gameplay truly was the best that turn based gameplay has to offer.

Aede Madavan
I mean it was just a very beautiful and artistic game, look at the world map for example, it's probably one of the finest works of art I've ever seen, not to mention the absolutely incredibly atmospheric music playing in the background which is genuinely one of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard. It's rare to find a game that has such beauty in its variety as Chrono Cross does.

Cross is bad mostly becuase of the terrible characters. I mean, there are over 40 of them and they're all either batshit insane, batshit insanely designed, bland or have hairtearingly appalling accents. Most of them have jackshit to do with the story outside of 1 line of dialogue they might say if you have them in your party and then shut up. They barely count as characters. They're more like weapons with opposable thumbs who (very) occasionally sprout bad dialogue. Plus you can only have 3 party members in battle at once, which is crap when you have 20+ characters with you at the time. Originally they were going to have 60+ characters btw. Also the main character is bland and badly designed, the level design is hit and miss, ranging from gorgeous to bollocks, the main villian Lynx is a nonsensical protentious pillock who rambles pseudophilisophical gibberish and has an ugly hat. The storyline is pretty ****ed up too, often not bothering to give you direction or motivation for what you're doing and other times being full-stop convoluted with, as you said, bad pacing.

That said, it isn't bad per say. The music is great and some of the locations are good (and actually use more colours than black, grey and brown) and the combats alright if somewhat wierd. Its okay, but not a good game for a sequel to Trigger.

But seriously, **** Korcha.

Well, in terms of storyline Chrono Cross did kind of screw the main characters from Chrono Trigger...

All that emotional investment in Crono, Marle, Robo, Lucca.. All get shafted.

At least Frog has a happy ending.

Panzer Dragoon Saga was pretty awesome. Really good combat system, and morphing your dragons form while changing physical stats on the fly was a nice feature.

For my money, it was beat any Final Fantasy game past Six. Too bad hardly anyone got to play it, and it will never see a port because Sega lost the source code.

Juk3n
For shame on the the people leaving out early Shining Force games.
Not enough people have mentioned Golden Sun saga, too few mentioned Uncharted 2, no one on the board has probably played Broken Sword 1 or 2. Way too few sega saturn owners here too..anyone heard of Dragon Force? No? For Shame!

I tried to play Broken Sword 1, but a silly bug means I can't go forward anymore. Plus it was pretty shite anyway.

Dragon Force was good. For my money, Guardian Heroes is up there with great beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage. And it's not simply a Final Fight clone either, it plays differently..

And if we're talking Saturn games, you can't forget Shining Force III, the best of the series.

The characters do seem to be a pretty big point of critisicm when it comes to Cross, but the way I see it is that the core set of characters, particularly when you place them into your party at the right times (because I'm cool I used a walkthrough tailored to guiding you when exactly to bring certain characters with you for the best story scenarios), are all detailed relatively decently; this numbers around a dozen and includes the likes of Kid, Glenn, Nikki, Harle, Karsh, Viper, Fargo, Riddel, Radius, Leena, Guile, Grobyc, Leah, Luccia, and Serge (who is developed more subtlely through how characters interact with him and the role he takes in the story; Cross does this far more effectively with Serge than Trigger did with Crono), which is far more than the average RPG. It seems people like to focus on the number of characters that weren't well detailed in Cross rather than the number of characters that were. Not developing such a large cast of characters is as big a point of critisism for Chrono Cross as it is for any game; that the number of characters were included in your party in Cross without being properly detailed simply means that they added little to Cross, not that they took anything away from it. As it stands the level of character detail was far greater in Cross than it was in Trigger (as well as the vast majority of RPGs), where with the possible exception of Frog and Magus every character in Cross that I listed were far more wholly detailed. The focus was on Serge, Kid, and Lynx, and the plot and setting anyway, any real problems with the rest of your party members is of little concern seeing as how minimal the significance they had on the entire product was in the first place.

Excellent points. And, yes, that music is great. I loved it.

I'll put my list up.

No particular order:

Starcraft2
Super Metroid (may be my most favored game)
Goldeneye
Fable
Fable 2
Mario Kart double Dash.
Mech Warrior 3 (with expansion...dudes, don't deny this! Customizing your mechs and unlocking new shit was one of the funnest things I've ever done.)
Perfect Dark
Legend of Zelda: OoT
Tetris and many of its interations. (I played Tretris 2 for the SNES probably more than any other. It was like a combination of Dr. Mario and Tertris and had multiplayer...really hard to top that Tertris game. Tertris for the gamecube was awesome, too (don't remember it's name...but it was the one before tetris sphere. It introduced cascading which I had been preaching that tetris should have for about a decade.))

Honorable mention: Eternal Darkness. One of the best stories and game elements to date. Very unique experience at times and hard to top this games's originality.

Demonic Phoenix
- In no particular order:

Super Mario Bros.
Mega Man 2 & 3
Mega Man X1-3
Contra
Ice Climbers
Sonic the Hedgehog (2, 3 & Knuckles)
Yes, I like Retro Games uhuh

"Newer" games:
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest VII
God of War trilogy
Ratchet & Clank 2 & 3

Jak & Daxter: Precursor Legacy
Tekken 3

cdtm
No mention of Star Ocean: The Second Story? Kind of surprised, I thought that was much better then the games coming out at the time, including FF VIII..

Only Panzer Dragoon Saga was better. (Seriously, you have no idea how good it was.. Get it anyway you could.)

What are we basing the ten best games on? Ten most influential, best selling or our ten best gaming experiences? It's really hard for me to answer this question because most of the games i thought were once good would be a painstaking chore to go back and play today. I recently hooked my NES up and had a game night where my friends and i played nothing but NES games. I had exactly 357 NES titles and we must have played at least 200 games that night and pretty much all of them were garbage. However, back in the day they were the bee's knees. I really can't get over how bad they were. They were so bad that i took my entire collection to, The EXchange the next day. I'm going to do the same with my other old games and consoles. Other than a few gems most games have aged horribly with all the new innovations.

I don't know, I can still enjoy the SNES. The N64 and PlayStation as well, I agree somewhat with the NES, and of course most games (kinda like today) were kinda bad anyways. I quite enjoy 90s computer games, too.

Most of the games I think are shit now, I pretty much thought were shit then..

But Batman, Double Dragon, Blaster Master, Punch Out, and Ninja Gaiden are fun in any era.

I probably wouldn't want to revisit Final Fantasy though. We had fun, but I'm too spoiled by modern rpg's...

MooCowofJustice
I'll just list my favorites in the order I can think of them in. My favorites are the ones I've had the most fun with.

1. Pokemon (can't pick a gen)
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
3. Super Mario World
4. Tomba!2: The Evil Swine Return
5. inFamous
6. Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
7. Spyro the Dragon
8. Super Smash Bros.: Brawl
9. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2
10. Kingdom Hearts

Honorable Mentions: Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Megaman X series, Megaman Battle Network series, Sly Cooper series, Crash Bandicoot series, pretty much any other Mario and Zelda game, Donkey Kong Country series, Metroid, Kirby: Superstar, Dynasty Warriors, and Twisted Metals 3 and 4.

Yeah, had a lot of fun with a lot of games.

I based my top 10 list on single player experience only(because I love so many games I have to make even more separate categories) and based it on what games actually affected my life or made me think differently about things. As much as I love the pokemon games the narrative and gameplay have not in any way affected my life or altered my outlook on it even slightly.

Great works of art will have that effect.

With lists, establishing criteria is probably 95% of it. Because given varying criteria, I could make probably 5 different lists each with entirely unique games.

So we have:
- Best for their era.
- Best period, applying modern sensibilities to classic games. Classic games can be and are still excellent, but it's simply false to say they wouldn't suffer from such a criteria.
- Most influential and/or pioneering.
- Personal enjoyment.

...there may be other valid categories.

And I'd actually contend that a list of 10 is far too small for any but the last category. Any of the others would likely need 50-100 to begin to do them justice. So I will give it some thought and post a list, but it will be solely my list, not intended as a commentary on gaming in general.

Mister Retsim
Agreed, there are too many great games to narrow it down to just ten.

"- Best period, applying modern sensibilities to classic games. Classic games can and are still excellent, but it's simply false to say they wouldn't suffer from such a criteria."

"- Personal enjoyment."

Mine will be a mixture of these two criteria, as I'll try to judge every game by today's standards but I'll also factor in the personal enjoyment I felt as I was playing the game. I'll also be listing them as series unless there is only a single game.

1. System Shock/Bioshock
2. Deus Ex
3. Metal Gear
4. Silent Hill
5. Assassin's Creed
6. Half Life/Counter-Strike/Day of Defeat
7. Portal
8. Prince of Persia
9. Splinter Cell
10. Thief
11. Wolfenstein
12. Doom
13. GoldenEye 007/Perfect Dark
14. Hitman
15. Max Payne
16. Quake/Team Fortress
17. Unreal Tournament/Alien Swarm
18. Crysis
19. Killzone
20. Left 4 Dead

3-18 could change but 1 and 2 are pretty much locked in place. Loved those games.

Sappho
not in order, and just my personal favorites. I cant help but think there are other big name games out there that i havent tried that could have easily made my list have i played them.

God of war 3
god of war 2
Zelda, OoT
Ratchet and clank going commando
halo 2
devil may cry 3
mortal kombat 4
ratchet and clank up your arsenal
super smash bros. melee
god of war

these were just the games i remember having a TON of fun while i played them.

Heh, you do know who Sappho was right?

Ok, so taking the "personal enjoyment" criteria outlined here:

...because hybrid criteria would be messy and arbitrary, here's my list:

1. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (PC)
2. THQ Wrestling Series (N64 / GC)
3. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (N64)
4. Goldeneye (N64)
5. Dark Sun Series (PC)
6. Thief Series (PC)
7. NHL '94 (Genesis)
8. Lords of the Realm II (PC)
9. Tecmo Bowl / Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
10. The Elder Scrolls Series (Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion) (PC)
HM. Shining Force II (Genesis)

I include series, because I usually find it hard to separate a game from its series when they are closely intertwined.

A few more recent games would likely contend for the list, such as WoW, the Assassin's Creed series, and the Mass Effect and Half-Life games. But I have not had time to accurately place them.

2. Deus Ex

I actually stopped playing this about 1/3 of the way through back in the day. Never understood the hype. It was like a less polished version of Thief, set in the future, and with a chessy X-Files plot tacked onto it.

I know what ODST is.

I'm just wondering what a mediocre overpriced game that was intended to be a DLC is doing on a Top 10 list.

Demonic Phoenix
ODST should not even be in a top 1000 list.

Ridley_Prime
Indeed.

Nephthys
Here ya go Neb:

On Chrono Cross:

If the writers had spaced the infodumping out more or added more concrete plotting the story would greatly improve. If, say, Serge met up with demi-humans sooner (witnessing some actual abuse aside from two scenes) and Kid's "brilliant" break-in came after a few more plot events, the player would likely grow more attached to the female lead and empathic to the fantasy racism. As it stands now, you'd never know what the demi-humans are whining about and Kid was just some strange Australian girl who drags you around for some reason. Since nobody bothers to tell you the importance of what's happening until near the very end of the game, Serge and, by extension, the players have no reason to care about plot until Lynx pulls that body-swapping stunt. You are literally just jumping around, doing the random tasks the game orders you to, until the end. You don't get any feeling of accomplishment because it's impossible to say if there's anything to accomplish.

Getting into the issues of the setting: it makes no narrative or thematic sense. Robots, knights, pixies, pirates, time ghosts, and mushroom men are all smooshed together to from a world so random that it's impossible to tell if things are normal or if this is the fault of the Big Bad Evil Thing you're supposed to fight. Chrono Trigger, while far from normal, actually had the enemies and characters fit the setting of the time period you visit (you fight magical stuff in Medieval times, robots and mutants in the future, and dinosaurs in the past). Here you get have no idea if anything is "normal" for the area, making the setting unnecessarily cluttered and preventing the player from believing this is supposed to be a functioning world.

I've already made my issues with the party members clear before, so I'll just say that at least thirty of them should have stayed home in favor of a number that are actually relevant to the plot or main character. An officially sanctioned Silent Protagonist needs more interesting people to speak for him/her. Without that, the game is reduced to just throwing exposition at you and beating you over the head with a theme that seems tacked-on and self-contradictory.

Closing this rant, I say the Chrono Cross was a bold game that introduced a lot of interesting ideas. It just had no idea what to do with any of these ideas and came out a very beautiful mess.

By some dude on Something Awful.

Majora's Mask
Reasons why
This was my first game for my n64. Didn't have as many temples as the others but since it was my first I didn't notice it until later. The game was really diverse and deep overall.

OoT

Reason why.
One of my earliest Zelda games aswell. The feeling at the time was awesome. Really felt like a Grand adventure. Dont know if this or Majora is my favorite Zelda.

Team Fortress 2
Really funny game, and very fun multiplayer. Probably my favorite multiplayer shooter.

Half Life 2.
Reasons why.
The story was really enjoyable and the level variety and atmosphere was great. First Played on 360.

Pokemon Silver
Was one of my favorite games in my youth. Spent so much time on it.

SSBB
Easily my favorite fighting game ever.

Fallout 3.
There is so much to do and so many places to explore this game is perfect to me. Little glitchy and all but I still love it.

Sonic 2.

Reason why
It was my first game ever. Personally I think it's the best of the four classic sonic games.

My overall favorite series

God Of War. All 3 of them

Reasons why
I just cannot help feeling like the biggest badass of all time while playing it. The games do a really good job of immersing me. Apart from that I like the gameplay being challenging enough while not overly complicated, the setting is cool, the main character makes the overall feel and atmosphere really believable and has really cool music and art direction.

Honorable mentions go to Ninja Gaiden and LittleBIGPlanet. LBP2 may replace sonic 2.

DarkC
1.) StarCraft
2.) WoW
3.) Super Mario 64
4.) Halo: CE
5.) Super Mario Galaxy
6.) Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
7.) Super Smash Brothers Melee
8.) Resident Evil 4
9.) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
10.) Scribblenauts

All the Halo games are garbage. Sub-par graphics, boring derivative story, cookie cutter game play. It's for frat boy douche bags who need something to play in between COD and Madden and preteen boys who want to live vicariously by projecting themselves on the character void that is Master Chief. Halo is the equivalent of a Michael Bay movie.

RE: Blaxican
Halo's graphics have always been good for their time, so I dunno what you mean by that. As for storyline, it's story isn't any worse than most other games' stories. I'd agree that the Halo franchise isn't that good, but it's still better than at least the majority of the crap out there. Better than any of Nintendo or Sony's FPS exclusives, for sure.

The graphics were good on the original X-Box for the time, but nothing on 360 has been up to par, I mean Reach doesn't hold a candle to the original Gears and it's more than three years apart... and Gears 2 is on a completely different level.

Killzone 2 and Resistance 1-2 are better than any of the Halos on the 360.

I'd agree that the animations are more fluid than Gears but the textures are blah.

Killzone 2 and Resistance 1 (I hated 2), were better than any of the Halos on the 360 in virtually everyway, but not as good as Gears... but Gears is a third person shooter, so maybe it should be compared to Uncharted.

I don't know about that, Gears uses the Unreal Engine 3, and it is a pretty open and dynamic engine. I think Halo on the Unreal Engine would pretty much be Unreal Tournament 3 with a single player campaign...
